On my departure day- 6/18 drive out on the Rim Road FR300 from a very enjoyable 6nt/7day vehicle camping/hiking trip on our Mogollon Rim, camping at a different Camp Grasshopper location at 7435ft elevation, I decided to stop by my recommended Vehicle Campsite #4 location only a short distance off of FR300 down FR398.

This Campsite #4 sustained a controlled wildfire burn (The Bear Fire) in June'17 [ photoset ] and I wanted to see what a difference two years makes in recovery. Two years did make a positive difference!

This vehicle campsite is my recommended Autumn camp location for the last week of Sept- first week of Oct to hike and view awesome Maple Colors in the nearby "West Bear Canyon".

On my 7/25/17 drive out on Rim Road FR300 after seven days of vehicle camping down FR139C, I decide to checkout the aftermath of the June'17 "Bear Fire" viewtopic.php?t=10094 to see what was left of favorite Mogollon Rim (FR398) Autumn Campsite #4. I have attached three pics to show the burn which was not that bad but I don't think I would be interested in camping here again until the burn/soot smell went away and until some new green undergrowth started back.

My biggest concern was not the campsite burn status, but rather if one of our primary Autumn off-trail Big Tooth Maple hikes- :next: [ Bear Canyon Upper - West Bear Canyon Loop ] survived this most recent Bear Fire? Unfortunately, I did not have time to hike the short off-trail distance to enter the upper section of West Bear Canyon to confirm one way or the other.

This was my second of a planned two June-Sept 2014 extended "6nt/7day" (Wed-9/24 to Tues-9/30) vehicle camping/hiking/R&R early Autumn visit to one of my favorite Coconino NF- Mogollon Rim area campsites (at 7580 feet elevation with week lows 40F and shaded highs only to 75F) with some beautiful, sunny early Autumn mornings, and with a few nights of unseasonal heavy rains which made for very pleasant

This was day hike two of three for me during this, my planned late September'13 seven day vehicle camping trip to our Mogollon Rim on the prowl for early :FG:

Today's Loop Hike Route: This loop hike begins at the recommended FR398 "Park/TH Start" location, then continued on an easy through-the-woods off trail route (follow my posted 9/29/13 GPS Route) to enter West Bear Canyon (Upper) drainage. Hike continues down West Bear Canyon drainage to a recommended and listed way point exit location for the necessary off trail and up hill segment to connect with lower FR398. This loop hike then continues up FR398 back to Park/TH Start. One may also continue past this above mentioned and listed way point exit location to complete the hike description 5.0 mile loop (which will include the segment of Upper Bear Canyon) as published per the "official" GPS Route.

During this same September hike day last year-2012, this West Bear Canyon was absolutely ablaze 8) in prime Autumn "Big Tooth Maple" colors.. http://hikearizona.com/photoset=21838 . I had planned this years' Sept Camping/Hiking trip to coincide with another hopeful prime Autumn showing.. but we were about 7-10 days too early..what a difference a year makes.. but still a :FG: winner in my books!!

Grasshopper
So, I got an invitation from Hank to join him at Camp Grasshopper this week. Of course, I wasn't going to turn him down, but I knew I was going to have to go on a diet beforehand, just so I could absorb all those yummy extra calories, especially only Hiking one day out of the three....

Day 1: Met up with Hank Wednesday morning and followed him up to the Rim. I was actually familiar with our Camping Spot since we had parked right across from it when we did our West Bear Canyon Hike earlier this summer. Nice Campsite, but it hadn't been used in quite awhile, so while Hank started working on his elaborate set-up, I got the Fire Ring cleaned out and rebuilt. Finished with that, helped Hank with a few things and then got my Camp set up. After that was over, I made some Homemade Guacamole and we snacked for a bit. It was my night for making dinner and I brought Ribeyes. I made the entire dinner on the Campfire Grill that I had, and it wasn't too shabby. We were both stuffed when it was all said and done. Beautiful night with a bright Moon shining overhead. Went to sleep to the sound of several Coyotes singing to each other.... :)

Day 2: Hank ended up having to wake me up, as apparently my Cell Phone got confused with my setting the Alarm in "Airplane Mode". Not too sure what was up with that, but it must have been really confused, because I set it for 7:00 A.M. and the Alarm went off at 1:00 A.M. Friday morning??? Really??? Whatever!!! Arose to the sound of Elk bugling in the Canyons below...Pretty cool. I think the Canyons really emphasized the sound, as it had an Echo effect to it. Can't think of a better way to wake up, that's for sure. :) Got going and did an awesome Hike...(Separate Triplog). Returned back to Camp late afternoon and had some yummy hors d'oeuvres and then Hank prepared his Masterpiece Spaghetti. It was really good and was just the ticket after our Hike.... :) Relaxed around the Fire afterwards and finally hit the sack. The Coyotes weren't singing tonight, but the Moon was very bright again, it may as well have been full, as it lit up everything.... :)

Day 3: I had to return back to town today, but Hank and I had arranged to have a big Cowboy Breakfast first. Before we started firing up the Stoves, I went for a short walk down Forest Road 398, where we were camped. I was curious as to whether you could see into either of the Canyons that flanked us, further down the road. It seemed to be where the Elk Bugling was coming from, and they were bellowing again today. About 1/4 mile down the road, I flushed a herd of Elk about 50 feet to my left. A Spike Bull was with them, but I didn't see him right away, as he was actually laying down when I spotted the others that were with him. He jumped up and hauled a**, so there was no getting any pictures of them. Saw a variety of Birds that were active this morning, a couple of scoldy Squirrels and then I saw "Color". It was on the downslope of West Bear Canyon. Red Maples!!! Very cool and I knew Hank would be pleased as he was planning on Hiking West Bear on Saturday. Turned around and headed back.

Hank and I made quite the Breakfast when I got back. Holy Cow! I can't remember the last time I had a Breakfast like that, even at home or in a Restaurant, much less Camping!!! :o I think Hank was trying to put me into a serious Food Coma for the drive home.... Wild Turkey was not on the Menu this morning, but they must have smelled the food, because we could hear them vocalizing in the Woods. I think they were thanking us for not munching on any Birds during this meal....

Finished packing up and headed out. One dicey spot on this road, but the Escape did good, earning some AZ Pinstriping on the way out. Just before FR300, I saw the Rafter of Turkeys crossing the road, so that was cool. I had somewhere I had to be, in the Valley, but that didn't stop me from some serious Photo Ops on the way out. Man, the Wildflowers along the Rim Edge of FR 300 were amAZing!!! And not just one variety, but several, including some that were Blooming for the second time this year, including Lupines and Thistles. Stopped for a brief, but satisfying Photo Op of those....

I hit Highway 87 and then took 260 towards Camp Verde since I needed to be towards the West part of the Valley on my arrival. I thought my Photo taking was over, but boy, was I wrong!!! Just below the Rim, in the Juniper Grasslands, it was quite the sight to see....There was no Grass, it had been replaced by solid, golden Yellow Blooms that went as far as the eye could see in places. Wow!!! There were a few shots missed, but I ended up stopping twice just to get a couple of shots, it was too good!!!

Finally made it into town, exhausted, still full, and very happy with this Camping Trip. Camp Grasshopper definitely lived up to it's reputation. Hank, your culinary skills are superb!!! It takes talent to do that in a real kitchen, much less, in a Camp Kitchen... : app : Thanks for the invite and the wonderful hospitality. It was truly an event not to be missed!!! : app : : app : : app :

My fourth of four planned (June-Sept) "5 night/6 day" car camping/hiking/R&R summer heat escape visits to one of my favorite Coconino NF- Mogollon Rim camping and hiking areas (at 7570+ feet elevation with week lows 42-46F and highs only 70-75F). This was my first time stay at this FR398 car camping site. No daily Monsoon rains this trip but very pleasant cooler night and daytime temps associated with my late September timing. :)

June through August visits I had much enjoyed devoting significant planning and hiking time exploring and documenting on HAZ all the various Bear Canyon "off trail" day hike and backpack options (south of FR95 to FR300). This fourth, late September'12 trip, was to primarily confirm or deny my previous high expectations that East, West, and Middle Bear Canyon sections held very promising results for excellent Mogollon Rim prime Autumn :FG: Big Tooth Maple and Aspen colors.

In the past, prime Autumn colors in this area of our Mogollon Rim can normally be expected between the second to third week in October which I could have planned for, but my extended camping days in much cooler temps during this period at above 7K' elevation I just really no longer enjoy. Also, I knew from my last year 2011 September six day visit, that our Upper Buck Spring Canyon - Mogollon Rim offered some early nice Autumn Big Tooth Maple colors, so I was in hopes of at least the same for these early Autumn'12 new Bear Canyon area hikes.

Little did I know that my timed trip this ~early Autumn'12 would turn-out to be almost prime season for the numerous Big Tooth Maple in these various "off trail" Bear Canyon hike options :y:

For your consideration, I now Autumn hike rank these as follows:
No 1: Bear Canyon Upper - West Bear Canyon Loop.. http://hikearizona.com/decoder.php?ZTN=16685
No 2: Bear Canyon Upper - East Bear Canyon Loop.. http://hikearizona.com/decoder.php?ZTN=16861
No 3: Bear Canyon (Middle) - Mogollon Rim.. http://hikearizona.com/decoder.php?ZTN=16667

:thanx: Pam and Larry for joining me this trip for both camping and hiking.
