I've had this on my to-do list for several years. Finally worked the timing out and snagged a permit. Went with my wife, one of my kids, and some extended family members.

Picked up the permit the day before in Zion NP.

Started at the Wildcat Canyon TH at 6:40 a.m. No other cars in the parking area--a good sign.

The trail to the edge of the "rim" is well-defined, but from there to actual drop-in point at creek level was indistinct and could be challenging to follow for significant sections. Good to have a GPS route.

The forecast temperature was for 111 degrees, so when the ranger asked if we'd be wearing wetsuits, I said: Uh, no. It was the right call (though I have canyoneered other slots in the summer heat and been glad to have a wetsuit!).

Although the creekbed hiking is the gem, the trail to the creekbed is also quite beautiful, with the sandstone geology on full display.

Once in the creekbed, the hike just got more amazing. I expected it to be spectacular, but it still exceeded my expectations.

As for the rappels, we bypassed the first rappel via a crack on the right, where a large tree allows some semi-awkward downclimbing. The second rappel is really a short 10-foot drop, for which we just used a length of webbing as support. The only "mandatory" rappel was the final one just above the Subway itself. It is also short. 50' of rope is sufficient. All rappel spots were supported by bolted anchors with relative fresh webbing.

There was one other spot that required a short jump into a deep pool from a chockstone.

At the Subway, we encountered two other small groups--a couple from Israel that had overtaken us on the way down, and another small group that had hiked up from the bottom. Given that they release 80 permits a day, we enjoyed relative solitude.

Although the Subway was an absolute gem, I think the best parts of the hike are above the Subway, and not accessible from the bottom--including the famous lone tree/log spot.

Below the Subway, there are several cascades that were fun to see and experience as well.

The NPS warns against drinking the creek water (even filtered) and advises to filter from one of the springs that flows into the creek. There is a nice spring around the corner below the Subway on the right hand side (looking downstream) for this purpose.

It was getting predictably hot as we continued down canyon, but frequent dips in the creek kept us cool.

We met a handful of small groups coming up from the bottom as we descended. One guy was uber-concerned about a scratch he had sustained getting infected by the bacteria-filled water and serially asked several in our group how worried he should be. I considered telling him that (in my expert opinion) he was a goner, but ultimately went with: Take a good shower when you get home; I think you'll be fine.

One of our party had done the Subway several times and advised that the dinosaur tracks were near the turn up to exit the canyon. that turned out not to be accurate (they are further up the canyon), so I was a little bummed to have missed that landmark, but just one of many reasons to return!

The climb up was steep, but relatively short. Myself and another in our group marched ahead of the group to retrieve our shuttle car.

I'd post my route, but with the GPS pinging all over the place, it recorded about 22 miles and 3600 AEG, so not particularly helpful. :-)

A truly amazing place!

This was a pretty spectacular low key canyoneering route for us and it was as fulfilling as just about anything I can think of in recent memory. I have no idea how the permit system works, or what you do to get one, Katie and I were invited on the trip.

We started at the upper trailhead just before 6:30 a.m. and shortly after that we were beginning our magical descent down the ancient hardened sand dunes that make up the spectacular Navajo Sandstone layer found throughout Zion. There was a short fun class four scramble to reach the canyon floor and then the fun began.

The Canyon was probably about as scenic of a canyon, as I have passed through. The attractions seemed to be non stop, from narrow walls, to subalpine firs, tall conifers, carved waterways, gushing springs at the base of the sandstone and idyllic, cold, clear water swimmers. The canyon really had it all.

In terms of the technical aspects, the raps were all bolted, short in length and not overly technical in nature. I do not know enough about canyoneering to make a definitive statement, but I would think this would fall under the category of a beginner canyon.

We did not see any people until we made our final rap, which placed us at perhaps the highlight of the day, the Subway. After a quick break at one of the few spots in the canyon the sun was reaching, we parted ways with the other two people in our group, so we could finish at a quicker pace and begin our drive back to Phoenix.

I had no idea what to expect when we accepted the invite and even had some apprehensions about the crowds etc, but I left with exceeded expectations and awestruck. An amazing location and a fun and engaging way to see a canyon.

Amazing adventure! Went with a great group including a couple of veteran subway folks. It made for a very smooth first run through the subway! We did a hand line down the first obstacle, a webbing down the waterfall, and for the last obstacle some of us rapelled and others jumped and then did a batman hand line. It was a very enjoyable experience. Most of our group came in through Das boot, but two of us are not experienced canyoneers, and so took the traditional subway route in. Very beautiful place! The two of us who did not do Das boot did not have wetsuits. It was cold in the pools which was expected. It wasn't too bad given the air temperature being so high.

Once out of the subway, the canyon is beautiful, but the rock hopping can be slow going. And the ascent out of the canyon was a bit tedious after a long day. There was also fear of missing the turn off to get out of the canyon and ending up with having to turn around and find it or go ten miles to the town of virgin to exit the canyon.

All in all, a magnificent event. What a marvelous adventure! 😀😀😀

My second trip down Subway via the top-down route. :GB:

This is a fun canyon with fairly long hikes on both the approach and exit. The technical part of the canyon isn't all that difficult or long, so suitable for most any experienced hiker. Extremely scenic as a bonus for any photographers in the group.

Warm air temperatures meant we didn't need wetsuits. Some of the swims are quite cold because sun never hits some of the pools and springs add their own cold water along the way, but this is a fairly open canyon in places, meaning there are always nearby patches of sun to warm up in as needed.

The hike out after the subway portion was its usual lengthy self. Especially long with our group of less "broken-in" hikers.

As I felt last time, this canyon is definitely worth doing again, but I probably won't be back soon. Das Boot sounds like it adds to the experience, so maybe try for the combo?

Having hiked to the Subway via the bottom-up route many times over the years, it was very exciting to finally do the entire route through. :GB:

This was a fun canyon with a fairly long, but enjoyable, slickrock approach, and a longish hike out along the Left Fork of North Creek. The technical part of the canyon wasn't all that difficult or long, but the scenic aspects more than made up for that :D - this canyon is a photographer's dream come true.

Unseasonably warm temperatures (high of 102F) meant we didn't need to wear wetsuits. The first swim was cold because sun never hits the pool, but there were always patches of sun to warm up in as needed. One interesting thing was that while swimming some sections, you could actually feel where different underwater springs emerged and added their colder or warmer water to the main flow.

There was a small moment of disappointment that the volcanic choke stone I had heard you get the swim under was not the case at this time. So many logs are wedged under the stone there was no way under. Instead, you had to use the logs to climb up onto the rock and carefully come down the other side into a pool (handline helpful). Beware the tilted log on the downstream side - very, very slick!

The hike out after the subway portion was its usual self - long if you're running low on time or energy. We stopped and filtered fresh water right before the steep last push out, and that really lifted everyone's spirits for the accent.

With limited room in our shuttle vehicle, I waited in the lot with the packs as the sun set. A ranger came up and talked with me for a bit, and even checked our permit. She mentioned that in 2 weeks she was doing Subway through for her first time, so wanted details of all the conditions we found.

Final assessment. While this canyon is definitely worth doing again, I probably won't be back soon. Das Boot sounds like it adds to the experience, so maybe try for the combo next time?

This is the slightly long, wetter, and more challenging upper start to the traditional Subway hike in Zion. :GB: The hike in starts off just like the Subway hike but it takes a little bit more route finding skills and debating to find the right way for Das Boot, but we made it in the correct drop-in point without much issue. The canyon quickly narrows up and get plenty wet, dark, tight, and cold. : rambo : We were plenty warned about a dead elf at the first rappel and all too soon we could smell that disgusting beast rotting away up ahead. :yuck: But we did our best to ignore the nasty smell and do that first short rappel. Loads more pools & narrows to go thru with an occasional short rappel & awkward down climb & a couple swimmers and all too soon were at that final 30ft rappel. Some places rate this canyon as a 4B but we didn't think this canyon deserved that higher rating or we've just slowly getting better at this... ;)

We lucked out with some walk-in permits for Subway the day before, so we proceeded to finish via this classic barely technical canyon. Some easy creek hiking and we hit that boulder section where I down climb that class 3/4 face down a huge boulder while the guys did a short rappel on the right side of it. This was followed not too shortly by those short swimmers, some more easy creek walking, and another larger swimmer in a tight section of the canyon that starts with a handline/easy rappel. Soon afterwards the canyon narrows up and the walls start soaring into the sky where we down climbed a branch at keyhole holes, soaked into the upper Subway past that photogenic Subway Log, traversed above that 20ft falls and rappeled into the main Subway where we enjoyed a water slide, showered under the falls and stripped down the gear. :D That Subway is the best part of the whole canyon, but afterwards if followed by some sweet red falls/cascades but that soon replaced with 4 miles of kinna boring hiking alongside the creek to that steep & quick exit trail back to the lower TH.

Combined with Subway from the top. The elk is not too smelly yet and Das Boot was nice and cold for being such a hot summer day. The Subway was fantastic! Such an amazing display of geology and water. Everyone should see this at least once in their lifetimes.

I lucked out and got a walk-in permit this weekend and did this gem of a canyon from the top this time by hitching a ride to the Wildcat TH. :D
