Day 2

Broke camp and hit the road around sunrise, making a stop at the Sierra Nevada Overlook for some alpenglow goodness. Once the road turns to dirt, a sign states the speed limit is 25. Perhaps I'm too careful with my daily driver but I barely went over 15mph for 90% of the drive so I started about 20 minutes behind schedule. I'm happy to report the new struts and sway bar links I installed a few days prior survived the trek. Kudos to the driver of the Prius at the trailhead.

The scenery on this one is top notch, I couldn't stop snapping pictures. White Mountain Peak comes into view around the 2.6mi mark - it looks so close but rest assured, it isn't.
With that said, it's a 15 mile road walk with tons of ankle busters, especially near the peak. The route robs you of 200ft of gain in the beginning and another 250ft just before the peak, making the return a bit of a slog.

The summit is airy on all sides with a stone hut which is closed to the public. The drop-off to the west into Owens Valley is massive (nearly 10k ft) and obviously the Sierras are right there in your face. One thing that caught my eye is Crescent Dunes Solar Energy Project to the northeast in NV - looks like a giant, shining beacon in the distance.

Return trip was uneventful, as was the drive out. I opted to skip Patriarch Grove (regretfully) but I felt beat and hungry. There's always something that gets left out which gives me an excuse to return in the future.

Spent the better part of the day at the Patriarch Grove of Bristlecone Pines in the White Mts. Skipped White Mt Peak, and frankly, after getting a look at it and with the road condition, I likely won't ever hike it. Maybe I will, too, eventually. Who knows?

The Patriarch Grove is great! A nice relaxing way to enjoy the range. I used a route on the site, and added some as I also walked up to the road and explored some of the dead tree areas.

A note about camping: unless you really want to camp up super high, the free Grand View CG is probably the best spot to do so. Otherwise, there were also a few pull-out view points on the main road facing the Owens Valley, but they can be windy as they are exposed.

This hike has been on my radar screen, and after hiking Telescope Peak in Death Valley I figured that I'd stay in the area for a couple of additional days and hike this one and Glass Mountain.

The road to the TH was well graded -- I not would want to drive a sedan but an SUV with decent clearance and tires should be OK.

I enjoyed this hike -- it was on a forest road and the tread was mostly good, plus the grade was fairly modest for the most part. There were a couple of patches of snow near the top, but you could easily get around them by walking a couple of feet off the trail.

It was a good hike for wildlife. We saw a couple of mule deer on the drive in, and there were lots of marmots on the hike. On the way back we saw about 15 bighorn sheep who were not camera shy.

It was a bit windy on the hike which brought in some dust, which lessened the visability from the prior couple of days while we were in CA.

I thought that this was an enjoyable hike, and I would recommend it for anyone who is in the area.

After acclimatizing on Boundary Peak the day before we headed for White Mtn at 14,242. The drive to the trailhead is through the Ancient Bristlecone Forest about 22 miles with 10 on dirt but very cool scenery along the way. The trailhead is at about 11,800 so relatively high elevation start. The hike is also one of the easiest 14er's being an old road the entire 7.5 miles to the summit. Regardless it's still at elevation and the snow made it a bit more challenging.

On the hike we passed the Barcroft Research Station about 2 miles in. After that there is another 3 miles of relatively flat hiking which took us up to the steepest elevation and switchbacks. Definitely took longer to do the last 2.5 miles to the summit than the rest of the mileage. The winds also kept getting stronger throughout the day and by the time we reached the summit winds were probably 40 or 50 miles per hour and temp of about 40 degrees while it was 115 in Phx..amazing extremes! With the intense winds on the summit we didn't stay long but there was a weather station structure on top that provided somewhat of a wind break. There were 3 others on the summit and we saw about fifteen people on the trail along the way and several marmots :)

The trailhead is at about 11,800 feet and the marmots are running all over the place, so instead of making sure I had everything in my backpack, I was busy taking pictures of marmots. The hike is listed as one of the easiest 14er's, a good beginner hike to see if we want to start doing more.

About a half a mile in, I realized I had forgotten my tunes. Karl is my knight, so he told me to keep going and he would go back to the car and get them! I passed the Barcroft Research Station at 2 miles in, and got some more marmot pictures. I was surprised by the amount of people heading down. I didn't know if they had started crazy early or if they didn't go all the way. Karl was being social and he found out that people were starting a couple of hours before sunrise!

There is three miles of relatively flat hiking which took us up to the steepest elevation and switchbacks. I was stopped by a guy who told me I was only the second female hiker he had seen all day. He was glad to see me out representin'. Then it was the two and a half miles to the top. In some spots we cut the switchbacks and plowed through the snow, it other spots we walked along the edge between snow and trail. We ended up in the middle of a group of three. Then we all followed Karl's lead to the top. Then the real gusts of wind started. The five of us left the summit together. We looked around and all of the other hikers were gone! It was 3:30 in the afternoon and everyone but us was already done. On the hike down, we only ran into one other hiker out so "late."

It was weird to hike in a puffy coat and not even break a sweat in the middle of June!
