It had been over 27 years since someone had logged an ascent of this peak on HAZ, so I figured that it was about time that someone else hiked up there!

The Cottonwood Mountains are in Mojave County, about 35-40 miles east of Kingman. The unnamed highpoint has a spot elevation of 6,631 feet and prominence of 1,121 feet. The range got their name from the Cottonwood Cliffs on the west side.

I exited I-40 at the Willow Ranch Road exit and drove about 10 miles on dirt roads until I got to a wire crumple gate, where I parked. The roads were in pretty good shape -- a crossover SUV could have easily driven to where I parked. There is lots of private property on the way in, but as long as you stay on the well marked "designated access route", there is no issue with driving in.

I could have driven in past the crumple gate, but the road got worse past the gate so I just walked it. I stayed on the road for about 0.7 miles, and then hiked off-trail NW to the summit. The off-trail was mostly walking through open country, although there was a bit of light bushwhacking. Once I left the road, there was a fairly steep climb of about 300 feet, which was followed by a relatively modest grade. Things got steep again in the last 400 feet or so to the summit. The summit was on a fairly flat plateau, and the walking was easy once I got up there.

There was no obvious highpoint, so I wandered around a bit so as to hopefully hit the highpoint. There were some juniper trees at the summit, which blocked some but not all of the views.

It was a very pleasant day up there, which made for an enjoyable hike. It was a fairly easy off-trail hike for the most part. I never saw any cottonwood trees, but there are lots of juniper trees.

Kind of hard to navigate all the roads but we eventually get close and hike the old road to the ridge and along to the summit. This was the second attempt after failing to reach the top the previous year

This was our first trip here. There is a maze of roads to follow (gps makes it easier now!). It took us a while to find the "trailhead" we made it up to the ridge but turned back at turnaround time before reaching the high point.
