| no partners | | Decided to hike up Government Hill as there were two geocaches on the mountain that I wanted to find. Both of these geocaches were 23 months lonely, which means the last time they were found was 23 months ago. Parked at the end of a dirt road, just off Spring Valley Road and started heading up. The first geocache was on top of one of the false summits at an elevation of 7960'. So I ended up taking the shortest route to it, which happened to be straight up the rock covered mountain slope. This was probably the steepest section of the entire hike. After finding and logging the cache, I continued up to the second one which was at a saddle to the north. Getting here wasn't too bad until I reached a section of the mountain covered in fallen trees and debris. This slowed my ascent as there was no clear path through the mess. It also started raining a bit, which was not predicted on the weather app, but thankfully it only lasted five minutes. Eventually I made it to the saddle, found and signed the geocache log.
At this point I headed up towards the summit to hopefully find the summit log. Near the top, I found the remains of what looks to be a small structure or storage area. Didn't see any evidence of people being up here other than that structure. Continued up and made it to the summit. Searched for awhile, but failed to find a summit log. Also, the previous triplog on this summit reports they found some survey disks. I also failed to find any disks and the NGS database does not report any benchmarks up here. The only interesting thing I found, was a rock with five vertical slashes in it.
Started heading down and found a much easier way to return to my truck. Just followed the ridgeline down. Along the way I found a tree someone named Matt had carved his name and date into. I also found an rusty can of what I presumed to be chainsaw fuel buried under a log. Enjoyable hike in all and a good workout too.
