I've always enjoyed Pine Mountain in Marin because of the variety of scenery: windswept montane grasslands, a nice forest of bay laurel and Pacific yew, lakeside redwoods, small waterfalls and a lot of the extremely rare Sargent cypress. The Sargent cypress is the star of the show for dendrophiles because the redwoods are nothing special with only a handful of old growth specimens. I also saw plenty of wood rose, a few red and gold columbines and a lot of wildflowers in general in spite of the fact that it's been dry for at least a month and a half. The sheer variety of flora on this hike is stunning.
I was hoping to get some great pictures today, but the 20+ MPH wind combined with the blown out sky made much of the flora unsuitable for photographic portraits so I just concentrated on hiking instead. Very few people (2 solo mountain bikers, a pair of mountain bikers, a pair of hikers and a solo hiker a few hundred yards from the trail head when I was almost done) on the trail today. This trail isn't very popular, but it does have the reputation as being heavy on the mountain bikes. Good to get back in the saddle again. Mount Eddy kicked my butt two weeks ago, but today was easy. |
