I was on my way up to Flagstaff and decided to stop off at a couple of fire lookout sites that I had not been to before: Munds Park and Saddle Mountain 8880.

Munds Park
This one was just off of I-17 at the Willard Springs Rd exit.

I had to park at the gate just before Willard Springs Campground, because the gate was still locked due to the fire closure of the Coconino NF. This was the first day that the forest reopened, and the forest service had not yet had time to unlock the gate. However, the gate was open when I got back.

If the gate had been open, I could have driven to within 400-500 feet of the summit; however, it was an easy and enjoyable hike.

There were good views at the summit to the south, west, and north; trees blocked views to the east. I located the benchmark, which was labelled "T.T.".

I was not able to find out any details about what sort of lookout tower, if any, was there once upon a time.

Saddle Mountain 8880
This was an easy one to get to. I could have driven on FR 550A up to a locked gate about 300-400 feet from the summit, but I decided to park and walk up the road so as to make a hike out of it. The road had a modest grade and there were nice views of the area going up and down.

I saw a benchmark disk at the summit.

I do not know any details about the lookout, but I have seen a picture of the lookout tower that was taken in 1960. There is no evidence of a tower having been there however. There are now some communication antennae and a building at the summit.

The stats for the 2 hikes are below. The stats above are the sum of the two.

Munds Park: 2.8 miles with 292 feet of AEG
Saddle Mountain 8880: 4.9 miles with 761 feet of AEG

Second hike of day 2

It was still pleasant out so we headed up Saddle Mountain. We walked the road at first and when it started bending away we headed straight up. The views don't open up until you're close to the top. The steep incline works the hindquarters if you have four legs and if two legged it works the califs. The views were sweet but the solar panels and towers take away some of the beauty. On the way back we found an old road and all of a sudden I saw mama bear and 2 cubs. I quickly got Bruno on leash and tried to get a snap a photo :( . Fun area...nice temps and great company.
