After the Whitewater Rafting Trip, there's was still plenty of daylight to do something else and after researching a little bit, I picked this. According to several sources, it was the most Scenic Waterfall in the area.

The drive was beautiful and there were several places where dispersed camping would be really nice. Got to the gravel pit and parked and started down the trail. About 200 yards or so in, there is a turnoff which takes you to a Observation Deck about mid fall. I went there first and I was absolutely in love with this waterfall. It's a very complex waterfall with a lot of different little areas and scenes that were just as photogenic as the overall fall itself. I kept the camera busy and due to the later hour, I was able to photograph at longer shutter speeds without a filter.

After I exhausted a camera battery there, I backtracked to the main trail and took it down to another deck that is almost at the base of the falls. In addition to the main falls, just barely downstream there is another large fall that drops the creek at least another 30 feet. The terrain was so steep here, that I didn't even try to get down to the base of those. Maybe some day with way more daylight. Exhausted another camera battery and then hiked out. It's a beautiful little hike through old growth forest and an awesome reward at both observation decks.

Just a note. Unfortunately I forgot to turn on RS, so I didn't get a track, but the Official Route is outdated. They probably built more trail and the lower deck after that track was published. The most recent track, from Paul, if cleaned up a bit, would be the closest to the actual mileage and AEG.

The drive back was just as nice and with recommendations from the Whitewater Crew, I stopped at the Backwoods Brewery in Carson for dinner. While it was interesting on a Friday night that they close at 8:00 pm, I made it in just under the wire and the Whitewater crew was right. Don't know about the beer, but the food was awesome and it was a great, friendly atmosphere. Great way to end my day and a great way to end my time again in the Columbia River Gorge. I would be leaving to meander a little closer to home in the morning.

Hike with Sarah, Deborah, and Patrick. Nice, cool afternoon. Trail is somewhat remote, but a few other hikers were seen. Developed, with guide rails, stairs, and multiple warning signs.

Rappelled off a tree between the creek split and the main section of the falls. Very fun drop, little awkward actually getting on rope on the slippery/muddy edge of the falls, but otherwise everything went really smoothly. The free hanging section is super fun- with water raining down from the creek above. Definitely worth doing again.

There were a couple other hikers present that had flagged me down on the drive in and asked for directions- so I escorted them to the falls. One of the guys took shots of me descending the falls, I gave him my contact info and am still waiting on him to send me the photos.

Afterwards I went hunting for Chanterelles, I drove up Forest Rd 65 and looped back to the highway along FR60. Stopped about a dozen times and only had luck on my very last stop as the sun was beginning to set. I think its still a bit too early in the season.

While exploring southern Washington with my girlfriend and her dog, we decided to hit up Panther Creek Falls. Its much more remote than most of the falls in the Columbia River Gorge and makes a good alternative for a weekend.

After visiting the falls, we decided to keep heading up the forest road towards "Trout Lake". We didn't know anything about it, but the name sounded amazing! It had been a warm overcast day, and the road gave no indication of what we would soon find ahead. Within 2 miles we found ourselves moving through small patches of snow and ice. Then, quite unexpectedly as we decided it was probably time to turn around, we encountered a much larger drift of snow and got the truck stuck. We put on tire chains and spent hours trying to dig it, but it refused to budge. With no cell service and a ham radio that decided to malfunction at the worst possible time, we decided it was time to bundled up for the night inside the truck and waited for morning to keep digging it out.

Unfortunately the next morning we awoke to another 6 inches of fresh snow on the ground. Our plans to continue digging the truck out were quickly put to bed and we decided our only choice was to hike back to civilization. We donned our snow gear and packs and headed out. If not for being tired and cold from sleeping in the cramped truck overnight, it was a rather peaceful hike out. All the trees were covered in fresh powder and there were animal tracks all over the ground.

We hiked out a couple miles as the snow level dropped quickly until we ran into a couple that was trying to drive their car up the road. We explained our situation and told them how deep the snow was and they promptly offered us a ride and drove us back to Stevenson WA, where we were able to have a buddy from Portland drive out and pick us up.

It continued to snow heavily for the next week in the forest above panther creek falls. I spent most of my time at work scouring the radar maps and watching the snow accumulate in the area my truck was at. I contacted local tow companies (all that said they would be unable to get to it) and even tried to hire a guy who was selling a pickup truck on Craigslist with a plow attached to the front to retrieve it with us. We made 1 failed attempt to retrieve the truck before the snow finally melted enough for us to grab it 2 weeks later.

Moral of the story- always be prepared!
