After my big hike I only gave myself 1 rest day. I really needed 2 days, and should have either come home to roast, or better yet gone to Utah for some R&R at Cedar Breaks, to come back to hike again, rested. Oh, well, live and learn. I planned on McFarland Peak, which is a solid interesting 10,700' summit. My legs were not having it, and by the time I made the Bonanza crest, uphill was painful. No way was I going to enjoy a 1000' gully scramble. I'm a little surprised I was as sore as I ended up being, as it wasn't a huge hike, but I think the steep slope had a lot to do with it. I'm not normally that sore after Kimball.

So, just past Divide Peak, I turned back and headed to the summit of Divide. It was enjoyable. Nice views of the Spring Mountain big boys.

Most of this is the lower Bristlecone Trail, and part of the Bonanza Trail. Those are nice, but fairly busy hikes. The bristlecone on the Bonanza is not as nice as the ones on the North Loop, but this area is probably drier, and more exposed, as well as lower. The Bristlecone trail is really mixed conifer, but there are some huge ponderosa pines.

I descended early and enjoyed diner at a picnic area in pinion pine, before a brief nap and a return drive to the valley oven where it was 117 today. Part of me wanted to go to Cedar Breaks, but the persistent Arizona Smoke was also in Utah, so maybe later this summer or more likely next year.

66 degrees sure beats 102 in Las Vegas. This is a very pleasant hike, my favorite on Mt. Charleston thus far. I got an early start but by the time I was heading out, there were plenty of people (and lots of pups) heading in. It probably started raining shortly after I left- bummer I missed it! The recent fire destroyed a few areas on the drive in via Kyle Canyon Rd. I wanted to venture the rest of the way up Kyle Canyon Rd (after the turn off to Lee Canyon) to see what else was burned, but I was low on gas. Nice excuse to go back, perhaps next weekend! :D

What a relief to escape the oppressive heat in town!
I hiked from the upper trailhead through to the lower. Then, I decided I didn't want to walk up the road to complete the loop, so I went back along the trail.
Many of the edemic perennials were flowering, although it was too windy to see any of the rare butterflies that live in the Spring Mtns. Saw some Palmer's chipmunks and plenty of birds, of course, but all the larger wildlife was scared away by all the dogs.

Normally, I avoid the Spring Mountains on a summer weekend because it seems everyone in town is there, trying to escape. There were a lot of people, but it wasn't a line of hikers, so not bad. 3 groups did stop me to ask where the trail went, how long, etc. - in spite of the clearly-posted maps and information at both trailheads. :?

Next exploration - the Bonanza Trail, which maybe doesn't get as much heavy use?
