Headed up to Flag for a company retreat and stayed at Little America. This was the high class hotel when I was growing up. It still has much of its swagger. In the morning, went on a trail run. The loops near the hotel are on the hotel's private property. Ventured beyond that a bit. Lots of great trail running and mountain biking options in this area. The morning temps were lovely--especially compared to the heat-fest I've been running in down in the Valley.

Radmila got a gig adjudicating a piano competition at NAU, which necessitated an overnight stay. We planned this trip with the idea that we would go up Friday, making a 3 day weekend or of it, and do some hiking. The first day we had planned to hike from the Canyon Vista Campground to Fisher Point. On the way up that morning we knew that wasn't going to happen with all the rain and lightning everywhere. It was about noon when we got there and the rain was steady, as well as the thunder. We ate lunch in the car and opted for an early check in to the hotel.

By about 3 the rain had let up so we decided to venture out. Little America has a trail system right there, which made driving unnecessary. I saw that their trails connect with the FUTS system by a few dirt roads so we started to check some of that out.

We made our way over to the Foxglenn Trail and stated to hike some of that. It's mainly a wide trail the size of a road, but no tire tracks. We didn't get too far before we encounter an inactive heavily excavated construction site that engulfed the trail making it impassable. From the looks of the water and sewer pipe my guess is a subdivision, but we also saw markers for golf course holes.

We walked a bit more, exploring some jeep roads that dead ended or circled around and then headed back to get dinner. We were happy enough to make due and salvage the day with a few miles and a little exploration.

After the first day at the work conference, I wanted to get some exercise in and the Little America hiking trails are just out back. I've done these trails previously and know that they connect to some of Flagstaff's urban trails. I also have a NatGeo map that shows a spur of the AZT going up near there. I'm not sure that the map is accurate in the regard of that being an official part of the AZT.

I headed to the southern part of the loops looking for the trails that headed towards the AZT. Just south of the loops is what appears to be a meadow. Upon looking at the maps after the hike, it looks like this is actually a section of the Rio de Flag. I walked a short portion of a Flagstaff urban trail, but it was going north and I wanted to go south. So I headed south and followed what were roads on the offline mapping that aren't really there anymore. I ended up crossing the Rio de Flag and over on a old road/bike trail and headed south. Followed those roads down to Hoffman Tank, went east a little further and then headed back since it was getting late. Took a section of Loop B on the Little America trails on the way back. Nice to get out and explore a little more and take advantage of the situation.

On this day, Father's Day and the last day of my 59th year, I hoped to make an attempt at Humphrey Peak. Alas, my family, the elements and even an Uber ride all conspired against me. I settled for a walk around some trails near the hotel. My mood soon brightened as I strolled through the pines. I came upon an open meadow and was greeted with the sound of coyotes announcing my presence. As I looked in their direction, I spotted 8-10 elk grazing in the distance. Soon after I came upon 5 mule deer grazing a mere 100 feet away, paying no heed that I had stopped to watch them. Beautiful.

I headed back to the hotel, woke up my wife and son, and went out for breakfast. By now I was quite happy that I wasn't slogging up a steep mountain under a warm sun with smoke from the Kendrick fire possibly choking the air. Maybe next time.

Happy Father's Day to all you Dads out there!

In Flagstaff for the weekend and staying at the Little America. I was pleasantly surprised by their hiking trail! It has two loops (A and B). If you want a very short hike (1.6 miles) just do loop A. I did both loops A and B. Lots of pretty pines and squirrels. Great way to enjoy the afternoon!

Finished the first day of the water reuse symposium and had just enough time to hike the trails behind the hotel before dark. There was some light rain at the start, but it ended soon. Everything was soaked from an entire day of rain, which was a very nice contrast to the Phoenix summer weather. Used,Route Scout to record and immediately upload the track when I finished, so the hike description for this hike should now have an official route.

This is also the first hike I'm posting on HAZ exclusively with my phone, so a first for me in that regard.

My wife and I are celebrating a milestone tomorrow, so we took a couple of days off and came to one of our fave destinations: Little America in Flagstaff. After Checking out the downtown area for a couple of hours, we came back to the hotel and hit a portion of the quaint nature trail that runs along the east side of the hotel. It was gorgeous out.

Enjoying a few days hiking around Flagstaff. We used Little America as a base camp. Yesterday was a butt kicker hike in the Inner Basin. So today was sort of a rest day, so a drive out to Grand Falls, and some downtown shopping at Babbitt's. Needed to stretch the legs a little late in the day to finish driving out the stiffness. The Little America trail was right out the back door of our room and thus perfect.

One of the signs along the trail mentions it is all about pines, squirrels and lava rock. That's true and you get serenaded by the rumble of traffic on nearby I-40. But is easy to forget how close you are to the city with Albert's squirrels running across the trail, wind in the pines and even a glimpse at a nice little riparian area. Was a nice leg stretcher.

Full description later.

Just a casual walk around the extended loop with my daughter Emma. Viewed quite a bit of wildlife including, lizards, ravens, hawks, bluebirds, rabbits, prairie dogs and squirrels. The forest is not as thick as it used to be after a fire ripped through this area, but the property has been cleaned up well. Not a lot of signs of burnt trees. A few log and brush piles here and there.

This is my gym. I have to travel down a bumpy road to get there. There are no treadmillls, no machines, and no personal trainers. I walk..I run..I breathe the fresh air. I can go any time I want, as much as I want and there is no membership fee.

To wind down our trip, we spent the night in Flag at the Little America Hotel and enjoyed hotel amenities. After the breakfast buffet, the wife and kids hit the pool while I hit the trails. The trails in the back are two figure 8 trails that would total about 4.5 miles. I did the smaller loop. I wanted to hike all of them, but after finishing the smaller loop, I had 1.5 hours to check out, and I needed to hike another 2.5 miles to finish. Not doing the bigger loop turned out to be wise decision since a downpour hit us before checkout time.

The south end of these loops is very nice as it overlooks some nice meadows and connects with Flagstaff's urban trails.

and a good time was had by all.
