When I found out there was going to be an organized run up Navajo Mountain, I was in. Then it was just a matter of figuring out the logistics.

There were two options, a 24 mile solo or relay, which is what my buddy Brian and I teamed up to do. My leg would be the 8.2-mile ascent, from the chapter house to the summit. Yes, it was tough. Really tough. The elevation, distance and steep grades were all factors, though the loose rock footing may have been the biggest obstacle. Let's just say I would rather run a marathon than do those 8 miles again.

It was an incredible experience and always a pleasure running with the Navajos! Thank you so much for having us and to all the volunteers that helped out with the first annual Moccasin Run.

Pretty good hike, I'm almost surprised I waited so long to hike it, but it took a long time to get there. Lousy overcast weather until I summited and turned back. Sunny for the hike down. Saw a kid in a truck leaving right after I started in, and a truck from Colorado shortly after, but no one else the entire time. I liked hiking this more than I expected, mostly due to the pine forest. It was still cloudy on the horizon, so I never had great distance views. I think if you are willing to do the Navajo NM hikes and Black Mesa, you ought to consider this one, too. Camp on the road and in and make a trip out of it.
