A big loop starting at Bear Lake TH. 4:40 am arrival at parking lot since I wasn’t able to get timed entry, but having an early start was kind of nice. Up to Alberta Falls, Mills, the Loch, Glass, and Sky Pond, then over to Haiyaya, Emerald, Dream, Nymph,

Back in the west at Rocky Mountain National Park. The first day of hiking was around Bear Lake, to Loch Lake (The Loch), Lake of Glass, Haiyaha Lake, Dream Lake and return to Bear Lake. Beautiful scenery all along these trails and the Aspen were at Peak color change. There were plenty of others along the trail but not overcrowded. The higher elevation made the hiking a little more difficult but not bad since we were only around 10,000 feet. The weather was ideal and very little snow on the surrounding peaks except on north slopes. Looks like a late arrival for winter this year.

The trails were in good condition as usual in a park that has heavy usage. The trail from the Loch to Glass Lake was a little rockier with a lot of rock steps that made this section a little harder than the rest. I could spend another day or two in this area to hit some of the other trails near Bear Lake. At the time we went the park required reservations to enter the park, this supposedly ends on October 10.

My first time visiting RMNP.Yeah! I parked at the Bear Lake trailhead. I started a little before daylight but would finish my hike here. That way I could still see Bear Lake. I took a connector trail over to Glacier Gorge trail. First stop was Alberta Falls. Cool waterfall. From there I worked my way up to The Loch, Timberline Falls, Lake of Glass and after a little scramble topped out at Sky Pond. I liked this trail along the creek and little meadows. I heard an Elk bugle and saw three of them. Also saw a few Pika's. On my way back down I took a connector trail over to Lake Haiyaha where there is a gnarly tree. After that I connected to Emerald Trail at Dream Lake. Went on up to Emerald Lake and turned around there. I saw one Marmot there. Headed back down this trail back past Dream Lake then Nymph Lake. It has lots of water lilies which is what the lake is named after. From there it was back down to Bear lake and the end of my loopish hike. Although these trails are popular I felt it was a good outing for my first hike in RMNP.I also saw a nice Bull Elk and a few Buck deer on the drive. Very enjoyable morning!

Day 5
Trailhead elevation = 9,475‘ Max experienced elevation = 10,221’
After a Micky D’s breakfast we hit the trail at about sunrise. This was a hike composed of a hike to 2 lakes then a side hike to another. All three were very nice lakes.

Saw a juvenile wild turkey on the trail. Met some very friendly chipmunks along the way.

Merlin headed back to AZ this afternoon.
