On my way back to my hotel, I stopped here to check it out.

Plenty of parking and off I went. This trail switchbacks it's way up and then over to the highpoint. Great views of different parts of the island until you reach the peak. Up top, there's a 360 view of the eastern portion of the island.

There's a few slightly tricky sections getting to the high point.

A worthy hike if in the area.

Trying to catch up on my Kauai triplogs. The name of the hike comes from the shape of the ridgeline, which looks like, well, a sleeping giant, with the giant's forehead at the summit. We stayed in an AirBnB in Kapa'a, with a yard that looks straight up at the giant.

This is a fantastic hike with 360 degree views of a large swath of the island, and panorama-photo lover's dream from the "chin" of the giant.

Among the cornucopia of hikes on this island, it's hard to narrow down a list of "don't miss" hikes, but I sure put this one in the mix. Because it's relatively short and easily accessible, it only takes as much time as you care to stop and oogle at the views.

On my way down, I crossed some trail runners and even a mountain biker.

Two thumbs up on this one!

10 day Hawaiian vacation first 5 on Kauai second 5 on Oahu. Lots of hiking tubing and outdoor activities on Kauai. 1 on my list was hiking and getting a sota activation in on KH6 (the ham radio prefix for the Hawaiian islands). This peak is in view of the hotel and has a trail so lets do this. The first 1/4 mile is very muddy and comparable to hiking on ice. Once you get higher and get more sun exposure the trail dries out and becomes more manageable and faster. I had an inexperienced hiker with me so it was slow going at first but after the dry out we moved and before we knew it we reached the summit. I made several contacts back to the states as far as Kansas. A successful hike and SOTA activation. On to more adventures in Kauai and soon Oahu.

Quick trip up the mountain outside of Kapa'a on a zero day. Great views to the sea and lowlands below. I think the colors would be nicer in afternoon once the sun is behind you. Since we were here in the morning, the Pacific was washed out looking into the sun. Surprisingly few people on trail for a Saturday morning, though a few were listening to music on speakers so this kind of thing happens in paradise too. ](*,)

This got me to over 15k on the week and I was feeling it on the way up. Glad to have seen these views though. Definitely a worthwhile couple hours if you're in this nick of the neck.

Had to get back to the 'otel in time for mid-morning beer, beach, etc.

On our final day in Kauai, Chumley and I headed over to Sleeping Giant for a quick hike. We arrived at the parking area around 8am and started the hike up. The trail is in great condition and makes numerous switchbacks as you gain elevation. We made good time and took a variety of pics. There are a few easy scrambles near the top and we topped out to enjoy the views.

Once up top we took a short break on the true summit. I followed a spur trail down a hundred feet or so to a nice viewpoint. Chumley and I then headed over to the north lookout. There is some mild exposure but not a big deal. We took a few pics and then dropped down a bit and followed a spur trail to a few windows that lead to epic views of Kapaa and the Pacific Ocean.

From there we started our descent and flew down. This was a really nice hike and was the perfect way to end our trip. We went back to our hotel and hung out till evening and then headed over to the airport where we caught a red eye back to Phoenix.

This popular hike just to the west of Kapaa was one we learned of by word of mouth. The mountain does resemble the outline of a sleeping giant but we had not planned it as a hike. This moderate trail begins to climb as soon as you leave the trailhead, as we climbed we were aware of a cacophony of animals calling out below: cows, chickens, dogs, native birds, all seemed to be trying to outdo each other. For the most part this morning we hiked in the cool shade of thick vegetation, it was only by the summit that the trees seemed to give way to smaller plants. Views from the giant's chin and forehead are outstanding.
