Christmas Eve hike with the family while visiting in Utah. My brief research suggested that the falls were 2 miles and 1800 ft AEG in. That, along with snow on the ground discouraged me from taking the grandkids along. So, my daughter and I set out.

It had rained the day before (and snowed in the mountains), so I expected potentially muddy conditions, but it was fine. A little slushy, and slippery in the steeper sections—especially without my Yaktrax (which I had brought on the trip, but managed to leave behind at my daughter’s house).

Very few people on the trail, as expected on Christmas Eve. Otherwise, this is a very popular hike which is right on the edge of the neighborhood.

After a mile, we arrived at a nice set of falls, with a parallel set of falls frozen solid on the wall of a side drainage. It looked generally similar to the photos I had looked at online, but I was not expecting to come across it so soon.

Turns out, that was the big attraction. And I realized that my grandsons could make it up this far just fine. Meanwhile, my son-in-law had also figured out that we were going on what would be doable hike for the boys, so he piled in the car and they drove up to join us.

My daughter and I decided to continue exploring up the canyon and meet them on the way back down. The trail got snow we were and less traveled as we ascended, and we decided to stop and build snowman had a trail junction, which turned out to be a turnaround point.

We then descended, and timed it perfectly to meet our grandsons and my son-in-law at the waterfall again. We had a great time enjoying the descent together, with my grandsons doing a lot of “skiing“ on the slushy snow as we held their hands on each side.

It was a very nice morning, and we managed to beat the weather which came in with rain later on in the afternoon.
