Road trip out to Clifton/Morenci for a little hiking and sightseeing.

1) 1 mile hike up Red Canyon and back. Amazing colors and geology, one of the coolest canyons on the block!
2) Took the "long walk for freedom" up to the Mares Bluff Veterans Memorial. Rang the Freedom bell and took in the sights of Clifton from above.
3) Drove up through Morenci and down to the new Freeport-Mcmoran mine overlook. Just Wow! 2nd largest hole in AZ and largest open pit mine in North America. The scale and operation of this place is almost too much for my mind to comprehend.
4) We then continued on up the Coronado Trail to the Chase Creek overlook for a look down on it all.
5) Quick stop on the drive back down at the Bee Hill Cemetery, most unique cemetery I've ever seen.
6) Picked up food at Los Mendoza Taco Shop and ate at Freedom Park before the drive back home to Safford.

Awesome day in Greenlee County,
Thanks to my buddy AddSanz for taking and sharing the day with me!
:D

It's been 10+ years since my first visit :o
What a cool, cool colorful canyon!
Only took it up 1 mile, was crunched for time to get all I wanted done in Clifton.
Beautiful canyon, lots of amazing geology, a little history & red rock everywhere.
Will not wait 10 years for trip #3
On the drive out of Ward Canyon I stopped and did the Mares Bluff Veterans Memorial Trail.
A must if in the area, very nicely done memorial on top with great views down on Clifton.
Then a walk down to the San Francisco river and up to the historic Chase Creek district before leaving.
On the way home a quick stop was made at sunset to collect a hand full of saffordites along Haekel Road.
Wonderful day in Greenlee County!
:D

Plan was to go up the Coronado Trail but the weather looked bad higher up so I turned around and drove back down to Clifton to hike Red Canyon. Wow, what a very colorful canyon full of reds, browns, golds & copper! The rain stayed away as I made my way up the canyon to about the 2 mile mark where I found the ruins of an old mining camp(?) and made this my turnaround point. Will definitely come back in the future to explore further up this canyon. On the drive back to Clifton I stopped a mile up the road and hiked up to the Mares Bluff war memorial.

Fun lunch hike while working in Clifton. Made it to the 4000 foot level, where the canyon began to open up into less interesting topography, then turned around. Saw more large mountain lion (I think) tracks in the sandy wash.

After driving past this canyon a million times, I decided I had to check it out (I had nothing better to do on a Thursday evening). Better than I expected, I'll say. Colorful rock, unusual formations, a couple of small (dry) waterfalls, and a mine. Five inch diameter cougar tracks kept me constantly scanning my surroundings as dusk fell. I only had time for a short hike, so I will return to explore the rest of the canyon later.
