With the hot weather upon us I figured I'd bag the easiest of the last seven peaks on my list in the Mormon Flat Dam Quadrangle.

I knew the drive to the trailhead was rough enough to beat me up before I got started so I made sure to start early to beat the heat as much as possible and take plenty of fluids. After running short on my last hike Tracey told me to take some water to cache partway out so I'd have something extra if needed. While it was a good idea, descending the ravine for the first 3/4 mile with a gallon jug of water in one hand was not too smart. It added enough difficulty to the task that I would probably need to replenish more fluid than it would provide. So by time I had gone a mile I was happy to drop it off.

I had planned to follow the wash for some time before climbing but with the wash winding so much sooner was better so I began the climb. Once on the ridge it was relatively easy going but with loose rocks all over I had to take care not to roll an ankle.

The ridge didn't continue all the way so I had to drop down and cross a canyon before climbing back up to the ridge to finish the climb to the summit. If it wasn't going to be so hot I would have followed a more meandering route to take in more of the awesome views, but even so there was much to see.

At the summit of Peak 2500 I took the usual video & photos before having my PB&J lunch. Already over 100°, knowing I'd probably add some side-trips to the return leg I figured I better get moving. Although I liked the ridge route, being the first trip out here I wanted to cover new ground on the return leg so I took a lower route on the return leg.

I still had plenty of fluids when I returned to my cached gallon jug of water, but I wasn't about to leave it there and I sure didn't want to haul an extra 7 pounds the last mile up the ravine so I took off my pack and proceeded to pour the water on my shirt and hat hoping to take advantage of evaporation. It would have worked much better if the water wasn't already 105°, but after a few minutes it began to take effect and the last mile was a bit more pleasant.

I posted 50 photos here on HAZ, but even the full set of 131 photos on my web site don't come close to covering the views adequately. So although I did a reasonable amount of wandering about this trip, I will return when it's cooler and spend a full day wandering far enough to get a view of the Mormon Flat Dam.
