I got the idea to hike Vineyard Mountain from @Mike_W . I put off the hike for a few months to avoid stealing his thunder. 😇

It was 33℉ in Tonto Basin at 7:45 a.m. Brrr! I would have done this hike anyway, but was not relishing the thought. By 8:00 a.m. at the dam lookout, it was 43℉. Not a meteorologist, but thankful for whatever oddity caused that. Still, I waited an hour to head out, so I’d have half decent light for taking photos.

Halfway up the first 1/2 mile climb, at a right-hand switchback, there is a line of rocks to the left. If you go left, it is about 200 easy off trail yards to the best view of the dam. Pipes are embedded in the rocky promontory, and sections of cement wall are dotted about it. I wonder what that stuff was? Does not appear conected to the old construction camp.

On the north side of Inspiration Point, there’s a welcome twenty foot dip. In shade at 10:00 a.m., that dip is where I found the first non-brittlebush flowers of my hike, tuber anemone and paintbrush. A helicopter made a run east over the lake, turned down canyon, then came back overhead, not far up. 🚁

From the saddle, it is only fifty feet up to the summit of Inspiration Point. I should have done it, but didn’t.

The second climb ends near the microwave relay. At least that is what it looks like. Can't find any info online. 🤔

Where you should turn off to the summit, I built a cairn. It is only 150 grassy off trail feet up to the summit. Some of the grass was 12″ high.

The first entry in the summit log was Bob Martin. Of course. Only surprise is it wasn’t the other Arizona peak bagging legend Bob Packard. Now I — a non-legend — am also in the summit log. (Though calling this a “peak bag” is stretching it a wee bit.)

I made it back to my car in only 40 min. (Not counting stops for the flowers that were beginning to appear in now 60℉ direct sunlight.) I was surprised to encounter two other hikers on what I thought was an obscure trail, and there were a half dozen vehicles at the trailhead when I returned. No idea where they went. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Overall light, but brittlebush between microwave relay and summit were moderate-substantial.

I arrived to the trailhead with Brian in the morning around 9.40 am. We got some nice photos of the lake in the background. To get to the AZ trail / Vineyard trail, you need to cross the road and walk behind the guard rail. Then, you will see a sign up ahead.

The trail starts climbing up and for the first 1/4 mile you will have some nice views of the Roosevelt lake bridge and the lake. The views of the lake will continue for roughly the first 3/4 mile of the trail.

The trail was maintained very well the entire way, however it was quite rocky in many places. For the first 1/2 mile, there were a few switchbacks. After this, the trail continues up and goes around a place called Inspiration point. Once you get around Inspiration point, you will climb a steep trail and arrive at a small saddle. From the saddle, Inspiration point will block part of the view of the lake. We decided there was no reason to climb inspiration point, even though it would only take about 5 minutes. We had some incredible views of the lake along the way.

After the saddle we continued follow the trail up. There was a huge structure that looked like some kind of antenna, but we were not sure what it was. The top was a square grid of white panels, maybe 20 feet by 20 feet and the panels were maybe 30 feet off the ground.

We continued up the trail and when we got close to Vineyard peak, we went off trail and did roughly a 0.25 mile open Country hike to the high point. At the high point we found a plastic jar registry that was cracked and rained on. I had a glass jar so I upgraded the registry, drying out the pages and taking photos of the registry pages that were readable. We used more rocks to cover the jar so that even indirect sunlight would not get in. It's important to protect the jar from any sun rays to minimize the fraying of the paper and damage to the registry.

We walked a few hundred feet from the high point down toward the salt river to get some nice photos. We only had a drink at the summit since it was too early for lunch, then headed back down the trail the same way. On the way down we stopped at the huge antenna and took a break here in the shadow. This was a good place to eat lunch and it was already after 12.

After lunch we headed back down to the trail to the trailhead.

Hike 1 of a 2 hike day. The weather was too nice not to climb high above the Salt River and soak in the views. Vineyard Mountain has a flat summit, but a small cairn marks the location of the summit register. BobP's name confirmed I was in the right place. Several other people were on the trail today. I passed some AZT thru-hikers on the way down. Someday, maybe...

I decided to take the day off and at 8am I decided on this "hike". Most people will be better off driving to Mills Ridge and starting there. I wanted to hit Vineyard Mountain so I started from the bridge. Took the Vineyard trail and then easy off-trail to the top of Vineyard Mountain. Did some more off trail up the wash and got to Mills Ridge. The trail workers were making Four peaks trail look like a Scottsdale trail. I know they work hard and have grant money but...... :wrt: . Moving on the off-trail to Camelback was brutal. The route off was good for about .25 miles and then was brutal. It was.... in the drainage out of the drainage snow traverses hellish manzanita and mean Holly. Finally, Buckhorn creek made for a nice way down. Next I went to the ruins and then did a little double time on the ridge. And pretty much stayed on trail until I was startled by a bright light down canyon. Next thing I know a aircraft is hovering with yellow/goldish lights. I got freaked out and realized I was off-trail but quickly fixed it. Very freaky night. Maybe it was some spaceship like drone that is being tested. :scared: or maybe it was aliens.

Steep but well-maintained trail departs from the north end of the bridge at Roosevelt Dam. Nice flora and the remains of terraces in the hillside from the workers who built the original dam. Went offtrail to bag Vineyard Mountain proper where there is great stone seating overlooking the Apache Trail and dam below.
