Two easy loops that involved lakes, rivers, and many, many birds.

Hassayampa River Preserve

We arrived around 1450, and were told that the trails closed at 1530. Since we were already there, we decided to pay the $10 and check it out. We walked along the Mesquite Meander Trail to the Palm Lake Loop to the Willow Walkway, then looped back to the start. The trail was wide and flat with a lot of green and thousands of chirping birds. The river was 2 inches deep max, and the lake was covered with algae, so those were disappointing, but there were some thick green areas with Jurassic Park vibes, and the constant bird chirping was fascinating. We couldn't get any decent pictures of the birds, but recorded some videos with the omnipresent chirping. We only saw 3 other people. Total 1.46 miles.

Dead Horse Ranch State Park

Nice easy walk. Very relaxing. Beautiful riparian area. Thousands of chirping birds. The trail is very wide, flat, well maintained, and easy to follow. There are 3-4 stretches with deep sand, which felt nice but was a little slower going. The river was pretty stagnant looking, but people were swimming, floating, and fishing in it. The lagoons were beautiful, and full of birds. There were a number of people fishing, eating, bicycling, and hanging out, but there were also some quieter peaceful spots. We were told that there were some nesting eagles but didn't see them. There were numerous side trails, so we added an extra loop which had nice views. We saw a huge skunk, the first one I've seen in AZ, but it trotted into the brush before I could get a picture. Overall very peaceful and relaxing, with an impressive number of birds. Total 3.59 miles.

Had the opportunity to spend a few days at DEHO for an excellent training course by a team from the University of Denver's business school.
It was nice to be back in the Verde Valley, and I had almost forgotten what a nice park it is ... much bigger, greener and wilder than mine.
Only had time for one short hike after we wrapped on Tuesday - saw some birds, deer, and a nice sunset. Got back to my truck at the same time as one other guy from central office who also took a hike ... and we soon found we were locked in the day-use area by a gate that they close at 6pm. 🤣 We had to go find the Ranger residence to get out.
Including a few photos of our final activity - building a boat out of cardboard and garbage bags in 40 minutes, and racing it 50 yards ... my team killed it! 😁
The whole thing was actually really great, and I'm looking forward to the next two-day session in November.

4 day / 3 night road trip with Jayden.

Day 1 - From Safford drove up to Roosevelt Lake and set up camp at Cholla CG.
Sightseeing, hiking, swimming, fishing, late night music, conversation & laughs.
Relaxing mellow first day.

Day 2 - Drove up to Tonto Natural Bridge and did the hike down & back.
Always a cool sight, but lots of people on this day so it was a quick visit.
Then off to Cottonwood for a 2 night camp stay at Dead Horse Ranch.
First some park hiking, followed by an evening of walking, shopping & dinner in Cottonwood.
Early bed (for us) at midnight to get rested for Sedona the next day.

Day 3 - Drove up to Sedona and first hiked West Fork.
Then back down to town for a tourist walk down main street and a new tattoo for Jayden.
Cathedral Rock was the evening hike followed by a nice dinner back in town before the drive back to Dead Horse Ranch.

Day 4 - Broke down our 2 day home and drove up to Jerome starting with a visit to Jerome State Historic Park.
Then walked the switchbacks up Jerome to the Haunted Hamburger for lunch followed by some shopping.
Then the sad part of the road trip - time to drive back home :(

Wonderful trip with an awesome friend!
Thank You Jay ...
:D

Mid-week get away, I wanted to try some place I've never been so I decided on Dead Horse Ranch State Park. Pretty nice place. I did a little hiking around down by the river and around the Lagoons. Pretty easy going in that part of the park, not much elevation change down there. The trails around the river are mostly sand, plenty of spots to stop along the river. I would like to go back and check out the upper areas of the park.

I was staying in the Dead Horse Ranch State Park campground Quail loop. Jumped on Quail trail to Lime Kiln trail. Followed that up to the Thumper trail intersect then turned back. Took the side trip to Rattlesnake Canyon overlook and finally diverted down to the lagoons and Fume trail back to the campground.

Thumper Loop is another hike in the Boots and Burgers book. The hike is in the Dead Horse State Park. It makes a loop out of sections of Lime Kiln, Thumper , and Lower Raptor Trail. Haz doesn't have all of these trails listed yet. They are in the Dead Horse Trail System. The trails on this loop are hiker and mountain biker friendly. Maybe a couple rough spots for a beginner mountain biker like me but would be easy enough to walk that part. a nice variety of vegetation. Some grassy fields, Cresote fields, lots of Prickly Pear, Juniper, and Crucifix. My first time in this exact area and it seems the possibilities of lots of little adventures are good.
Camping, fishing, HIKING, mountain biking, and Cottonwood, Clarkedale, Jerome, Sedona all close by. Heck, the Lime Kiln Trail can take you all the way to Sedona :o . Nice morning hike with a cool breeze :D .
The book suggested Verde Lea Market for lunch. The Torta was very tasty! Another nice outing from the Boots and Burgers book. :y:

We walked from the Quail Loop campground down Dead Horse Ranch Rd to pick up the trail. It started to rain while we were checking out the Lime Kiln. I completely missed the sign to the kiln, but luckily my husband was more observant than me. We put our rain jackets on and kept heading up the trail. We checked out the Rattlesnake Wash Overlook spur. We intended to hike the Thumper Loop, but when we got to the Thumper Trail, the rain storm was growing darker and appeared we'd get heavier rains. We turned around to head back to camp.

Afternoon hike around the park.
We took the Verde River Greenway Trail from our cabin along the river, then the Forest loop Trail to the park entrance. Walked the main park road back and around the lagoons and on back to our cabin.
Very nice park & trails!

Started out the day with a round of disc golf at Cottonwood's Riverfront Park. The park is a gem! They have really nice baseball fields, batting cages, soccer fields, a hockey/roller derby rink, dog park, skate park, and the disc golf course ... bravo, Cottonwood!
I like disc golf so much for a couple different reasons - first, it is a fun outdoor activity by myself or with friends - and second, it is basically a nice long nature walk with a little something extra to do along the way ... the nature aspect is especially highlighted on this course due to it's location running through the riparian zone between the park and the river.
The disc golf course is well layed out and super fun to play. There are a few wide open, let'er rip type holes, but most of the holes involve threading your disc between plenty of trees - or in my case, bouncing my disc off the trees. I played all 18 holes, but I threw two discs at each, so my arm played 36 holes - probably be sore tomorrow.
Hole number 8 passes closest to the river, and the sweet sound of running water lured me away from my game for a while. I walked along the water and got to watch a cormorant dive for, catch, and swallow a fish that seemed absurdly large for him. He seemed justifiably proud of his catch ... then went and sat on a tree stump to rest and digest. Also saw a red-tailed hawk in one of the large trees on the course, as well as hummingbirds, doves, woodpeckers, and a lizard.
Next I went next door to Dead Horse State Park and strolled along the river from there. I came upon an area where beavers have been busy. I hear that there are otters in the area too - can't wait to see them! 10 minutes later I noticed that my sunglasses were missing, and began to retrace my steps without much hope of actually finding them - but I did!
When I got back to my car, I noticed a very large bird in a very tall tree - thought "turkey vulture" - but when I got out the binoculars ... lo and behold, bald eagle baby! :y:
Pretty fine day off. I like this area a lot, and once I get my housing situation worked out and get a decent place of my own, I think I will be very happy here! The way I anticipate things going is, I will be working and living in Camp Verde, but spending a lot of time playing in Cottonwood.

Stayed in the cabins - Cabin #4, Deer - and had a great time! The cabins are cozy, with beds, table and chairs, dresser, lights, ceiling fan, heater, picnic table and fire ring and barbeque outside ... the cabin area has it's own bathrooms with showers.
Fishing in the lagoons sucked - they are very shallow, with lots of weeds to get tangled up in. We enjoyed fishing the Verde River more - my friend pulled a good sized largemouth bass out of there, and I just missed missed hooking a few good bites.
Ate at the Red Rooster Cafe - good breakfast/lunch, and the Schoolhouse Restaurant - fairly pricey, but amazing food.

After a full day of Jerome, National Monuments & State Parks I was beat and ready to settle in at my last destination of the day. This was my first visit to Dead Horse and where I had a cabin waiting for me. I checked in, unloaded my stuff and then spent the rest of the evening exploring the park. I first looped the lagoons, found a nice place along the Verde river for a swim and then checked out the first mile of the Lime Kiln Trail. Returned back to my cabin just after sunset, ate dinner and then spent about an hour photographing the night skies before turning in for the night and ending a wonderful day #2 of my road trip!

Dead Horse Ranch SP was nice. I didn't have enough time to see the entire park or hike all the trails, but what I did see was enough to convince me that it's worthy of another future visit & stay.
