It doesn't help that there are so many people going up and down at the same time, and water makes it slippery. After the waterfall ascension, you are at the foot of the Lake of Glass. Head off to the right to climb up a bit of a solid rock bank, and head through a magical scenic wonderland to the final destination of sky pond. The area is full of lush green grass, a babbling brook, and the mountain majesty all around. Sometimes the tail is just stepping stones.
After resting and eating lunch at sky pond, it was back down the same way. Through more lush forests typical of the area. The way back is entirely down. Very many people on the trail, even if you start early in the morning, as we did. Otherwise you risk not getting a spot to park even though the lot at bear lake is huge! There is a closer Trailhead, but it only has about 20 spots which were all full when we drove by at 5a!
Many people on the trail, at sky pond, but even more as you near the trail heads. Alberta falls are a beautiful cascade, but it is the first major site, so there are many people sitting there admiring the scenery.
Definitely a must do hike at RMNP! Just start early so you can hike when it is cooler, and less people are out on the trail!
We took a quick detour down the trail to Mills Lake to look at the falls labeled on the map, but they are not visible from the trail. So after a while, we just turned around and headed back to the trail head.
Lots of water everywhere! |
