Nebo was the other peak (besides Timpanogos) we really wanted to hit up on our trip to the wasatch mountains. we kept a nervous eye on the forecast and planned an early start hoping for the best. in the dark we drove out to the trail through intermittent sprinkles. we tried to ignore the lightning flashes. as we got off I-15 we pulled over and check out the satellite. seemed there was a small storm over the nebo wilderness and a second one a bit south. looked pretty clear after that. we drove out to the trailhead and let it lighten up a bit. we thought about leaving then decided to wait a few minutes as it seemed to be getting darker...sure enough that second storm came in fast. we chilled in the car for about 30 minutes and it seemed to move on by...
so we went up, up, up into the nebo wonderland. first through the wet maples and oaks, getting drenched along the way but becoming ever pleased with the blue skies and drop dead scenery. as we hit andrew's ridge the wind picked up and it started getting a lot cooler. the scenery was killer though and the serious ascending kept us plenty warm. once we hit the spur to the summit ridge the trail really opened up and the hike became phenomenal from a viewpoint perspective. it really picks up in steepness to the summit ridge and we were sucking wind once we finally hit it, but looking over at mighty nebo was inspiring. it was clearly windy..and getting downright cold. we put on some more gear and took off trucking up the summit ridge. almost immediately we became aware of quickly growing black clouds coming in from the south. we reconvened and watched as they quickly blew by and it soon became evident that storm clouds were passing through. since we saw no rain or lightning and they were moving through very quickly (very windy now) we kept grinding out the last 1.8 miles to the summit of south nebo.
absolutely incredible views awaited us on top. freezing gale force winds immediately forced every bit of clothing to be put on and it was still pretty cold. we enjoyed what we could from the summit before retreating back to the saddle. the weather stabilized on the way down and i was able to slowly remove all the extra stuff. by the end it was glorious outside.
we finished off a perfect day by driving through the nebo wilderness. it was about 25 miles of endless mountains and hills covered in literally millions of gold aspen. i have never seen anything like it...truly, truly spectacular.
