A smaller subset of the group did a second canyon over the weekend. I had done Immaculate a few years ago and I had very little memory of the trip except for the long rappel through the big crack.

Our goal was to try to stay dry. We did the first rappel and then found a bypass for the new couple rappels to avoid some pools. Then we entered the beautiful slot. Immaculate has longer rappels which was nice after having a lot of short rappels in Illusions the day before. We did all kinds of shenanigans to stay dry. It’s funny how that can take the whole Journey to another level. It’s also fun to watch how people solve such puzzles. Everyone stayed dry except for me - I fell in to one pool up to my thighs - not a big deal since I was able to stay dry the rest of the trip.

We got out at the sneak route parking and started to get ready when our friend's girlfriend bit the dust with a seizure. Crap... There was no way they were going so Joel and I decided we were prepared to go it alone. We helped our friend get her in his car and then we were off. I just had to carry more rope than I planned.

I admit I was a bit shaken from the thought that this girl could have seized in the middle of this canyon. I thought about it a lot...

Joel and I got to the first rappel and suited up. It was a pretty drop into a shallow pool. From there we found a route to bypass the next section. We didn't see any anchors so we figured we'd just do what everyone else was doing. The second rappel was awesome. It was probably 180 feet. We got down and started the pull. About 20 feet came and then no matter how hard we pulled nothing more came. That was a big problem. All we had left was a 100 foot rope and no idea what else to expect! I had on my normal vertical caving gear on so I jugged up about 160 feet and fixed everything while Joel held what we had already pulled so I didn't have to worry about slipping. I was sweating bad because it was a dry rappel and I was in a wet suit. This whole procedure was very time and energy consuming!

The next rappel was again a fairly long one to a bolt. There wasn't much room and it made pulling the rope and organizing it very unruly. I went first on the next rappel because we ended up just throwing down what appeared to be a tangled mess and it went into a pool. I got into the pool and was able to get the rope out of the way of some logs. I couldn't always touch but the exit was a fairly easy beached whale move. After that rappel we had a few others that started to blend together. I remember rappelling off a dead man and another anchor that someone had rigged off a small window feature and a rock-chock.

Finally, we were on our way out. We went up the crazy sneak route. When you managed to stay on route you could use the "steps" kicked into the steep sandy slope by the previous party. At times it seemed like the route just faded away. Think of it as one step forward and a few steps back. I remember mumbling something about whether or not this sneak route was really worth it. Of course it is seeing how the regular route is miles longer.

I was so happy to reach the top! We got back to the car and found a note that our friends had rejoined up for the eclipse. We found the best campsite ever to watch such an event!

You know what my favorite thing is about camping in Sedona? The cool temps, tall pines, fresh air and... loud techno music blasting from a big nearby rave ALL NIGHT LONG. Despite the fact that the next morning, many of us were cranky and sleep-deprived, we hit the trail bright and early for Immaculate canyon. Wow, gorgeous! Easy approach, mossy sculpted walls and some fun rappels with a great group. Took the sneak route out. Excellent day!

We started out by climbing up the AB Young trail. Once on top, we followed the forestry roads to the drainage for Immaculate. The drop in was very easy to find although there are a lot of downed trees and brush in this drainage. That was no surprise though.

We encountered 10 rappels in the canyon with one drop having a tricky pull due to the crack in the wall. We were careful and it turned out not to be an issue. There wasn't much water in this canyon and wet suits were not required.

The exit in the canyon was required more bushwhacking that nearby canyons require. It was pretty thick with brush. Once we exited onto West Fork Oak Creek, we made a right turn and headed downstream to Call of the Canyon.
