We headed out to the Blue Range Friday morning and stopped here on our way in to stretch our legs. Bear Creek Trail was in great shape and so were the short portions of the Black River Trail that we hiked. We spent considerable time letting the dogs play in the water and hitting a few deeper holes ourselves. We did not see anyone on the trail, or at the trailhead.

This trail will always have a little sentimental value to me. The locust is coming back in the usual spots, but I gave it a quick once over with the clippers. The Black was flowing nicely and apart from a little locust, the trail was in great shape and the surrounding forest looks healthier with each year.

I think I enjoy taking the boys on these summer camps as much as I enjoy coaching sometimes. After two trips to Colorado and a summer lost to the pandemic, we opted for the White Mountains this year and a dual team tournament at Show Low High School on Saturday.

A non profit provided us with tents and meals and we stayed from Thursday to Sunday in the woods, with a trip into Show Low to wrestle on Saturday. Wrestling speaking, we went 4-0 our pool and lost in the cross bracket match for first. Outdoors wise, we had a blast. Nearly three days of no service and some great fun at camp. We camped just over 8,000 feet and although it got a little warm at points throughout the day, the nights and mornings were perfect. The horseback ride was the highlight of the trip this year. We started at Sprucedale Ranch and then plotted a meandering course through the woods to the Bear Creek Trail. From there we rode down to the Black river and headed up stream to complete a loop back with the ranch. There were several crossings and the ride was a little technical, but we all managed and the boys had a blast. In particular, they were big fans of the swim hole and lunch stop, especially, after three plus hours on a horse. I must say, five hours on a horse is a long time and I found it to bother my knees a bit, plus saddle sore is real. However, I left wanting more surprisingly. There is something nostalgic about riding a horse and it was such a cool way to see my stomping grounds. In fact, I inquired about a stay at Sprucedale and another ride in September or October with Katie and hope to get back there.

I left this camp feeling fulfilled, but absolutely exhausted. I really like getting these kids out of the valley during the summer and into the woods, and with the pandemic last year and the loss of most team activities, it felt extra special to be able to get the boys out to a camp again this summer. I think we will be back for sure.

A leisurely last hike of a great 3 day/ 3 night trip out in White Mountains/Blue Range.

Tired and warm we hiked down the relaxing BC trail with a little deadfall to negotiate and went down to the river to cool off and play in the water.

I absolutely love the Black River and it’s Montanzona like features making me feel like I’m in a dreamland.

Hardest part of trips like this is coming home, I may just have to really get off the grid and offically relocate out to Alpine or Springerville ;)

I wanted a mellow, relaxing day after the big accidental on purpose loop the day before. Plus Mark could fish while the rest of us meandered along the river (thanks for the suggestion Elizabeth!) Even Tugger had had it from the previous day and just wanted to relax in the meadow, so Karl and Laura and I headed down the river a bit until the crossing would've required us getting our shoes wet. We decided it was time to go back and drink beer. :) So nut job Karl actually found a swimming hole and went FULLY into the frigid waters! Yipes, no thanks! :o Karl, you're a true nut job (no wonder Tugger likes you so much - birds of a feather...... )

Despite the burned out sections and obstacle course it made of the trail a lot of the way, it sure is pretty down there by the river! The road there FR 24 was a pretty depressing drive. What I would do to get my hands on those nimrods that started that fire :x :gun: ](*,) But the road Mark and I took out (FR 26) to head back to Tuscon was WAAAAAAY better!!!! So graded and nice, and lush and pretty!

After hiking Bear Mountain Loop the day before we were ready for an easy hike, some scenery and relaxing time on the Black River. Our access point would be Bear Canyon Trail #66 which was only about 3/4 mile hike down to the Black River from the TH.

Once down on the Black River some hung out, did some fishing, or hiked downstream to check more of the river. Amy, Laura and I went downstream about 2 miles until there was a mandatory crossing. Then part way back I stopped at swimming hole for a dip and a beverage.

Very relaxing and pretty along this section of the Black River. Would be nice to come back and do a backpack. There are great camp spots and of course finding water is no issue...just need to be ready for multiple wet crossings along the way.
