Fun short hike, great views. Should be called prickly ridge. No wildlife although I did see signs.

Took advantage of the slightly cooler weather. Parked along FR 1705 and continued along the track and went up Black Mesa from the northeast side (least steep approach, I think). On the top I went over to the high point in the northwest corner. I didn’t see a benchmark or a summit log. Went back the same way.

My first ascent was October 9, 2012 so I figured it was about time for a repeat. Since it would be the steepest, most hazardous hike since my back surgery, the moment Black Mesa came into sight along FR 1697 I spent the whole time scanning the slopes intensely before choosing the final route. Thankfully I hit a very well-used game trail and followed it all the way up.

Only found a few new entries to the summit log since 2014... an 'RPC' in 2013, Bob Packard in 12014 and another in January of 2018. I was a bit surprised because I expected an entry by FLYING-FLIVER on his 2015 trip.

I planned on taking the same descent route as my first trip (similar to FLIVER's) but there was a pair of old-geezer's shooting toward that slope. I did pass by close enough to notice they had what looked like a .50 caliber M-249 SAW (Squad Automatic Weapon), and it sure sounded like it. Oh yeah, I didn't get close enough to see for sure, but another shooter along FR 1697 had what appeared to be a Barrett rifle, and again it definitely had the sound of a .50 cal. And here I hoped I had gone far enough away from Phoenix to get some peace and quiet.
(Although in truth, between the two guns they didn't fire any more than a dozen shots during the3 hours I was in the area... the cost of .50 cal ammunition may have something to do with that.)

Now I'm just wandering and exploring on the way back to the 4Runner... I could have driven much closer to Black Mesa but since my hiking is part of my physical therapy I wanted to get in a bit more.

Just across from where I parked I noticed what appeared to be haphazard ruin walls, so of course I had to check it out. On the way over I spotted a box I just had to check out... the answer is in the photoset.
Once I circled around for the easiest ascent route I realized it was the same site Eric visited in January. As I ate lunch I wandered around, locating over a dozen potsherds.

Overall a great day to be out hiking!

I was up on Diamond Mountain four days ago, looking south (and down) at this mesa, and thought it would be a good little hike. I decided to ‘de-mystify’ the little mesa.

There are quite a few Black Mesas in Arizona. This one is south of Sunflower, Az and just west of Rte 87. It’s in the area where the north and south lanes of Rte 87 ‘cross’ each other for a few miles.

Black Mesa is just less than a mile long and about 1/2 mile wide at its widest point. I hiked the entire perimeter counter-clockwise. The mesa is covered in tall grass and black rocks, and it’s home to billions of prickly pear cactus. They cover the majority of the ‘non-rock’ areas.
I climbed up on the mesa’s east side and headed to the high point on the north end. There’s a north-south depression running through the center of the mesa that ends in a large drainage toward the south. From the north end, I continued on the west perimeter toward the lower, pointy south end.. There are good views of Pk 3570 just to the west. It’s smaller than Black Mesa, but looks exactly like it.

From the south point, I went up to the second highest point, on the east side.
This second high point is where AZDOT placed a benchmark in 1982. The AZ Dept of Transportation placed dozens of benchmarks along the sides of Rte 87 in the early 1980s, with most of them just off the highway near the highway fence line. Their purpose probably had to do with building the present highway alignment and four lanes etc. The one on Black Mesa is called ‘Blacky’ and is a bit tougher to get to than the fence line BMs.

I saw six or seven deer prancing around on the mesa, and found a few areas where they probably bed down. Once they saw me, they stared for awhile and then left the mesa on the west side. I also heard a rattle snake amongst some of the perimeter rocks, but I never saw him (her). Once off the mesa, I had a staring contest with some cattle near Big Rincon Tank. I never seem to win those contests.

It was a nice little hike, and I now have ‘de-mystified’ the mesa.

The east side of black Mesa looked 100% more realistic to climb than what I saw from the other side on Peak 3570 just an hour or so ago. Still, I took my time scanning the slope for the best option. It turned out the best route was to follow a ridge at an oblique angle from the SE up to the center of the eastern slope. This brought me to the top at a relatively easy rocky area.

Once at the top of the eastern ridge I realized I was on the opposite side of the mesa from the actual summit. I debated whether to take a beeline, dropping down into the center of the mesa or to follow the rocks in a semi-circle around to the north.

I started on the rocks but with plenty of thorny objects in with the rocks I made the turn to the summit. Like Peak 3570 the summit are was pretty flat so I wandered a bit. First I found a geocache but it was not at the summit so I kept wandering. Eventually I reached the summit and found a summit log, to which I added an entry.

On the return I stuck right along the edge of the rocky ridge all the way around from the NW to the SE before turning back and taking my original route back down to the trailhead just south of Big Rincon Tank.
