John, our guide was very knowledgable and really brought home how life must have been in 1260 for the inhabitants of the Long House. With a very limited number of folks on the hike, the experience was more intimate than at other cliff dwellings. Perfectly fit my interest in primitive living skills. Great experience. |

At the start of the Long House tour, the ranger told our group that only 10% of Mesa Verde visitors ever make it to Wetherill Mesa. This ruin is almost as big as Cliff Palace. The ranger we had for this tour was the best one we had on our visit. He was very informative and a good speaker. In the back of this ruin are a group of logs that were used for construction that were carbon dated to determine the age of the ruin. Every log had a metal tag on it, probably for research catalog purposes.
The ranger pointed out a hand print on the overhang above the ruin. That seemed crazy how high it was. Until we saw the sticks higher than that which were stuck in the rock cracks. These were used as a primitive rockfall warning device. interesting that even then they had enough engineering knowledge to think of that. |

Afterwards, I took the tram around to the overlook, which offers a different perspective to the size of the massive alcove. |
