Decided to get a hike in while in LV for a conference and Dead and Co, so we headed for cooler weather. The road to the Trail Canyon and Mary Jane THs was closed, so had to add an extra mile-ish RT. Looks like a major flood went through there, although the road was fine to Trail Canyon. MJ falls TH was pretty wrecked, although the bathroom managed to survive the ground getting 2-3 feet higher. The trail itself is mostly wiped out up to the bottom of the switchbacks, and in some areas there's a gully up to 10 feet deep.

The nice thing about all this is that there were very few people up there, and we had the falls to ourselves. And if you park where we did, you can make your MJ falls hike come out to exactly 4.20 miles! Maybe should've hiked to Big Falls, which was roaring.

The guidebook that I have claimed that this hike was easy, so I convinced my mother to come with me. It was not easy. That being said, it was very beautiful- some water still trickling down the rock walls and VERY friendly squirrels. Luckily, it was pretty quiet when we went; I've seen some insane pictures of crowding on this trail.

Didn’t want to start early, but needed to be done early. The kids like the falls, and they aren’t too far away, with much cooler temps, so this fit the bill. First half mile is easy, follows an old road, then the trail veers off to the right and becomes steeper. Lots of switchbacks. Unfortunately, people cut the switchbacks and hardly stay on trail, leading to plenty of erosion, and some difficulty staying on the actual trail. If you pay attention, and stay on the switchbacks, this hike is much easier. Lots of graffiti on the rocks. The kids played under the water for a few minutes, had a snack, then sat in the small cave for a few minutes. Lots of people hiking up as we were headed down.

As long as he has lived in Las Vegas, my husband had never hiked this trail before. It was supposed to be windy and a bit chilly, so seemed like a good day to avoid the usual hordes.

Sadly, this trail has really taken a beating from the constant pressure of hikers cluelessly short-cutting the switchbacks. The netting the Forest Service had installed at one point to help slow erosion has mostly been torn up by people sliding down between levels. The trail was originally well built, though, so it can still be followed with no route finding needed. But enjoyment of the hike is definitely diminished by the shear amount of damage everywhere.

Because they are fed by springs, the falls were flowing, although not nearly as much as they do in spring. All the columbine and mimulus were dormant for the year, making everything look a little brown and glum. We had a quick lunch at the falls, then headed down to answer several rounds of "are we almost there?"

I just moved to Henderson, NV last week for graduate school and decided to check out the surrounding area. We had to get out of the heat so we went up to Mt. Charleston, about an hour away. It must be a very popular trail for locals because it was PACKED with people. There were a lot of children and dogs on the trail. The trail itself starts as a bunch of switchbacks. It's about 1.5 miles there (3 miles roundtrip), so a pretty quick hike. It's not a difficult trail (rated a 1 out of 5 on some websites I've seen) but it starts at about 7000 ft elevation and it was a hot summer day so it was little more difficult than I anticipated. I'm sure the falls flow a bit more in the Spring with the snow melt, but I was impressed with the amount of water falling. I've been spoiled living in AZ my whole life, but I'm looking forward to some new terrain! More NV hikes to come!
