Finishing off more trails in the far western part of Tucson district of SNP. I thought the sand might be tamped down a little from the rain - it was not

Big route out in the foothills of SNP west. Started at Golden Gate TH and took that to Encinas trail at the Ez-Kim-In-Zin picnic area. Encinas out to the Cactus Wren/Manville Loop with a trip up Signal Hill. First time on some of these trails so it was nice to scratch them off the list. Nice cool, sunny and overall pleasant day.

A quick visit to Saguaro National Park West after hunting cactus blooms in other areas near the Old Pueblo. A little exploring the area after visiting the hill top to see the petroglyphs. This is an amazing spot for sunrise or sunset. Not as much fun at 4:30pm at 100+ degrees.....ha ha

I don't think I have ever seen this place so green. Tucson has been getting some serious rain lately.

After the Brown Mountain hike, I drove over to the Signal Hill Picnic Area in Saguaro National Park West. Believe it or not I had never been there, so this was an overdue treat. Classic old CCC construction like the others in the area, with the added bonus of some really nice petroglyphs. :D It turned out to be a pretty good day!

Nice early morning hike in the Tucson Mountains, Saguaro National Park West. It is starting to feel like fall. Started this hike at the Manville Road access point and headed south on the Manville Trail to Signal Hill. This southern part of the Manville Trail is about .7 miles of walking up a sandy wash, the sand was not well packed so made the walking a little more challenging but not difficult. The Ironwood trees along this side of the park are a bit larger than I've seen in other parts of the park. At Signal Hill Picnic ground I followed the road to Golden Gate road and the trail head for the Wild Dog Trail. The Wild Dog Trail is a short .9 miles to the Valley View Overlook Trail and Bajada Wash and transitions from the lower desert floor to the Tucson Mountain lower hills. There are some mediocre views to the North from the ridge on this trail just prior to trail end at Bajada Wash. I saw one Rattlesnake along this trail and it was was a little more active than others I have seen on previous hikes. Rattled at me as I approached and appeared to move toward me such that I backed up a bit. I thought this odd behavior but in actuality it was moving off to the side of the trail heading for some brush that just happened to be sort of in my direction. Got a couple of pictures but since it was moving and the light was low they were not the best. I liked the way it moved toward its destination while all along keeping it's head cocked in my direction, guess it didn't trust me (don't know why I'm a pretty trusting guy). From Bajada Wash I headed back to Signal hill and took a short break at the Picnic grounds and a visit to the Hohokum Rock art on Signal Hill. Nice close up view to the north of Twin Peaks. The trip along the Cactus Wren and Return on the Manville Trail was rather mundane, just a lot of flat desert walking. The trail crosses many small desert washes that are coming down off the bajada. I did notice some odd looking marks on one section of the trail, parallel "s"shaped lines about 12 inches long and separated by about 12 inches. I assumed these were Sidewinder Rattlesnake tracks. I don't recall ever seeing a sidewinder in Arizona (have seen them in the Mojave) but they are here and they love the sandy desert floors. Also saw numerous round imprints in the sand left by coiled rattlesnakes from probably the night before. Overall a good hike. I was able to do 8 miles today and felt pretty good so what ever was kicking my butt for the last two weeks seems to be passing. I hope my doctor isn't a HAZ member because I told her I would keep my hiking down to under 4 miles for a couple of weeks. I figured I did 4 miles, then of coarse I have to head back.

After camping in Catalina State Park, we drove over to Saguaro National Park. We hiked the first mile of Hugh Norris then looked at the petroglphs at Signal Hill.

Did a nice loop from Ez-Kim-in-Zin parking lot...I did all of Encinas, then hiked the 0.4 mi back to Cactus Wren and took it south to Signal Hill. From Signal Hill I followed the road out of that picnic area to the Wild Dog Trail. I took Wild Dog to the end, then did Valley View real quick and back, then picked up Bajada Wash heading south to Hohokam Road, where I crossed the road to pick up the west end of Hugh Norris. I took Hugh Norris to Sendero Esparanza going north to return to Ez-Kim-in-Zin parking lot.

Encinas was part wash and part old road, a slight decline down to Cactus Wren. The others were ok also...the better trail was Hugh Norris for sure. Nice views. It incidentally was the real trail with any notable elevation (though Sendero Esparanza was a quick drop of elevation from the ridgeline that Hugh Norris started off as and continued as, on the way to Amole & Wasson Peaks).

Nice, easy hike through the desert. Not ideal with the road noise off of Sandario, but a beautiful, large grove of saguaros here with nice backdrop views of Panther/Safford peaks, PIcacho, and the Catalinas. The petroglyphs here were especially nice.

Good times in the Tucson mountains. Hiked the Sendero Esperanza trail on up to Wasson peak, made it up in 1:10 with no stops. Quick stop up at the peak for the views, hazy day so not as good as usual. I scrambled up Amole Peak on the way back to check out the big white antenna that I could see the whole ridgeline. Nothing too exciting...Lots of good bloom out here right now, Desert Lavender (Hyptis emoryi), Desert Marigold (Baileya multiradiata) and Bahia (Bahia absinthifolia) all in great color, especially on the southern slopes. Even saw some nice Desert Zinnia (Zinnia acerosa) tucked in here and there that were blooming nicely. After finishing up the hike, I made a quick side trip to Signal Hill on my way to Sanderio Road. Definitely some impressive petroglyphs, worth a trip if you are in the area.

I flew back to Tucson to visit family and friends and couldn't leave without making a night trip out to the petroglyphs. I parked outside of the park boundary and hiked in along the Manville Trail.

I spent about an hour on top of the hill photographing the stars over the petroglyphs, then returned back to my truck. On the hike out I was treated to a pack of coyotes howling in the distance.

After my first visit to Signal Hill a couple of months ago I wanted to return and photograph the petroglyphs with the night sky. I parked at Manville & Sandario Rd and hiked into the park at about 12:30am. I spent about 45 minutes photographing the petroglyphs before I received a call from a Sheriffs Deputy asking if I knew where my vehicle was. Since I had left it along the side of the rd in a UDA/drug smuggling area- BP & PCSD stopped out with my truck. Whoops!

This was a last minute trip to find a location suitably dark enough for photographing the Milky Way. The timing was good with the monsoon taking a break and the moonless night. I didn't hike up to the hill but instead walked throughout the area looking for decent foregrounds. Got a wake-up call around 1:00am when I almost stepped on a resting Dback. He too was light painted and photographed...nothing is safe during sleep deprived photo experiments!

I originally planned on going to Tanque Verde Falls with my cousin, but he couldn't make the trip out there. I've been to Signal Hill (last summer) and I thought it would be cool to try my astrophotography with a petroglyph in the foreground. When I was there last summer, I drove through the Tucson Mountains and thought they were interesting. I on explored the mountains a little bit and took a shot at sunset, and went to Signal Hill. Not the most exciting hike ever, but it's nice to get back into the desert, since I've been doing so much creek related hiking lately.

Took the family out to do a couple of short hikes in to scenic spots. Great weather for hiking in the saguaro forest.
