After driving past the Dromedary Peak dozens of times, I finally decided to hike it. Plus I always like to add benchmark photographs to my collection, and I knew this peak had a benchmark and two reference marks.

Today was a cool and sunny day. The road was in good condition all the way to the 'trailhead' where I parked (used the official route posted on HAZ). The road was a little rocky in places, but any vehicle could make it. This is state trust land (state land permit required), and the road has a gate just after exiting highway 60. I was happy that it wasn't a difficult gate to open & close.

The hike wasn't as steep as I was expecting, and soon enough I was on the top. Along the way there were some small puddles with ice on a few rocks. With no official trail to the top, I followed game trails whenever I saw them. It was amazing the number of natural steps while heading up, which made the hike much easier.

Found a summit cairn with a register underneath inside a glass peanut butter jar. The notebook that I signed had not been signed since April of 2023. After returning the register to its place, I photographed all of the survey markers (dated 1938), which were easy to spot. The views are magnificent, especially of the Superstitions and Weaver's Needle to the north.

The hike down was easy with a little bit of boulder hopping. Nothing very steep. Overall it was a nice summit and short hike.

The weather was just too nice out to stay indoors, so I hastily threw together my bag and headed out. Only later did I realize I left my GPS on the counter, but oh well. It would have been helpful to guide me back down the same route. Kicked around on top for a short time, recovering an old geocache that had been archived and replaced the container with a newer one.

Nice little hike. Drove in a little ways past the gate to the first open area. Parked close - but not to close - to two trailers that had stacks of bee farms on them. Got on the trail just before 5 am. Temps were great once again. Walked the road for a short ways and then started my way up the slope that became steeper as I preceded. Ironically, at some point, it almost became stair like. Initially, the hardest thing was finding the best route through the shrubs and cacti. The route up the slope was there with multiple options: I never had to force my through brush during the hike. Near the top the boulders became more prominent and it became more of a rock hopping scramble. Nothing too gnarly. Reached the top and found the summit log. The pen wasn't working so I couldn't sign in at first. Upon the exploring the top, I found a geocache with all kinds of odd stuff, including a pencil which I used to sign the summit register. Nice views from the top. The south side has a decent drop off and I noticed a couple of spots where rings had been embedded in the rock for technical climbing. No wildlife, though I did come upon the carcass of a big born sheep. Not sure what got him, though one triplogs said they had seen mountain lions near the top.

This is a great hike! I was afraid my Toyota Corolla would get stuck crossing the wash. There was a lot of soft dirt/gravel. So I hiked it in from just inside the grate. It didn't add much to the overall mileage. My GPS tracks indicated 1.8 miles round-trip. I didn't see any cattle as others reported. I followed BEEBEE's tracks more or less and I didn't notice any cairns on the way up so decided to place a few on the way down. I must have missed some existing ones on the way up because I saw two or three coming down. Now there are more, but still not enough to follow the whole way. The rock-hopping was enjoyable to me. I like navigating boulders much more than cactus and cat-claw. I was harassed by three or four bees while on top. There must be a hive near by. I mostly just ignored 'em until one crawled up my pant-leg. I didn't get stung but there's one less bee in the world. The view is enjoyable. I worked some radio for SOTA and looked for some of the markers on top. Really had fun.

I needed something short and not time-consuming. This one fit the bill. I only went up the taller east hump. The west hump didn't look like it had much to offer. The summit is bigger and flatter than it looks from the US60. There's a few boulders in contention for "true summit", but one definitive winner. Just below the summit is a giant crevice that looks caved-in. Possibly an old mine or cave, probably just a bizarre geologic feature.

After the hike I went over to Central Arizona College. I attended an event hosted by Superstition Area Land Trust (SALT). A photographer and avid hiker talked about the seven days he spent in the Superstition backcountry with a shattered patella. The entire time he was out there he was taking pictures so he told his story like a photo essay. It was incredible to hear and informative too. I learned a few tidbits about backcountry survival. I hope to never have to use them...

I decided to take advantage of the cool monsoon morning and hit Dromedary and get the additional summer bonus points for a SOTA activation and the added bonus of it being its first time on the air made it even more fun.

The hike up is not to difficult and the views were great.

I made 34 contacts from coast to coast and Canada along with contacts of 4 other SOTA guys on peaks in Arizona and Northern California.

This one was thrown together quick.

I have wanted to hike up this for a while, so today was the day. This was a great hike with a great 360' view. I'll be doing this one again. :y:

After setting up to camp near Florence Junction with a group of friends, cindyl and i went out for a wandering drive. Along the way we decided to head for the south side of Dromedary and hike up. We found a convenient parking spot and made our way up to the saddle then east to the peak. We enjoyed the views and took a few photos of the survey monuments before heading back down pretty much the same way we came up. A nice day apart the noise from many people target shooting nearby.

This was the first climb of what will be another three-summit day. Although it was steep, I reached the summit in under 45 minutes, which belied just how tough it was. The 90 degrees wasn't bad until you add the 48% humidity... it felt simply oppressive!
I'd much rather hike in the heat of the day when the humidity is almost non-existent.

The top of the mountain was pretty flat with plenty of areas to explore but with two more peaks to go I just took enough time to sign the summit log (first log was from 1996), locate the three USC&GS markers and a few summit photos before heading back. While at the summit I heard shooting from the west so when I took a photo of the western and lower peak I looked over and saw two guys doing some target practice.

While at the summit I noticed a road I hadn't known about previously that lead up the canyon to the east. Although I had not loaded the waypoint as a peak to climb today, I knew there was a peak over that way that was on my list to climb eventually. So on-the-spur-of-the-moment I decided that would be my second climb for the day.

On my descent of Dromedary I heard a small gas engine, which eventually I determined was a generator for someone with a semi-permanent camp a few hundred yards from the US 60. I had noticed the camp when I drove in before 6 am and nothing was stirring at that time.

Due to the humidity I was drenched with sweat so back at the trailhead I washed up a bit, caught up on my fluids and started my drive to the next peak.

I posted 25 photos on HAZ, the full set of 34 photos can be found here:

Dromedary Mountain does look like a dromedary. Knowing there's a triangulation benchmark named DROMEDARY up there, I took a little hike to the top, found the benchmarks, and took some photos.

It becomes immediately obvious that ranchers lease the area for grazing cattle, as I "met" a few of the critters along this short, steep hike. One "side-of-beef" must have thought he was a sub-species known as "stealth-wannabe". The critter kept attempting to hide behind small clumps of cactus or brush, peeking out at me, while he was actually still quite exposed. Good for him for his efforts.
Close the gate after you drive in, so the cattle don't get friendly with Rte 60 traffic.

The surveyors monumented DROMEDARY Triangulation Station in 1938, and also set two reference marks atop the mountain. All three are in excellent shape. The surveyors used an earlier, already established, benchmark for Dromedary's Azimuth Mark. Benchmark "N 107" has double-duty as a normal survey benchmark and as an azimuth for Dromedary. N 107 was put in place 3 years earlier (1935), to the north. It's located just north of the original 2-lane Rte 60 (which is north of present day, realigned 4-lane Rte 60) I went over and checked on the Azimuth mark after this hike and it's in excellent shape also.

The top of Dromedary Mountain has typical terrain and plant life that you would expect, with an abundance of boulders to hike on and around. A summit log and a geocache live up there also. Views from the top are very good, especially to the north and northwest.

I have a couple photos of some insects, for all you insect experts. Please tell me what they're called. They were very busy eating fresh new shoots of vegetation as I hiked by. Good looking and colorful little guys.

Dromedary Mountain could easily be combined with a few other mountains to the south, to make a nice full day hike experience. I might do that next time I'm there.
