The Cottonwood Mountains are in Mojave County, about 35-40 miles east of Kingman. The unnamed highpoint has a spot elevation of 6,631 feet and prominence of 1,121 feet. The range got their name from the Cottonwood Cliffs on the west side.
I exited I-40 at the Willow Ranch Road exit and drove about 10 miles on dirt roads until I got to a wire crumple gate, where I parked. The roads were in pretty good shape -- a crossover SUV could have easily driven to where I parked. There is lots of private property on the way in, but as long as you stay on the well marked "designated access route", there is no issue with driving in.
I could have driven in past the crumple gate, but the road got worse past the gate so I just walked it. I stayed on the road for about 0.7 miles, and then hiked off-trail NW to the summit. The off-trail was mostly walking through open country, although there was a bit of light bushwhacking. Once I left the road, there was a fairly steep climb of about 300 feet, which was followed by a relatively modest grade. Things got steep again in the last 400 feet or so to the summit. The summit was on a fairly flat plateau, and the walking was easy once I got up there.
There was no obvious highpoint, so I wandered around a bit so as to hopefully hit the highpoint. There were some juniper trees at the summit, which blocked some but not all of the views.
It was a very pleasant day up there, which made for an enjoyable hike. It was a fairly easy off-trail hike for the most part. I never saw any cottonwood trees, but there are lots of juniper trees. |
