Ascended Humphreys via the Dutchman glades and west ridge then crossed to Agassiz along the ridge and descended to treeline near the Snowbowl lift. We then crossed south of the ski resort descending though the forest and popped out at the Kachina trail trailhead.

Trailhead up to Humphreys and down to the weatherford trail junction was easy going. The trail junction to the final push up Agassiz was a bit of a slog. We had to take on/off snowshoes to cross scree fields interlaced with deep snow. Agassiz was a little icy and steep towards the top but crampons were not necessary (though they could be nice in worse conditions).

Beautiful conditions in the morning though snow got a little slushy towards the end of the day.
Partner got bad altitude sickness - coming up from Tucson with limited acclimatization you can feel it.

A nearly perfect day - Big snowfields with a B-24 wreak, a chance to legally summit AZ's 2nd tallest mountain, and sweeping views of the grand canyon from volcanic alpine tundra!

No one else seemed interested in hiking this and the snow was about as good as it gets from reported totals. I figured with it being more than 2 years since a winter snowshoe hike, I would go for it. Still got it.

The snow is pretty good, but there has been a lot of traffic, mostly ski and board. What can I say? I've done this a lot, it certainly isn't rare or new, just something I enjoy doing from time to time. The cold wind definitely presents the biggest challenge for me. Not just my face from the wind on the ridge top, but my chest from hiking up in the cold dry air. It makes it interesting and different, however. No crowded summits!

Clouds gave way to sun, and it was really nice overall. I was up and down in a respectable way, just 90 minutes down. Crampons sped up descent from the summit to the bomber wreck. I remembered to bring those from last time.

First hike of Autumn, done entirely in the last hours of summer, concluding about 40 minutes before the sun's vertical rays crossed the equator! It sure looked and felt like fall, either way. There was still some humidity or haze, probably from the storm last week, limiting visibility, but it was nice. I guess true fall conditions would be dry with long range visibility up.

Being a Saturday, fall or summer crowds were out on the mountain, and the summit was too busy for my taste. I got use to those alone on Humphrey mid-week summits, this year. That just meant I cut visit #110 short and opted for solitude and nature time at the spring, which was flowing nicely. The collection box was dry, but just up slope you'll find the real spring, which may be frozen in a few weeks.

My route was basically a reverse of Joe's June of 2013 GPS route and hike, but I cut some fat by hiking my winter route past where the trail meets the Dutchman, and went through the bomber wreck, then I cut some more fat by going through some meadow to meet the AZT further south. I cute 2.5 miles, which felt right. I moved a lot slower than I thought I would going down, primarily due to me repeatedly losing the social or game trail, and having to cross tons of down trees. This just meant I got to listen to more nuthatches and chickadees, which was nice. This was fine, as I took my excercise going up, where I was pleased.

I came up from Phoenix to hike this trail in the winter with a friend from Flagstaff. The hike was a blast, but I was feeling the effects of the elevation change. Snowbowl was open, but there was minimal snowpack on the route. The slope before the crash site still had a lot of rocks sticking out and navigating with snowshoes was difficult. We ended up turning back about half way up because I twisted my knee and we had a late 10am start.

It was the first winter hike for both of us, and I'm glad we decided to turn back. Next time, I'll bring fewer layers, better gloves, and try to lighten my pack weight.

I'll be back when there's more snow and get an earlier start! Great hike, but don't underestimate it!

Great time on the mountain, snowshoeing with a friend from flagstaff. Our goal was the Humphrey's Ridgeline. My friend was feeling some elevation effects and the weather was getting bad, so we turned back around 12,000ft. Still an awesome hike with the recent snow storm that provided 8" of fresh powder two days ago. It was wind-packed and in excellent condition by Saturday morning.

I left Phoenix at 2:30a.m. and got to Snowbowl in record time. We left the parking area at 5:35a.m., just in time to catch an amazing sunrise. We were back at the lodge for an après–ski by 11:30
I'm looking forward to my next time on the Peaks in snow.

It couldn't have been better! Despite the parking issues and Snowbowl basically overflowing, and having to delay by a day due to what I consider to be extreme winds, the snow is the best it has been in years. Probably, the best snow since 2010! Deep, and in very good shape, right now. It was still windy, but I planned for that. Long distance views were also up there, but clouds in Utah kept clarity on the Henry's, Pine Valleys, and Navajo Mountain a little low. The Mazatzals, Whites, Hualapais, and on, were all very good.

It was still rather windy, and the strong NE wind forced me towards the south side of the ridge, but coming down it was mostly at my back, so I took the cornice, which is harder to use to descend than I remember. At least with my snowshoes, as I didn't carry my crampons which might have been useful. I found it pretty windy on the ridge, and very much so on the summit, but there were nice protected areas where I found calm conditions.

I was also pretty pleased that I found up hill travel easier than I thought it would be, even with the dry cold air. Including my 15 minutes or so for lunch, it was right on 4 hours from my car to the summit. 30 minutes on top, and 2 hours down, as well. Wind scour has kept the snow dense and hard in a lot of exposed areas, but in the trees it yielded and was pleasant to go down through. Still, no powder day, but the snow stopped 4 days ago. However, that density was why it was easier to go up.

All in all, a very good day out on the Peaks on this old favorite, and Humphrey.

As a recent resident of Flag, I hiked the Humphries Summit trail in the spring, summer and autumn. I've been wanting to do the winter summit for some time now, and MLK day was projected to be excellent weather. My sister and I were on our way back from Utah and we were able to begin the snowshoe ascent around 9 a.m. The Agassiz and the ridge-line were clearly visible when we left the Snowbowl parking lot. After 2.5 miles, it became clear that the dense fog (cloud) that covered us above 10,800ft was here to stay. It began snowing at 10900ft. The fresh layer of snow that fell overnight began sliding out from underneath my feet at 11,400. We decided to turn around above 11,600ft. It was a tough call, but we knew would not be able to see a thing from the ridgeline, let alone the summit, if we continued. Plus the sliding surface snow was freaking me out a bit. Another time!

Thanks to Jim for the route for this one. :D

Went up the standard way until just above the plane crash site. Traversed north across the large East-West Gully that comes off the last false summit and climbed the well packed snow on the side of the gully. The snow coverage is pretty poor up there considering its March in a strong El Nino year. The dutchman remains climbable but was nasty soft coming down and lots of rocks above the tree line. Crampons were helpful...I left the snow shoes in the car and didn't regret it. Snow in the forecast this week! fingers crossed...

Just like old times, but not quite. It has been nearly 5 years since I last did this route, and it has been 4 years since I last snowshoed in alpine conditions in the San Juan Mountains. I am no longer used to the cold. Heat is more fun, anyway. Cold was the hardest part, as it made my time above tree line something I have zero desire to repeat anytime soon. It really wasn't bad for wind, but this was not a mild winter day, either. I think it was in the single digits on the summit, perhaps so for my entire time above treeline. I conclude this based on how it felt breathing in and how my nose hair felt (from how it felt when the air was below 10 when I lived here) and how quickly my hands stopped working after going numb when I took my gloves off, in the relatively gentle wind.

My 95th summit was pretty good as the air was clean, dry, and long distance views were fantastic. The usual objects of my affection were observed, with the Pine Valley Mountains, Paria, Echo, and Vermilion Cliffs looking good. Navajo MT, Black Mesa, and the Henry Mountains rounded out the north views, with the Whites, Matazals, and Sedona monuments to the south. Once again, it was super cold, so I didn't stay long for me, just 20 minutes. Did I really do this often in these conditions? I might have liked to stay, to enjoy later day sun, and long shadows on the features to the north, but I was cold!

Down is always easier than up, and the 4 and 1/2 hours of total time up, including 15 minutes for lunch, was only 2 hours and 10 minutes or so down. The snow is not what I think it should be with Snowbowl reporting a 32 inch storm total. I was left asking, "where is it?". Above treeline, the winds have scoured most snow away in places, as is normal, but below it was pretty thin. Drifts left some areas in the mid-11,000' range with some depth, but so often there was nothing there. That can be normal. However, in the trees and Dutchman, a foot was often optimistic for the new depth. I found that more often than not, I was not plowing through deep powder, but breaking through a fairly modest depth and having the crampon on my snowshoe bite into the crusted layer underneath. Also, there are a decent number of rocks protruding in the Dutchman. Skiers have been out in droves, too, so a powder experience, this was not. This is not to say it was a bad day, I just had high hopes with the 32 inch report, and I felt my descent was more enjoyable back in November, of all times.

I did enjoy this, but with much of my gear worn out completely or wearing out, the distance to hike this, and the COLD involved yesterday, I prefer to hike it in summer conditions, except for the crowds and the distance views. I will definitely NOT being repeating things like my February 2011 Whitney hike, or my overnight at Black Bear Pass in January of 2012. Maybe a hike up Camelback when it is 114? Oh, I did that, and it was easier to handle (at times)!

Started off on the humphreys trail from snowbowl to the first switchback past the registry. From there pretty much headed straight uphill (east) to the summit ridge around 12200. The ridge had a huge cornice that was overhanging in spots...reports are that it slid later that day. The summit was cold and windy. The sign was buried...I dug for 10 minutes but couldn't find it and was too cold to stay longer. Descended straight through the forest back to snowbowl ...great snow conditions below the tree line

After hearing about the first snow in Flagstaff a few weeks ago I just had to head over to the Hiking Shack rent some snowshoes, pack up my day pack and head up! Baily and I headed north late saturday evening, stayed at my buddy's place and the next morning woke up bright and early and made our way up to the Snowbowl were we started making our way up the trail at a little past 9AM. The day was beautiful, someone had already broke trail for us, which made snowshoeing a lot easier, some three hours later we made it up the ridgeline and in no time we were at the summit by ourselves. It was rather windy and cold up there, and only stayed there about 10 minutes before coming back down. On our way down we decided to take the normal trail down thus completing a loop. Always a sweet day up in Flag!

My goal for the day was to just have fun and attempt snowshoeing for the first time.

Chatting with a guy and his dog in the parking lot, he told us he had snowshoed the week prior. He said there would be enough snow to go up Dutchman Glade, or we could use our micro spikes and go up the main trail, which is what he was doing.

Following Jim H's track, we learned, you could go up under the chairlift and then cut into the Summit Trail right at the sign in box. We had always gone in lower, by the wilderness sign. We signed in and then put on our spikes. We quickly arrived at the first switchback and headed out to the Glade. We put on the snowshoes and the fun began.

We followed footprints up, must be BobP and OdinWiski prints! My "fun" quickly turned to just trying to make two miles. Wow, that is work! Before the Bomber crash, another snowshoer came in off the main trail. We got past the Bomber and I was really slowing us down. I told Karl, that I was not planning on making the summit, but I knew he was not going to leave with unfinished business. I sent him on ahead. I made it to just above treeline. I watched the other snowshoer go across the ridgeline, then the guy and his dog from the parking lot and then there was Karl gaining on them.

The wind was getting to be too much, so I headed back into the trees and found a sunny spot. I sat and sunned and read and it wasn't long until Karl was back. We had a nice break with wine and cheese. It really was a beautiful spot.

I came down in my spikes, but Karl used the snowshoes. We went into the Humphrey's trail just below the Bomber Crash and followed the trail down, both of us in our spikes.

This was our first real snow hike and first time using snowshoes and what better place than Humphrey's to try it out. Perfect weather for the summit ascent with bright sunny conditions and minimal wind. We started on the ski run heading on Jim H's route from GPS. No skiers out yet as the lift would not be open for over an hour so we continued to the spot where the route connects up with the sign in register. Then on the trail for short distance until we reached bottom of the Dutchman Glade route. From here it's straight up slope to the crash site. Made our way through the crash site and shortly after that started to hit the tree line. The last 500 feet is open and snow started to get patchy so at this point it was micro spikes to the ridgeline. Once on the ridgeline it's only about 1/2 mile to the summit. Again only patchy snow with very little post hole conditions so relatively easy walk up. Very nice on the summit....surprised to find not much wind with only slight breeze. After enjoying the views continued down the ridgeline back to top of the Dutchman Glade route. Even though there was little wind on the summit the ridgeline was a different story. Pretty cold so hiked quickly to get down off the ridgeline and down to treeline. Amazing the difference just 500 feet below the ridgeline with very little wind so we stopped and had some wine, cheese and crackers from the our perch. After the break we headed back down the route and out the ski run. Awesome day on the mountain!

I was planning on going solo and Bob said he might be able to join and asked me to text him at 5:30am. When I did at 60 miles to Flag at 5:30, he was just a mile or two behind me. Nice! The weather could not have been nicer. No wind! This was my first time doing it and Bob is a veteran and champ! We both brought snowshoes, which in certain sections probably would've been a little more suitable. But we didn't bother to switch back and forth and just microspiked and cramponed all the way up and down.

We had to balance paw protection and traction for Wiski so we didn't put her booties on until we were close to the summit. Someone can steal my idea of designing a dog bootie with microspikes or crampons on! :) The dog we met on the way up had a torn toe nail or pad that was bleeding pretty bad.

The view on the summit was absolutely beautiful with clear winter air and no wind. A group of 5, two groups of 2, and a solo hiker came up. We probably hung out on the summit for over an hour. Most, if not all of them, took the summer trail back down. We came down the way we went up.

Bob is awesome! He was very considerate of a physical condition I have and set the pace accordingly. All in all, it was a great hike with great weather, scenery, terrains, and company! Wiski made a new friend too. She was ready to go home with Bob :)

Here is a video of one of my partners :y: https://youtube.com ... LPwc ...the other one was pretty cool also.

I met Vince and Wiski at lot 8 and the excuses started flying. We tried to one up our lack of sleep and who had more internal organs harvested and etc. It was a great day at a relaxed pace and the weather was (in my best Marlon Brandon voice) STELLA. The lack of snow would allow someone to boot up to the peak but I donned microspikes and Vince had crampons. We both carried snowshoes as extra training weight for our heavy packs. My trail runners with scuba sock and wool sock worked great as always. I just needed to change socks a few times for sweaty feet.

The summit was void of people and then a fun group of 5 came up and then another 2. We also saw a guy with a dog and the girl dogs got along pretty well. If there were a problem, I'd place all my money on Wiski. She'd put Bruno in his place, although so does Daisy :) .

Fun day...nice meeting Vince and Wiski. Look forward to more hikes with my new 101st HAZ partner. Kiltlifter was a good finish.

While waiting for Vince and Wiski, I was able to fix someone's car. She said her battery was dead. I had a battery booster with me but the problem was just a loose battery cable. The lady was very appreciative.

This past weekend was meant to be enjoyed in the snow!.....and thats what we did! Our original plan was to make it an early start, summit and return back to Phoenix at a decent time but the need to wait til 9AM to get our permits changed all that. We drove early saturday morning and was at the Agazziz lodge past 9AM after getting all our gear ready in the parking lot. There was a ton of people hitting the slopes this morning and we seemed to be the only ones there that werent using the snowbowl. By the time we were trail ready was already 1030, the summit was covered in a mass of thick clouds that was dropping some decent snow at 9500+ feet. The first part of the trail was easy to follow up until the rock slide switchback. From there we started making our way up the steep slide under some nice snowfall, at this point we were blazing our own snow trail, at times knee high deep which made the climb slow and treachorous but enjoyable. After a while we reached the B-24 bomber site, it was half buried in snow, took a few photos, some (3) decided that was enough for them, the others (4) we decided to keep going up until our preset turn around time of 230PM. After all was said and done we had reached the treeline at around 11,600 ft. the snowfall was becoming heavier and didnt want to spend a couple more hours trying to reach the summit in really deep snow. We turned around and made it back in town later that night. Since we all have our permits we will be taking another crack at it in the next few weeks as it was super fun to be around all the snow and the steep slopes!

Snowshoeing is hard!! No joke.

After picking up permits at Agassiz Lodge we started hiking (snowshoeing) regular Humphrey's trail from Snow Bowl. After reaching the rock fall we started hiking straight up. Knee deep snow, we had to make our own trail up which was slowing us down. It was also snowing the whole time going up.
After little while our route took us to the old bomber wreck which was pretty cool.
We continued further up but were forced to turned around after 2pm. We had a pretty late start and felt like we still have lots of elevation and didnt want to risk going down in dark. Also, most of our fellow hiker turned around already. We followed our trail down and got back early at 4pm.
We are definitely going back, now when we have permits, we can get an early start and push for the summit if the weather allows.

Finally a day without howling winds over the peaks. Still pretty decent conditions, good snow cover up to the ridgeline, then mixed snow/rock to the summit. A dozen or more people on the route today.

Background....I carb loaded bigtime on Super Sunday.... I had an assortment of Marzen,Czech Style Pilsner,Maibock, and had red wine with a great dinner I cooked...steak...baked potatoes...made a caesar salad with extra bacon. Dessert pie from a box. Pre-dinner my wife made nachos and little hotdog things. She's a 49ers fan so she didn't want to cook.

Alarm went off at 330...out the door by 4 with very little sleep. I just threw everything together but didn't really organize. Killed a couple of pepsi's on the ride and drank a liter of water. I saw a huge Bull elk and shortly after that my tire met a bunny :( . There was a light dusting of snow on the road up. I reached the parking area and took about 40 minutes to get ready. In the meantime, a girl and her 2 dogs showed up. We talked for a few minutes and off she went skinning.

The snowshoe started off fine but then I got that feeling and headed back down. I ate some food and drank some water and decided to wait it out for 15 minutes. My pack was lighter but I'm still in training mode so I had about 35 pounds. I had gone up about a mile and gained close to 1,000-1,200ft before I turned back. Its wierd I've never had problems above 11k all the way to 14,400 in CO but sometimes I have issues between 8-10k. Two really bad times both hiking with the turtle. Anyways...I started to feel good again and had plenty of time so I opted to follow the Humphreys trail to the glade. The trail is packed down well and marked with ribbons to the glade. I didn't take it either earlier today or on Friday. When I saw my Friday tracks I bypassed them and broke trail. It was only sinky from between 11k to the bomber wreck(so only a couple hundred feet) and after that it was mostly hard packed. There was new snow since Friday (maybe 2-3 inches) in someones tracks. He stopped at the bomber wreck area and skied down. I took a long break at the bomber wreck and chilled. Once I got to San Fransisco Mountain I could hear voices below me yelling. I stopped and listened but couldn't understand them. I waited a couple of minutes and heard them talking to each other so I knew they were ok. Never saw or heard them again but saw they had signed out.

The peak was a little hot with the sun blasting me. I snapped some pictures and headed across the ridgeline. I thought about Agassiz but had dinner plans and was starting to get really tired. My plan was to glissade below and a little north of the saddle but my heavy pack and the heavy wet snow slowed me down and I only had a few good bursts. Eventhough it was Monday, I decided to contour back to the trail instead of taking the easy way out. Fun day...

I didn't have time to summit today, and the wind was blowing big plumes off all the high ridges anyway, so I wandered around below treeline and checked out the new snow. Its plenty deep but a bit heavy and dense, slow work going uphill. Dutchman Glade had only one ski track.
