A few months back while looking at the SOTA Map of peaks I saw this one. It had never been activated and looked like a fun one to try to summit. I sent my proposed route to hank and Larry and after some minor tweaking it was ready.

Hank and I settled on this past Sunday and we headed out.

Arriving at the camp ground on Workman creek we headed up. Crossed the creek and made our way to the fire brake. The fire brake made for a nice 3/4 mile long wide trail we covered the distance quickly then we hit the steep section made our way over to a rocky sort of ridge which was like climbing stairs. When I made it to the summit I was amazed at how large and flat it was. My thought was you could camp an army up here. There was also evidence of trees hit by lightning all over the summit.

I walked around a little ate some lunch and setup my radio equipment made about 30 contacts packed up and then began the steep hike down to the fire brake.

This first time activation of W7A/GI-001 Carr Mountain was great. I always enjoy hiking with my friend Hank.

In mid March Brian had expressed an interest in attempting a summit hike to this 7630' "Summits on the Air" (SOTA) mountain off Workman Creek Road (FR487). As many times as I had been up this road in past years to do various hikes in this area, I had no idea this topo-named high elevation mountain was just one mile off-trail from the popular FR487 Falls Campground area :?

Brian had posted a planning route on our HAZ Route Manager for viewing and I soon located a posted Oct'06 pic from our RWStorm(Randy) http://hikearizona.com/photo=333694 confirming that it was definitely for real :)

For just a two(2) mile off-trail day hike some would say why would we consider driving a round trip of 6+ hours and a total of 244 miles? Actually, there were a number of reasons:

For Brian-
..Within the SOTA classifications, this mountain had never before been activated by any SOTA member and thus Brian would have the honors of being the named activator of record as well as an opportunity to add another deserved 10 SOTA points to his present SOTA status of 218 points * ;
..He knows I will take pics of his SOTA activation for bragging rights & posting on their & his website;
..We had planned a celebration Memorial Day weekend dinner meal in Miami at- :next: igallery/image_page.php?id=4168 ;

For me-
..I had not had any hiking exercise since my last 4/27 & was up for almost anything within reason;
..I enjoy hiking with Brian and viewing his SOTA activities;
..An opportunity for another new area hike in one of my most favorite Wilderness areas to be;
..I had purchased and received on 4/28 a new GPS Receiver- Oregon 600 and this hike would be my first real opportunity to field test it (I will post my first field test findings/opinions later in the HAZ Oregon 600 forum thread);
..I had purchased and received on 5/15 a new pocket size Sony DSC-WX50 (year 2012 CMOS release), the present same small camera that Joe B. uses; This hike would be my first opportunity to field test it for my limited needs; For my now posted 5/25 pic-set I decided not to Photoshop edit any of my original 38 posted pics so that I could view the natural camera results of my two selected Sony picture modes: the "Superior Auto" mode and the "Program" mode; For this day hike, I tried to take two pics of the same scene, one pic with each mode; My objective being to evaluate unedited each similar scene/pic mode for color, shade-lighting, clarity, and focus thus trying to make a determination of which mode- "Superior Auto or Program" I liked the best. I can now report that I prefer the overall results of the Sony "Superior Auto" mode the best and will most likely continue using this mode along with my as required Photoshop editing for ongoing posted HAZ pic-sets using this camera :D

* = For Brian: 218 SOTA points + 10 additional for Carr Mountain = 228 : app :
(Congratulations to Brian for now being ranked number 3 in the USA for 12 Meter Band CW)
