This was a hike to Jump Mountain 4878, the highpoint of the Salt River Canyon Wilderness area.

I drove in on FR303, FR645, and a lesser road off of FR645. I parked at a water tank about 0.3 miles from the end of the lesser road. I could have driven to the end but the road was quite eroded past where I parked and it didn't seem worth it to drive further.

I had gone out there back in the spring to do this hike, but the roads were damp and I got stuck in some mud on the way to the TH. Fortunately I was able to get back out by airing my tires down. I do recommend driving the roads only if they are dry!

I had intended to do the hike as a loop, but wound up doing it as an out-and-back.

At the end of the road, I headed west down an eroded roadbed instead of going north through a gate. The roadbed ended at a wash, and the route was to go through the wash and continue north. However, the vegetation was jungle-like and I decided to head north through the was instead to link back up with the road that I would be on had I gone through the gate.

I followed the road for a half mile or so until it ended at a spring box. Then I basically went cross country to the base of Jump Mountain, and then went up the steep slope to the summit.

The cross country was slow going. There was a good bit of catclaw to navigate around. The catclaw wasn't too dense, but I still would get snagged by it occasionally. There were generally gaps and lanes through the brush, and I would basically hike in 50-100 segments. After each segment, I'd stop, look around to find another gap/lane to go through, and proceed for another 50-100 feet. Lather, rinse, and repeat. I eventually got to the base of the peak and headed up.

At the summit I located the benchmark and both reference marks. All were in good condition. There was another bump to the southwest of the benchmark that appeared to be about as high as the benchmark, so I went over there to tag it. I really can't say which is higher.

Views are great at the Jump summit, and once back to the benchmark area I took a long break and enjoyed the views.

The route back went fine, but it was just as slow going as the ascent.

Judging from the entries in the summit register log, this peak is seldom hiked. Three HAZers signed the log in 2013, but there were only 2 other entries in the log since then: one in 2021 and now mine.

Get your camping gear ready for Camp Grasshopper
This should prove to be a great camping outing in a scenic location of the Salt River Canyon. Monday morning, Hank (Grasshopper) drove over to my place and we loaded up my little truck for an exploratory trip out to a spot that he has visited a couple of times in the recent past; http://hikearizona.com/photoset.php?ID=22865

Hank will be posting more explicit details of the trip that he was recording while I was doing the driving :wrt: The weather was perfect with lots of sun and blue Arizona sky's and almost no wind. We had to stop occasionally on the way in to take some photos of the amAZing scenery that lay ahead of us.

Once at the end of the road, we hopped out and began exploring the area for camping sites and fireplaces. The rock formations that Hank had referred to as "white ledges" are spectacular as they extend from far across the Salt River, right through the campsite and continue on to the East. A dry wash flows through the site, makes a 30-foot vertical drop then continues on to the river.

We took pairs of loppers and trimmed the brush from the campsite following an unnamed wash on down to the river where it joins Blackjack Wash at a place in the canyon called Jump-off Canyon. Although Hank recorded the trimmed route on his GPS, I think it would be easy to follow by all the blood I left on the stubble :o There was Catclaw, Cholla, Occotillo, Palo Verde and just about any other blood sucking plant along the trail that we cut back to make a reasonable path leading from the camp to the river.

With the hard work finished we had to test out the facilities by having our lunch at a quickly set-up spot at the campsite and YUP, it's going to work out just fine. Looking forward to next month :y:

This was an exploratory drive on the Haystack Butte road (FR303) and some secondary side roads that went northwest towards the Salt River Canyon. FR303 is a maintained gravel road that was in good condition and driveable for a moderate clearance 2WD vehicle. FR645 was also driveable for a moderate clearance vehicle but had some steep sections that would be questionable for 2WD when wet. FR367 and FR346 started out being high clearance 2WD roads but soon became steep 4WD roads. FR367 had lots of AZ pinstriping brush after about the first mile. The scenery and long distance views from these roads are fabulous.

We were interested in finding a suitable off trail hiking route down to the Salt River and the Salt River Wilderness. Since there are no established trails that I know of in this area any hiking is either on old jeep trails or bushwacking off trail. FR367 leads to Hess Canyon and a possible hiking route down Hess Canyon to the Salt River. Grasshopper and I checked this out and were stopped by a combination of steep drop off and extremely slick rock. We then drove down FR645 to FR346 to check out a possible hiking route down Yankee Joe Canyon. Yankee Joe did not look like a good route to me - the canyon bottom was choked with thorn bushes and lots of vertical rock outcroppings. A post trip inspection of Yankee Joe Canyon on Google Earth showed a major cliff dropoff that would probably rule out this route for anyone without rock climbing skills and equipment.

We drove to the "end" of FR346 which had some steep 4WD sections but no AZ pinstriping opportunities. :D There were some great views of the Sierra Anchas and Cherry Creek Canyon to the northwest across the Salt River Canyon. FR346 ended at a corral but a jeep trail/ATV track continued across a draw and over the next hill to the north east to Yankee Joe tank. This is an active cattle ranching area. Many of the corrals show evidence of still being in use and there is a curious system of piping water to distant water troughs through miles of above ground black plastic tubing from hilltop water tanks. We sighted many "slow elk" along the roads.

After a great day of exploring this new (for us) area we headed back to Phoenix with a stop at Chalo's Mexican Restaurant in Globe for dinner.

A very rewarding and interesting day in a new area I had not yet visited.

Exploratory morning day hiking down "Hess Canyon" with scenic afternoon driving on local FRs to scout-out other possible off trail hikes within this remote area of the Tonto NF- "Salt River Canyon Wilderness".

While our Sierra Ancha Wilderness and Mogollon Rim are socked-in winter conditions, this SRC Wilderness area with mid to lower altitudes and much to offer, should be an excellent winter hiking alternative choice. Thanks to ASU Aviator and Little Knee for initially leading me astray via their posted pic.. http://hikearizona.com/photo.php?ZIP=295188 which allowed me to further research (with Larry's help) this SRC Wilderness area :D
