drove from kodachrome to escalante, stopping at the visitor center
the ranger guy thought we would be okay on spencer flat road, maybe not on hole-in-the-rock road given recent rainfall
we decided to hit lower calf creek falls first
set out before it got busy
nice to have the sandy trail packed down a bit
only two gals there when we reached the falls
lots of people on our way back out
on to the upper calf creek falls trailhead
this hike is a much different experience: shorter, steeper, almost entirely on slickrock
we checked out the falls from the top and the bottom and headed back up
we kind of wanted to do one of the escalante river hikes, but ended up on one of my favorites, cosmic ashtray aka the volcano
a mile of sandy two track, then off trail on slickrock around some rock formations and up to the ashtray
very unique geological feature
retraced our steps and checked into cabins at escalante outfitters
pizza and a few games of uno made for a nice evening
so much to do in this area
next time, hole-in-the-rock road hikes, weather permitting

Day 3 of 5 in Utah

After checking out of our place in Kodachrome SP, we headed to Escalante. Once again, due to weather, closures, and surprise openings, we adjusted our itinerary.

Lower Calf Creek Falls
6.44m / 800' AEG

This is a beautiful hike through a deep riparian canyon. The cottonwoods were just starting to change. It’s a relatively easy family hike, and the waterfalls at the terminus are quite impressive.
[ youtube video ]
We only passed a few hikers on the way in, so make sure to get there early to avoid the crowds. We passed a couple hundred people on the way out, and both the lot and overflow lots were full.

Upper Calf Creek Falls
2.53m / 744' AEG

This one gets less traffic than the lower falls. There is no signage on SR12 for this hike, but there were a few cars at the trailhead when we started. This hike is entirely different from the lower falls, as it drops steeply over mostly smooth rock to a less impressive upper falls. Still very nice, though. The hike out will give your lungs a workout!

Cosmic Ashtray
8.43m / 976' AEG

What is a Cosmic Ashtray? The hike starts out on an old two-track trail, then moves to a cairned route on slickrock, traversing mounds. There are cairns off and on to give you an idea of where to go, but it helps to have a GPS track to find the ultimate destination.
[ youtube video ]
The surrounding landscape was beautiful, but the real payoff was the ashtray—fine red sand in a white bowl, with a white mound in the middle. We returned generally the same way we came.

Started at 0705. There were 12 cars in the parking lot. The trail is mostly flat, with a few short ascents / descents, and nice views of the creek as well as the canyon walls along the way. The trail is almost all sand, ranging from 0.5 inch to 5 inches deep. We saw one deer that watched us from about 15 feet away. The pool created by the beaver dam was picturesque. The falls were bigger and more impressive than expected. There were 4 people at the falls when we arrived. We walked around and enjoyed the peaceful vibes. I jumped into the water, but it was bone-chilling and knocked the wind out of me, so I quickly jumped back out. After 15-20 minutes we headed back to the car. As we headed back, we counted over 75 people heading toward the falls. :o Clearly we had gotten there and gotten away at exactly the right time.

Wanted to hit this one on the way into Escalante after seeing it while driving through 5-6 years ago. Parking lot was almost half full, which I'm not sure is heavy or light for the place. Only had a couple hours of daylight left, so I was jogging most of it. Surprisingly, there were some intrepid campers using the campground when it was probably getting down to 15 overnight.

The grade is pretty gentle most of the way, so I was able to run a lot of it without too much suffering. Passed probably a dozen people on the way up, and there were maybe a half dozen at the falls, which were picturesque.

The trip back to the trailhead was even faster, and I managed to run almost all of it. Pretty enjoyable trail, and definitely worth a visit if in the Escalante area.

Next up was touristextravaganza hike of the year. Somehow this one doesn't require reservations and permits yet, but we tried to time it right in hopes it wouldn't be too insane. The canyon along the hike upstream is pretty impressive and has some cool colors. We passed more than a few groups on their way back, and spooked 3 deer foraging along the creek. An impressive beaver dam complex created a number of pools in a flatter stretch of the valley.

At the falls there were a couple of others for a bit but as we enjoyed a snack everybody left and we had the place to ourselves which was a pleasant experience. I can only imagine how awful this area might be on a busy day. I do think that our afternoon timing made the lighting nice, which was an extra bonus. But at this early time of year, the lack of sun also made the otherwise inviting swim a non-starter.

My son's choice to pick the hike today, and he opted for one of his favorites. We got started around 0730 and only saw two people on the way up to the falls. Cool and shaded most of the way up. Made a short side trip to get a better look at the granaries on the west side of the trail. Had the falls all to ourselves, so we stayed for about a half hour. The water was very cold, but refreshing. As expected, sunny and warm on the hike back out, and we saw tons of people.

After hiking Coyote Gulch the day before, my Utah companions headed home. But, wanting to make a worthwhile weekend even worthwhil-er, I stayed another night and decided to hit up Lower and Upper Calf Creek Falls before making the long drive back to Phoenix.

I was hoping to get a camping spot at the campground by Wide Hollow Reservoir just outside of Escalante, but it was full. I was ready to just do another night of at-large camping just off Hole-in-the-Rock road (I noted several others doing this on our drive back out from Coyote Gulch), but passing back through town, I found Escalante Cabins & RV Park, which offered campsites for $29, and I went that route instead. Turned out to be a good choice, they had nice hot showers in a private-use restroom right across from my campsite. After spending two days on the trail, the shower felt great. And the campsite was great and very functional.

I got up early the next morning, hoping to secure some solitude on the trail, as I know that this is also a popular hike in the area--with easy access and a trail that is relatively low on the difficulty scale.

At the register, I noted a couple had signed in before me. As it turned out, they passed me on their return, so I had the falls to myself and didn't see anyone else on my hike in.

At the TH, there is a nice brochure that links up with numbers posts along the trail, pointing out various sights along the way. Among the more interesting are some giant pictographs on the opposing canyon wall, some granaries, a description of how the "desert varnish" forms on the canyon walls, beaver ponds, etc.

I arrived at the falls in solitude, and they were spectacular. The pool beneath the falls is perfect for a swim and the surrounding "beach" with shade trees makes this a perfect spot for enjoying a solid afternoon.

But, with a 9+ hour drive back to Phoenix on the agenda, plus another hike to the Upper Falls, I skipped the swim. (Also, it was still early and a it would have been a chilly swim).

As I began my hike back, I came across 3 wild turkeys out for their morning stroll and munch. Cool.

Other than that, the return hike was uneventful, other than passing a good number of people making their way to the falls.

There's a good reason this is a popular spot. Well worth a visit.

At the TH, I jumped in the car and headed off to Upper Calf Creek Falls, the TH for which is a few more miles up the road.

FYI: The Lower Calf Creek TH requires $5 per car.

We got started a little later than intended for this one as one in our party wasn’t feeling well. Thankfully, she bounced back and we all got to go! Woohoo! We arrived around 9 or 9:30 and were probably the last 2 vehicles that would fit in the lot. You either pay $5 or use your America the beautiful pass for this one.

The hike in was ROUGH for me given the temps (approx 100 at start), hiking in sand & very exposed. I got overheated halfway to the falls but was able to dip in the creek and cooled down immediately. We pressed on and soon after arrived at the falls.

It was busy, but it didn’t feel overwhelming at all. The falls are loud and there are several areas along the beach where your group can have its own space. The water was SO cold but super refreshing. We took pics and enjoyed snacks before hiking out.

We took advantage of cloud pockets for the way out and it didn’t feel AS bad! Alas we were all happy to be finished & back in the AC! I don’t love touristy destinations but I’m glad I got to see these falls!

#20 of 50 hikes. The Lower Calf Creek Falls is in the Grand Staircase Escalante area in southern Utah and is near Boulder, Utah. Many amazing State Parks and national monuments are in the magnificent area! The sights were amazing and the camera can't do it justice. I traveled with two co-workers, David and Jon. This is one of three days of hiking. We camped at the Lower Calf Creek Falls campground and did a day hike to the Falls in the afternoon. It was hot and the Falls was refreshing with its cold mist.

Midmorning start at Lower Calf Creek falls. The parking lot and overflow were packed, as expected. Luckily, we were able to take a spot for 4WD only cars, one of the last remaining spots. We paid our $5 for day use parking, put the ticket stub on the dash, and started our hike (along with a hundred other people). It was pretty hot out, mid eighties, but cooler than Phoenix, so there is that!

The trail is well used, wide and easy to follow. Calf creek is always on your right on the way to the falls, and is usually in site. The canyon walls have many colors, and are reminiscent of oak creek canyon. After hiking further in, there is a lot of vegetation and big trees (boxelders). 3 miles later, you can hear the falls and it comes into view. Very beautiful! Considering the number of people on the trail, coming and going, there wasn't as many people at the falls as I thought. There is a beautiful pool of crystal clear greenish water at the base of the falls, but it is arctic temperature, so there wasn't much swimming going on!! A few brave folks went in the for a quick dip and then swiftly receded to dry on the sunny bank.

We stayed an hour or so and then headed back. An uneventful hike out. My youngest did almost the entire hike out in bare feet. A majority of the trail is sandy which can make for slow going. The trail only gets rockier closer to the trailhead.

There are sign posts along the way which correspond to a free interpretive guide which you can get at the visitor center or at the trail register. The coolest marker was #8 which showcased pictographs of three trapezoidal people on the wall across the canyon. Very cool! :)

Last hike of our Utah road trip. Had plans to do Wheeler Peak in Nevada, but the prospect of 60+ MPH winds on the summit dissuaded us. Gave up camping after my air mattress died after providing 15 years of service. Found a small, clean hotel in Escalante UT and camped out there instead. Bonus points for being directly across the street from the only full service bar in the county. Turned our trip from a peak bagging expedition to a boozy tourist trip, after getting shut out of all of our plans this is all I could muster.

For those that haven't been in the area, it deserves much more exploration than the 24 hours I gave it. Next time I'll head up here with my Subaru to go check out the slot canyon hikes that abound in the vicinity.

The hike is pretty easy to follow and my guess is that the Instagram crowd ruins this place in a few years. Standard out and back along a trail that is almost 100% sand, like hiking on a beach. The falls themselves were stunning and took a quick dip into the frigid waters. If I'm ever back in the area, it's worth a second trip.

Even though this is a popular one, it’s a great destination. We got started at 0830, before the crowds. Cool heading up, spent some time swimming at the falls, then headed back down. The water was cold enough to make you catch your breath for a second, but it felt good. Hot on the way back down, as expected. Not nearly as busy as the last couple of times I was here, and those visits were also on weekdays.

Once again, we started early to beat the heat and crowds. Nice and cool to start, and we had shade most of the way to the falls. The kids enjoyed the easy walk, and were ecstatic to see the falls. There were only a few other people there, and the kids were able to play in the cold water pretty much by themselves. Once the crowds started arriving, we packed up and left. It was a steady stream of people heading up to the falls and we were glad to be going the opposite direction. It was a much warmer walk back out, and there were some complaints about the heat, but we got back to the car without mutiny, and then drove up to Boulder for a pretty good lunch at Hell's Backbone Grill.

this hike was recommended by @azwanderingbear, @azbeaver and @lindaagm
it sounded good and was right on the way to capitol reef
a little chilly so we didn't get going until around 1000
once the sun moved into the canyon, temps were fine
the trail is a mix of sand and bedrock, mostly sand of varying depths
nice geology on both sides of the canyon
always good to hike along flowing water
just a few people out and we were first to the falls, having it to ourselves for a few minutes
quite an impressive first sight rounding a bend
126 feet tall, dropping into a nice swimming hole
one guy took a dip - @johnlp might have, too
spent about 20 minutes having a snack, taking photos and chilling
left when more people started showing up, and crossed paths with quite a few on the return
the destination is great, and the journey wasn't bad
a nice hike between higher elevation gain days and a very pretty area
enjoyed the drive on scenic highway 12 on the way to torrey
