I fell for the allure of a coolish, cloudy morning and headed to the end of Speedway, desperate for some hike time that didn’t involve two hours minimum in the car.

Within minutes of leaving the trailhead the evil sun reared its fiery self and set about roasting me.

I sucked it up and decided to keep going. It was a good thing too, because I got to see lots of critters much better acclimatized to roasting than I.

There was a desert tortoise, two deer, a squirrel, about a dozen lizards, and bugs. I got pictures and video of the tortoise and deer.

Barrel cactus is pretty much it. They look like their crowns are on fire, but maybe that’s the heat getting to me.

Night hike with wifey. Beautiful evening for it, too, with a full moon.

On Douglas, coming out of the wash, we encountered our first rattler of the season. It was concealed in shrubbery off the trail, but didn’t hesitate to make its presence known. It was a grumpy snake and, unlike most, refused to yield and just kept rattling each time we attempted to pass. We did get around but it definitely lodged its grievances as we did so.

Afternoon run/hike intervals. Arrived just after all-day rain and for the first time in ages witnessed an empty parking lot at DS trailhead. Lovely, cool, with low clouds and occasional sprinkles. The rain washed away most of the footprints so the trails had the illusion of being less frequently used than they really are.

Night hike with the fam. Saw two scorpions, a tarantula, and a bunny with beady red eyes that made me check my pockets for a Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch. Having none we bravely ran away.

Quick hike after work. Was easily distracted by shiny things, like exploring the well used social trail up a drainage on Converse (which looked like it would be much more interesting if it had water in it), and a scurrying baby horned lizard on the way back to the trailhead.

Lovely evening for a brisk walk. Felt good and maintained a good pace for the entire trip. Decided to try out the Converse trail, as I’d never found it a useful route to get anywhere. I took it just for grins. It’s a beautiful trail with an interesting landscape; a bit more topsy-turvy than the others around.

Water is definitely drying up.

From Speedway Trail head. Wildhorse Trail to Three Tanks Trail, Three Tanks to Carrillo Trail to The old abandon Bajada Vista Trail. Bajada Vista Trail to Wildhorse Trail and return to Douglas Spring Trail via the Converse Trail. These are excellent hikes for when you just want to get out for a short walk and don't want to drive too far (I live on East side of town). Not a recommended summer hike except in very early morning or late evening.

This was our first hike of 2013! Decided to take a short drive to the Douglas Spring Trailhead and try out our new DSLR camera lense. The hike was an easy one as we wanted to ease our way back into it after not hiking for almost a year. Not much to see if you're used to looking at cacti, at least in the winter.
