Two 14er’s, one hike today. Met Jeff and Donna in Salida on Tuesday evening, we had a wonderful dinner at Ferraro’s Italian restaurant, then walked over to The Tres Litros Brewery a few blocks away for some local beers.
Returned to our rooms around 8, early start in the morning. Joel and Shelly drove in from Crestone to meet at the trail head for the predetermined 0600 start. Like Arizona it’s been hot and dry in Colorado, not a bad thing for doing high peaks. Summited Mt Shavano around 0900, then started (ugh) down the connector trail to Tabeguache, the up trail to the peak.
Returning the way we approached. So up down, up, down up, just to bag the second peak.

After returning to Shavano we did get some light hail, the winds were around 40 Mph when we were on the saddle; strong enough to move us around.
Everyone agreed this was a DNR.

It was a bit confusing to see groups on approach around noon and one PM.

Spent the night at the trailhead listening to elk(?) noises from multiple directions. Got up at 4 to beat the weather and ended up on the trail at 4:40. Initially it was dark, I was exhausted, and the Colorado trail was a swamp. The Shavano trail starts gaining ground quickly, and after sunrise I was going good (and hydrating a lot). Treeline was great- lots of clouds for 6 am, but nothing threatening. The final leg up to the shoulder of Shavano was quite steep, and I needed a big breather once I got there. The final push up to the summit was also steep, but not bad enough to necessitate any breaks.

The unexpected tricky part of the hike was the long bouldery ridge leading down from the top of Shavano to the Shav/Tab saddle. After a pretty easy boulder-hop around snowfields up to Tabeguache, I had to climb back up this ridge (contouring Shavano to get back to the original trail is reportedly a bad idea).

I left the Shavano summit for the second time just before 10am, just as there was graupel coming down and the clouds were getting big. I passed some people and told them I wasn't sure about the weather- no storms yet, but snowing and a little too cloudy. I made it down to treeline at 11, just in time for a pretty bad thunderstorm. Even after the storm had started there were still people going up... I don't know what they were thinking. I made it back to the trailhead a little after noon, drenched but feeling pretty good for that much gain at that altitude.

Shavano and Tabeguache, great area! Racing the weather- got a few sprinkles, and light hail, but below treeline before lightning started.

These 2 peaks are named after ute chiefs. Started in the dark.. At sunrise I was at tree line and it was great. I saw turkey, Marmot, pikas. Another great day in co.
