An end of year / new year hike with friends and Bruce. The Geology of the canyon was interesting. The group moved fairly fast and there were a few cool things to see along the way. Good way to finish off 2024.

Denny's New Years hike with a great group of 7 and Bruce was also there. Linda setup the car shuttle for us which was awesome. I'm not sure why Bruce is always so mean to her, she is really nice. We started when JJ arrived. I stayed in the car until then to keep warm. It was freezing at the start but warmed up pretty quick. Boring until the cool side canyon and the river. The fall colors down there were nice. I can't believe the places a motorcycle can go.

Thanks to Wally,Turtle, JJ, Linda, Ben, and Jess for making it a less boring hike. Ben's stories about his dad's hikes were funny.

I'll be ready to hike with Bruce again in 2030.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Bruce and I doing our New Years hike with a group of 8 today. Linda was nice enough to help me set up a shuttle car for the ones that had time restraints or didn’t want to do the whole hike.
We started about 8:30 with a breeze and cool temps. One shirt was fine once we started moving and the breeze stopped within the first mile.
Enjoyed exploring the wash and cool rock formations. Even a little Fall color at the river.
Nice fun group!! Thanks for picking another fun one Bruce! You da man!
Thanks to Bruce,Wally, Bob, JJ, Linda, Ben, and Jess for a great end of the year hike!! Like HAZ, you all rock!! Happy New Year early!!!

14th Annual NYE hike. Denny and I set up the shuttle a few minutes early, then met the group at the starting point just before 0830.

We headed down Indian Spring Wash towards the Verde River. Easy hiking as we gradually descended. Lots of interesting geology. The side canyon was neat too. Brush was minimal and generally easily avoided.

At the water, Bruce perched us on the side of a cliff for the photo, then had us scramble straight up about fifteen feet of loose rock. Nobody landed in the water, so it worked out okay. From there, most of the group headed to the vehicle we had dropped earlier, and Bruce, JJ, and I headed back up the wash.

The sand felt a little deeper as we climbed, but still an easy hike out. Going the opposite direction revealed new views and a few things we hadn’t noticed on the hike in. A small mining camp? with a rock wall, old bed frame, and water pipe near a dug out hole in the creek bank. Then later, a somewhat elaborate hobo camp hidden above the creek bed. Looked like two people (clothing indicated a man and a woman) had been living there for a considerable amount of time, lots of gear and trash.

Also noticed a larger mine partway up the hillside, but it looked like a steep approach. And some alcoves even higher up the hillside. Made good time on the hike out, even with the sand. Besides the excellent company and conversation, the geology was the highlight of this canyon. Good to hike with everyone again, and to meet Jess. Thank you to Bruce, and Denny, for organizing the hike—fun day!

Another great New Years Hike with a great group. I was a little concerned about the temps in the beginning but it quickly warmed up. This one was new to me and I don't love walking in sand but it actually turned out to be better than expected. Loved the Verde River at the end and the Robert Fisher/Hobo Camp on the hike back out. Good times with good peeps. Thanks for the invite Bruce and Denny.

Year 14 of the Denny/Bruce NYE hike!

We had a group of eight joining us for our trip to the Verde, including two new additions this year: Jess and Bob, who I haven’t hiked with since 2018! :o

It was a brisk and breezy start as we made our way through the culvert under Bartlett Lake Road. Once we entered the wash—also known as Bootleg Canyon—the wind died down, and the chill disappeared.

We navigated through the deadfall area, passed through the reeds, and took a brief detour up a short slot canyon to explore.

At the Verde, we took our obligatory group photo before splitting up. Linda, JJ, and I backtracked to the starting point, while the rest of the group headed to the shuttle vehicle we had placed earlier.

On the way back, Linda, with her eagle eyes, spotted a small mining ruin and later a hobo camp that all eight of us had somehow missed on the hike down. The camp had been abandoned for at least a few years but showed signs of having been lived in by at least two people for quite some time.

It was great to get together with the gang again.

Happy New Year to all my HAZ peeps!

With the recent unprecedented flow of the Verde, I wanted to see if I could still make it to the Verde via the Indian Spring Wash.

This is one of the easiest washes I've ever hiked in. There's only two places that are a little sticky. The first one coming from the north is a dead fall area. If you stay to the west you bypass most of it. The second is when you get to the area with the reeds. If you stay to the east, up against the canyon wall it's easy peasy.

The farther you get down the wash, the more flowers there are. All the typical ones seen this year, plus a bush I believe to be Chuparosa and also some Chia.

Approaching the river, I could see where it had receded somewhat. I climbed to a ridge to get a better view of the flow. [ youtube video ]

Next a stop at the gauge station, the cable car to get across the river and a walk down Horseshoe Dam Road to try and get a view of the flow at the dam. This is from a mile away. [ youtube video ]

Numerous people driving this road checking things out. Nobody was seen while I was in the wash.

I'm enjoying the continued great temps!

As many times as we have hiked down and back Indian Spring Wash to the slot canyon cave we’ve never hiked from one end to the other until today when we actually did it twice, up and back. At just about 6 miles, it’s nowhere near as long as we thought it was. For the purists in us, a few days before we also hiked the northern portion of the wash up to Indian Butte, from where it begins and then bushwhacked back, catching #1117 right at the Bartlett Dam Highway. That portion is very short, with no notable scenery, and not really worth mentioning except we did it. Since the highlight on Indian Spring Wash is the bootleg slot canyon, and some may only want to do that, I have laid out the various distances in this table. (Table format does not make its way from the draft to the finished product???)

FROM TO DISTANCE(approx.)
Rio Verde Parking lot to Indian Spring wash 1.0 miles
Indian Spring Wash(south end) to Slot Cyn Cave junction 2.3 miles
Slot cyn cave In and Out 0.3 miles
Slot Cyn Cave Jct to Culvert on Bartlett Dam Rd. 2.75 miles

So, for a 5.8 mile round trip you can access the cave from the culvert(north end), with scenic rock formations much of the way. The wash below the cave is also very nice, at least for a couple of miles down to the home of the Phallus Immanemque cliff dwellers. (see the picture) From there on down to the Verde, the wash becomes more of a delta, flat and wide. We left the wash more than ½ mile before the river to respect the Bald Eagle Breeding Area, which, though it is not marked in the wash, is known to be about ½ mile on either side of the river. There are several parking areas below the dam and we picked one with plenty of extra room about 1 mile from the wash. Taking note of @Eagle’s triplog, we didn’t bother exploring any other canyons and so ran up a GPS total of 12.4 miles.(The GPS itself says 11.99 miles but that's because it samples on an average of 12 seconds vs. my trip computer which averages 5 seconds) Saw no eagles or any other humans on the trail. Our friend, the dead owl, which we have seen on other visits, was still looking fairly chipper and holding court, but this time a little north of the cave junction, rather than south. He must have other friends that take him for a ride. We spooked a small herd of javelinas on the dirt road coming in below the dam just before 9 am. Heading south from the culvert you get one shot of Weaver’s Needle on a sightline right down the middle of the wash. As always, most of the pictures are from Phil, who has a real camera and knows how to use it. I have encouraged him to sign up on HIkeAZ but he's having trouble coming up with a suitable trail name, which I told him was a requirement.

Revisiting the Bootleg slot canyon down Indian Springs Wash and environs. We went to the cave and explored down below that for another .7 miles. No javelina today but a dead owl and hawk?? Met “Mike, the Fireman” down below the cave who has hiked and camped all around this area for sixty years, so far as we could deduce, and told us that the wash down to a road taking you to the dam was easy hiking and not that far so we’ll try and do the entire wash pretty soon from what we are calling Bartlett Lake Rd down to Rio Verde, or close. Unfortunately, the Arizona Topo map calls most of the roads in this area Horseshoe Dam roads which leads to some confusion among those relying on the map. We did discover one better way to access the wash. Historically, we park ¼ mile or so uphill past the culvert and accessing a wash at right angles to Indian Springs, make our way down to the real wash and head south. This involves a great deal of duking it out with the catclaw. Much better to park fairly close to the culvert, and access it from the north side coming in just past the fencing. Otherwise, there was really no catclaw to deal with in the wash. The bamboo forest has extended its reach and is now a couple of forests but they can be bypassed carefully by staying up on the rocks. Since this wash has become more popular, you will discover several auxiliary trails that have been established bypassing insurmountable obstacles in the middle of the wash which were not there when we did this six years ago(the obstacles were there but not the walkarounds). Most of these trails are on the western side of the wash and are not necessarily cairned, which adds to the adventure.

@Alston_Neal put this area on my radar years ago, @Muskybankr made me push it off.

I've wanted to do this Wash/Canyon from Bartlett Road to the Verde for sometime. Alston and Musky reported having to push though a forest of bamboo. I encountered the forest, but there were easily accessible routes around it, while staying in the canyon.

Fall has come to the area. Quite pretty.

Hiking in this Wash/Canyon way easy in mostly compacted gravel. I reached the Verde in a little over 2 hours. I climbed a little rock outcropping to get better views of the Verde :next: [ youtube video ] .

On the return trip, I hit up a few side canyons to do some 'splorin'. Nothing interesting until I hit up the slot canyon that goes towards the "Springs" on the Topo Map.

First this slot canyon is really sweet. It's tight and ends at a 40' pour, so no way to get to the "Springs" from here. Next, my excitement for the day. I'm heading into this slot canyon that's about 20' wide in most spots. Just before you go into the cave like area, it opens up a bit. I surprised a squadron of 20+ Javelina. I watched them scamper up the only possible area to go up in this canyon. Except for one that I did not see, 10' to my right. It that felt the need to go the opposite direction, right past me. :next: [ youtube video ]

Color should be good here for the next couple of weeks. Great weather all day.

Revisited the Indian Springs wash down to the bootleg slot canyon and was pleased to find it bereft of the typical deadfall which completely block the trail. The bamboo thicket down by the springs remains impenetrably abundant but fortunately, unlike the saguaro, does not seem to grow out of rocks, so it can be circumvented if you have boots with a high traction quotient. The wash itself is lined with canyon walls consisting of what I will call volcanic breccia but that is because I am not a geologist. It’s probably something else but there are all kinds of different rocks strewn along the trail so it begs for a geological docent to conduct an interpretive hike before it gets too hot. The Chuparosa were starting to bloom. I include a few photos of rocks and flowers.

Sixty five degrees May 1st, yep we'll see if the FS has opened the wash for off roaders yet. Nope still closed ..YEAH!!!!
We were gonna go farther but a very active bee hive in a canyon turned us around, but hey we did the Devil's distance.

It only took me about 40 years to go south from the Bartlett Dam road. We have always gone north up Indian Springs Wash, but I've been wanting to go down it for decades. It was an awesome choice and with temps in the 50's, a perfect day. I tell ya it's a jungle out there. We were surprised this wash turned into a slot canyon and choked with giant cane in one area. I'm pretty sure we won't go down this at the height of rattlesnake season and with the lower temps the 3 beehives we came upon were not panic inducing. We were also pleased that we had the canyon to ourselves with it being a hunting season. This place reminded us of Spur Cross, albeit without the fee, the people, horses, mountain bikers, horse poo, trail runners and did I mention people?

The last time we did this wash, a little more than a year ago, we noticed Tonto National Forest was planning on reopening this to vehicles. Bummer, it has been inspiring to see the desert return from the very heavy use and the fire. Sunday we decided to go out and see if it had been opened to vehicles....Nope!!! Yeah!!. We were heading up the wash and noticed that forest road signs had been placed and a small tractor had made trails...fug! Just under a mile up we came upon a side trail #1117 that went up another wash we've always wanted to do, so what the heck. A little tractor had made a path awhile back because it was well eroded and stuff was already growing in the trail. Let's do this maybe our last time and see where it goes. About another mile in pieces of metal caught my eye. Aircraft parts. So we explored the area and found more bits. Came back to work and went to the Aviation Archeology site with no success. I went to GE and in a direct line down the runway from Carefree Airport and 12.8 miles lies the site.
We headed on up the trail for views of the Verde valley and then headed toward Indian Butte, looping back cross country to Indian Springs Wash.

I heard about this slot canyon hidden behind an impenetrable “bamboo” forest at the end of a three mile bushwhack down the Indian Spring Wash off the Bartlett Dam road through overgrown thickets of catclaw and hackberry, requiring crawls under and over innumerable downed trees and flood piles with the intermittent necessity of fighting off herds of flying javelinas unused to sharing their little paradise with humans, so, of course I had to see it. Two words of caution: 1) wear long pants and a long-sleeved shirt, 2) If you wear hearing aids, leave them at home or have them insured. I came back, minus one hearing aid, a bloody left ear, and with some imbedded cholla spines in my arms that found their way through my sleeves. The javelina were upset, to say the least, but when we kept coming through their grunts and growls, they were, thankfully, more afraid of us than vice-versa. Did you know they can run about 25 mph and jump pretty well too? Of course, they probably knew the territory. Still, it’s a bit unnerving to see 50-75 pound animals with tusks flying off a ledge not that far in front of you.

Despite the brambles, this is not a difficult hike, although there is a fair amount of backing out of “dead ends” and finding a different way, one stays in the wash all the way to the canyon. It’s a nice downhill slope and all the branches are running away from you. Coming back out is a bit harder for the same reason. There are many large specimens of Fremont Cottonwood, willow and what may have been velvet ash, providing shade and shadows. Until I’m corrected, I’m calling the “bamboo,” Giant Reed (arundo donax), which the Government says, “is a bamboo-like grass with stems that grow over 20 feet tall” which pretty much fits what we saw. The February inch plus of rain in Cave Creek sent a cascade of rocks, trees and boulders downstream, which penetrated this “bamboo” forest, and actually made this hike quite a bit easier, according to a Spur Cross docent, who led us down the wash to the canyon.

There are quite a few springs in the lower reaches of the wash, which is where we found the javelinas. The sun has a bit of a problem reaching the floor of the wash where it narrows and consequently, flowers were not abundant. Hikes of this nature do not reveal themselves to the importunings of $5 cameras so although I’ll include a photoset, this little jewel needs to be seen in person. We actually did some downstream exploring after seeing the slot canyon but got stopped by the brush and cliffs.
The slot canyon itself winds a few hundred feet to the NE(the entrance can be missed) and involves some minor scrambling to get all the way back to where a 75 foot(approx) waterfall would splash down into your cave during a rain. See photoset. The cave itself is sufficiently sized to house a large family.

Devils Hole has been on the list for a long time and moved up when the area was closed to motorized travel a few years ago. After Ken indicated the area will reopen soon it moved even higher :)

We took Indian Spring Wash / FR 532 out to Devils hole - enjoyed the whole area and the pool at the river is pretty cool with the rock outcroppings.

After we got back a Maricopa sheriff stopped to make sure we weren't going to leave the vehicle blocking the gate  anyway he indicated the area was due to reopen in March but that may get delayed a few weeks.

The start of Indian Springs wash is on the north side of the Bartlett Lake road 2.9 miles past the Horseshoe Dam road turnoff.
As a family we started coming out here in 1983 going all the way to the Verde River. In 2005 this area was closed to vehicle trafic which was a good thing since it was getting heavy use. Either before it closed or right after a fire came though. My wife and I have been coming out here quite a lot and have been telling our son about it. He moved to Seattle last year and was coming home for his B-Day and said he wanted to go out to Indian Spring.
He also spent much of his time out here sans parental guidance...ahem....and was impressed with it's recovery.
Hiking the wash north for about 2.5 miles will bring you to the saddle, the spring box is a couple hundred yards to the east in a wooded draw. From there if one wants to it's 3.9 miles down the wash to the Verde River at an area between Bartlett and Horseshoe.
This wash is a great hike in early morning or in the evening.
