| no partners | | Since December, most of my hikes have been in the Flagstaff area. It was nice to switch it up and do something a little closer to home. I noticed there were no GPS tracks posted for this one so I posted the track for whoever is next.
This hike is 100% bushwhack and there is a lot of loose rock. Not the small, slippery gravel stuff, although it does exist in places. No, it’s the larger golf ball to tennis ball size stuff that rolls ankles that gave me fits. It’s all over so be careful. Parts of this hike are extra steep and of course the large loose rock is often more prevalent there. Having said that, it’s really no big deal as long as you take it a little slower and watch your footing.
There is a big rock face directly south of the road where I parked. You have to get behind it on your way up. I veered to the east of it going up and to the west side of it on the way down. Going up on the east side looks a little easier. There is a flat area behind the big rock. After I reached that, I stayed on the ridge line up to the next rock face. At this point I again went to the east side of the rock face up a wash/ravine and onto another flat-ish spot. From there it’s more up while eventually skirting a third rock outcropping along the west side to a third saddle. Up past this saddle you reach the peak.
There is a large pile of rocks on the top, probably about 3-4 feet high. I saw a registry buried in there but didn’t bother with it. Somebody left what looks like an glass apple cider jug on top of the pile of rocks. It’s half full of dead, sun bleached ants. I’ve never seen anything like that before. Of course there were great views of Fountain Hills to the south and Bartlett Lake to the east. |
