Been sick all week but managed to drag myself out for a Meetup ride out of Rio Vista Community Park in Peoria this morning. Pretty much a reverse route from last week's Harem ride.

Meetup ride from Rio Vista Community Park in Peoria on New River and Skunk Creek trails. Rio Vista was BOOMING with activity this morning. I was fortunately to find a parking space.

Having seen photos of and heard about the Wood Duck pair at Rio Vista I hopped on the bus and made a trip hopping to see them for myself. And I was successful! They were a delight to watch. Afterward I checked in on a veteran's event that was getting underway and on some of the other local residents The female Mandarin duck seems to have moved on.

I had not been to Rio Vista in a while and since it was such a beautiful day a trip out was in order. I walked around the lake then strolled down the New River Trail for a bit to stretch my legs some. A nice sunny day with a beautiful blue sky, nothing better.

Driving back from my wife's doctors appointment on Thursday I noticed some color in Skunk Creek at Thunderbird Rd. So this morning after work I drove over to Rio Vista Park Enjoyed some nice Fall color in the park and in Skunk Creek itself. Nothing notable in duckland.

Short after work jog starting from Rio Vista Park. This time I headed north, went over the bridge and continued in a northward direction. About .5 miles from the bridge the trail (paved sidewalk) split. One headed west, the other crossed another bridge and continued north. I took the west path for about .7 miles to where it ended at 91st Ave. This .7 mile segment was named the Greenway Channel Trail. Turned around at that point and returned to the split in the trail and crossed the bridge and continued north. Went down to the Bell Road underpass and turned around. From here I jogged back to the Rio Vista TH. These "trails" are all paved so they are not much fun, but they are awfully convenient! 115 again today, but there was a good breeze, so it didn't seem quite that bad.

After work jog. Started from Rio Vista Park "trail head" and went southwest this time. I've decided to make it a monthly chore to keep exploring this "trail system". Today, I basically did a short loop that took me from the Rio Vista Park to just before where Grand Ave (the 60) crosses the canal. Started on the east of the canal and looped back on the west side. As I did this, I realized that these were two different "trails." (I keep putting trails in quotations because I have a hard time calling these trails as they really just paved paths). That being said, there are trail markers along these paths. The one on the east side of the canal refers to itself as New River East Trail and the path on the west side of the canal is marked as the New River Trail. Besides being on opposite sides of the canal these "trails" follow the same course until the bridge at Rio Vista Park. That's where the New River Trail heads north and the New River East Trail turns toward the east. The length of my westward jog was shortened slightly by water. The water was still flowing fairly well from last nights monsoon and was flowing over the paved path where I turned around. Wildlife was up exciting but fairly abundant. Saw quite a few squirrels and quail, as well as chipmunks, rabbits and a roadrunner.

This "trail" is in HAZ so I figured why. Very urban, even for HAZ. That being said, it is designated as a trail and it very convenient for an after work jog. I only had a limited amount of time to work with so I only did a very small section and it looks as if this "trail" stretches on in either direction for quite a ways. Started from the Rio Vista Community Center and headed NE up to the 75th Ave. underpass, where I turned around. This entire trail is paved which is hard on my knees so I jogged on the dirt/gravel side whenever I could. There is a short stretch - under the 101 Loop - where there is water flowing and a decent amount of greenery. The rest of this segment is very exposed and cityesque. Not pretty, but not a bad place if you are just trying to get some miles in. Saw a couple of squirrels and a chipmunk. I can see myself exploring this system in the future when I'm pressed for time.
