Black Canyon / Horse Canyon
Last time when I was at the Black Canyon lake Dam, my Delorme showed a road going down the canyon. I didn't see the road on the Garmin or on the HAZ maps, but I figured I would check it out.
I started by Black Canyon Rim campground and headed down the Hangman's trail. Then headed over to the lake and the Rocky Bluff trail. When I got to the dam, I saw a path leading down the canyon.
The path went down the creek and had a ton of dead fall on it. About a 1/2 mile down, there was an road gate in the creek. The Delorme told the truth! There was a road here at one time. The road is now a cow path. The canyon is a cool place. It had awesome rock formations and solitude. It felt like I was in the middle of nowhere, but I was only about a half mile from a major forest road. Eventually there was a fence line and a very old road was on the other side. I went past a couple of fenced in meadows. The old road ended at FR86 and it's behind a locked gate. I'll be back to explore some of the other abandoned roads in the area.
Ruins / Petroglyphs
The other week I met a local that told me about some ruins and petroglyphs near Heber. I did a little bit of research found them off of FR86 near the Black Canyon abandoned road. There's a trail that takes you up some switchbacks to the ruins. It look like some idiots have camped in the ruins and blackened the roof with a campfire.
The petroglyphs are down the road from the ruins. If you know where to look, you can see them from the road. There a short trail that takes you the pics. At first I passed them up and climbed on top of the shelf. There was a different trail on top. I came down and saw the pics. These pics are upside down. It's like a narrow/shallow cave with the pics on the roof. The artist must have laid on their back. I wasn't brave enough to crawl up on my back to get close pics. I'll let the JJ and Joe crew do that. I'm sure it would be nothing for them .
After the petroglyphs I went to the forest boundary to where the original ranger station was till 1949.
I then took FR86 to FR487 to FR300 to the Jeep.
There was an off and on light rain for most on the day. Then at 6 the sun came out, but then it started to rain from 7Pm on. As I walked on the rim road, there was a dense fog. It got so bad that I couldn't see 3 feet in front of me. The fog cleared near the Gentry LO tower.
It was cool to cold day on the rim. It never did warm up, but I didn't notice it as long as I keep moving. |

. I followed the road to the ridge tank and then road disappeared. A foot path started at the tank and became faint (and sometimes disappeared) as it descended into the Black Canyon.
. I saw JJ pull into the Deer Creek TH as headed up the rim .
) and found out that I did when I saw a family of 4 heading up the other way. They set me straight and I found it after walking around some dead fall first.
