One of my objectives on this trip was to get a little more familiar with Palomar Mountain State Park for a possible future trip. I wanted to take a look at the campground, since it is 30 dollars a night to camp there versus 15 bucks (7.50 for me) at the nearby Forest Service campgrounds. To save money this trip I opted for a night at Observatory CG, then headed over to the park and paid the day fee to look around. The park is in a beautiful setting with great views to the west and the ocean, etc. No wonder it is so popular. :)

The hike to this historic fire tower was a must. It really is pretty unique. Volunteers from the state park staff it, and the lookout on duty that day, Shane, was very friendly and gave me lots of information on its history, etc.

Since I decided I was not going to spend a second night up there, I asked him about the Nate Harrison Grade Road visible below us to the west going down the mountain to Highway 76 and Pauma Valley. He lives in Oceanside and drives it regularly and said it is a good road. I decided to head down off the mountain that way versus taking S6 or S7, which I had done before. Glad I did...the road was a blast! :D
