The footing also turned more to a rough gravel some way up-canyon. This was a nice change from the loose heaps of ankle-breakers on the fan. Progress was slow because I spent so much time staring up at the surrounding walls and peaks. There was so much fresh bighorn sign, I expected to come face to face with one any minute, so was also trying to be as quiet as possible. No luck on that front, but it was pretty obvious why this was named Sheep Canyon.
Having mis-read the hiking book, I turned around just short of Sheep Spring . The hike out also ended up taking only half the time as the hike in, so I would have had plenty of daylight to continue. Funny that you sometimes don't quite notice how steep the wash is going up, but you just fly coming down. Fortunately, Death Valley isn't really a very far drive for me, so plenty of chances to get in more hiking here. |
