Way off trail as there is no trail. Once I found the sinkhole I walked around it three times trying to plan a way down. It was a controlled slide. I kept telling myself it was a bad idea. Once down and out to the canyon my worries about getting out rose. DON'T do this ALONE! Out and knees shaking I made it back to my car.

A week after my Thor's Hammer adventure, I decided to go looking for the Sinkhole pictographs. I parked at Duck-on-a-Rock, and strolled about .75 mile East to the sinkhole, then took the obvious use trail just past it down to the panel. While the panel as a whole isn't as impressive as Thor's, some of the individual paintings are super sharp and clear. Another of my new favorite easy Rim walks.

Before the hike I hit up Hippy for some advice about finding the sinkhole. She assured me it was an easy find. The hard part was convincing my girlfriend that nothing bad would happen to me if I went down in there. She wasn't buying it, so I stayed out. Oh well, the views are just as incredible from above...

Took 9L out to see the sinkhole. The usual walk and "Tour".
Couple trees just south of the sinkhole opening were felled over the opening of the hole. Probably fell in the last big monsoon storm we had in the past few weeks.
We pulled the trees a few feet away so I could climb down but I changed my mind and I let 9L search the way out for the pictographs.

Then we popped over to Shoshone Pt to find the "Ruins" that are supposedly there...

Hippy
Hippy finally got to show me where the sinkhole is. Really cool feature right there on the rim. Short hike, fun little climb down into the sinkhole, and impressive views out into the canyon from the sinkhole "window" below.

The pictographs are in really good shape, though there are some signs of jackholes who have been there. As a reminder, should you ever visit this site (or any others like it) -- it's impressive because it's been there for so long and it's still there. Please don't disturb it so it will be impressive for the people who visit after you too!

Thanks for doing all the legwork Hippy! :)

Took out my coworker Caitlyn and a friend of a friend (Linus) and three east coast tourists I picked up at Desert View...the east coast kids said seeing the sinkhole and pictographs was down right astounding and I showed them the Grandview Lookout Tower and some scattered elk remains, the usual "guided tour" ;)

It's been a while since I "picked up" random tourists and I think I truly enjoy watching their reactions when they see the things I love so much...

In other news as we headed back toward the cars from the sinkhole we reached the parking area and I went into 9L mode and pointed out all the landmarks I know in that area and told them the trails I've been on and stories I've heard of the area...an old man joined our group and said to me when I was finished, "If I didn't know any better I'd say you are in love with the Canyon"

That seems to be the general consensus.
