My annual March trip out to Ash Peak in Greenlee County.
This area is my poppy honey hole ... No honey in the hole this year, just a few here and there. Not sure if more will come later or not at all, my guess is not. That's OK because this whole area is pretty cool! I visited the big silver mine with side trips to all the other small mines I know about. Then finished off with some rock hounding for which this place is "famous" for. Filled both my cargo pockets with lots of geodes, tightened my belt one hole and hiked back out to the hwy.
Made a 1 hour stop on the way home for the short hike out to the Wright marker. Back in the late 1800's Indians stole some horses, Lorenzo & Seth went tracking and got killed in an ambush. Good old AZ Cowboy & Indian history.
While out there, I saw my 2nd Gila monster of the week.
Fun afternoon

My 2nd trip out across the desert floor to visit the ambush site/marker.
After arriving at the ambush site, I then took a couple old cattle tank roads along with some off-trailing northeast along North Headquarters wash and up into the southern Black Hills. Didn't go to far in as the sun was starting on it's way down, but I saw many things that will have me coming back for some more of this very cool looking area! The markers again I found interesting (I love local history) and the always scenic Black Hills made this an excellent late March trip!
(it's March out here ..... I saw a poppy)

This roadside historic marker is located half way between Safford and Duncan along US 70.

The inscription on the stone marker reads -

'In memory of 2 of many pioneers who brought law, order & safety to the Gila Valley. Lorenzo & Seth Wright were killed 1 mile north of this spot by Indians who had stolen 45 horses from early settlers. While pursuing the Indians they were ambushed December 1, 1885.'

I have stopped a few times over the years and read this always wanting to return someday and hike the mile north to the ambush site. Well someday was today, I set out across the desert along the old dirt road quickly (.80 miles) coming upon the stone ambush marker with both names on it. From the marker, I then set out off-trailing across the open desert of the southeastern Black Hills up to and around the Twin Knolls area before hooking back up with another old road and taking it back to complete a lasso loop.

Old Gila Valley history and the always scenic Black Hills made for an excellent afternoon!
