Weather forecast today was full of lies. Mostly sunny = wrong. It was mostly cloudy. It was colder and white stuff fell from the sky.

I'm thinking of getting the band back together. After our hit Prickers in your face went global, some band members got big heads. The Bushwackers are making a comeback :y: .

The plan was East today but after about an hourish, I decided West was the ticket. An earlier start was needed along with someone to lead who likes to carry loppers.
I saw some rock piles and petros. Also a big dead scaredy. I saw some of the same stuff from the last trip 3 years ago and saw some new stuff.

I have been wanting to hike to West Cedar (elevation of 5,489 feet and prominence of 1,769 feet) for a while and I figured that I'd get up there while the temperatures were still relatively cool.

The crux of this one is the drive to the trailhead. I drove in past Seven Springs on FR 24. The road wasn't all that bad except that they were doing some sort of work on a portion of the road, and on that portion there was a berm about 3 feet high at the edge of the road, and the road was only wide enough for one vehicle. I am sure glad that I did not meet another vehicle on that stretch because somebody would have had to back up a long ways. On the way home, instead of going back that way I went north on FR 24 for about 4-5 miles and took FR 269 for 27 miles to I-17. This was a terrible road -- much worse than going from Dugas Road to Pine Mountain. This was my first and last trip on that road.

The hike was straightforward and wasn't too difficult: hike one mile on a road and then go off-trail on a ridgeline for about a mile up to the summit. I gained about 500 feet in elevation on the road and about 1,300 feet on the ridgeline. It got a little steeper at the end -- I gained around 500 feet in elevation in the last 1/3 mile.

I thought that there would be a lot of catclaw to push through, and while there was a good bit of it, it was easy to bypass almost all of the catclaw. I was dressed defensively, and at times it was easier to go through a bit of catclaw than it was to weave around it. While the catclaw was a non-issue, there was lots of lave rock to hike through which slowed me down quite a bit.

I returned the way that I came up.

Synopsis
This relatively short hike was decent, but it is a long drive to get there. There were some nice views at the summit, but the flora and geology on the hike are underwhelming (unless you are a big fan of catclaw and lava rock!)

The year was 1998. Haz was just a toddler and it would be 12 more years until I would meet my friend from across the pond. @mazatzal was know as Laztazam and is still Laz in my phone.

Richard did this hike in 1998 and I envisioned the places he took smoke breaks :) . Today's hike was fun and Richard is the only triplog. No route or pics though from him. Last night, I drew up a quick route and sent it to RS. The hike started on a road and then went to another "road". The 2nd road ended at the tank and then I headed up trying to avoid catclaw. The route up wasn't too bad except in a few spots. The views today were pretty awesome. Snow in a few shaddy spots. The view of the snowy rim and 4 peaks were nice. I made 2 discoveries on the trip down. The UCLA plastic bottle I found was pretty well made. I also have pretty definitive evidence that Native Americans invented hopscotch. The only downfall was the long drive out there.

Four days ago, I drove up a very dusty Seven Springs Road/FR 24, to go up a mountain, for the views and a benchmark. I washed the car the next day.
Washing the car wasn’t too smart, as I just went up the same dusty roads to climb up West Cedar Mountain.

West Cedar Mountain is just north of the Fifty One Ranch and just east of FR 24. Most maps do not show the road I used to get a bit closer to W Cedar Mtn, (off of FR24), even though it has a forest service road number.

I chose to hike straight up the ridge that goes directly to the high point. The mountain has many ‘up’ ridges to other, lesser peaks and also a ridgeline connecting all the peaks. I ran into a load of continuous catclaw on the way up to the high point. My thought was, once done with the high point and benchmark, I would have easy sailing on the ridgeline going north, that connects all those lesser peaks. Not so …….
The entire north ridgeline was full of catclaw and partially burned out trees and brush from a fire in 2005. This made for very slow going, as I was playing ‘dodge-ball’ with the sticky stuff. My hiking shirt got shredded and is now history. I recommend long pants for sure, and covered arms. My hat actually saved me a couple times also.

I finally got tired of getting beat up by vegetation, so I dropped down to a road that was built to facilitate the power lines and towers that run along the west side of the mountain. On the road, back to the trailhead, all of a sudden I could hike at more than 1/2 mph.

The summit log is full of alot of known ‘peak-baggers’, and quite a few hikers from Tucson.

Even though the views (in person) were great, the almost continuous overcast made for murky photos. A new camera (and lessons) may be in order also. If I ever do this hike again, I’ll make sure it’s a sunny day.
Oh, and I’m now off to wash the car again.

Went up to the saddle south of West Cedar to try to find a route over to East Cedar but got in some steep terrain and headed back to just go up West Cedar.
