We were in Bisbee with some friends for the Halloween weekend and decided to do the Bisbee 1000 Saturday morning. Turned out the 1000 stairs was more enjoyable than the drunken Halloween debauchery later that day. It's also a fun way to see Bisbee as the path takes you to seemingly every corner of the town. And I had @The_Eagle route which came in very handy for navigation. Also it just so happened that the actual Bisbee 1000 Stairs annual event was the week before so there were still road markings to help show the way!

I arrived in Bisbee on Tuesday just in time to check in to my Airbnb, an absolutely fantastic place to stay - lmk if you want a suggestion. After checking out the place and settling in a bit, I decided to start by hiking part of the Ridge Trail to see the town from above. All I had to do was continue up the stairway I was already on, then follow the canyon up to meet the trail - but partway up, I was lured off track by a path heading east ... eventually I ended up just about crawling up the steep hillside to intersect the trail. Continuing straight up the canyon, staying just left of the check dams would have been the right move ... next time I'll know.
Once I finally emerged on the Ridge Trail, I took a right and followed it east for a bit to a really nice viewpoint looking down on Castle Rock and all the way out to the mines, then turned around and headed back west towards the Adams Ave trailhead at Laundry Hill. Next time I'll continue east, where the trail leads to Brewery Gulch and beyond - apparently back in the day this trail was the preferred way to connect the two ends of town ... I wouldn't want to walk this trail in the dark after hitting the saloons, though - it's a good trail - but quite narrow, with no room for drunken stumbles.
There are three really good stairways at the top of Laundry Hill, two of which lead to/from Art Ave ... one of them (#70 in the book - 164 steps) would be impossible to find from either end if you didn't know - the bottom takes off from between two garages adjacent to the Circle K, and looks like it only goes to one house - but it keeps going and going, changing directions at least six times before emerging unceremoniously from between two houses at the end of Laundry Hill. The third one is #72 in the book, and is #6 on the BZB1000 route ... I hit that at twilight, and it was pretty magical.
After that I headed to Thuy's for chicken curry, and climbed one more stairway while I waited for my food - which was phenomenal.
On Wednesday morning I did a bunch of stairs and streets on the south side of Tombstone Canyon Rd, in the area of the Courthouse and Quality Hill to Castle Rock, including #7, #8 and #9 of the race route. I ran across the Bisbee swimming pool and park - with a very nice outdoor fitness court, pickleball, basketball and playground. I talked to several locals who were out walking dogs, climbing stairs, riding bikes and doing yard work ... I dig the locals and I feel so at home here - I found myself photographing all the houses that are for sale for some reason, lol.
I took a very steep and fun stairway down that brought me to Main St between the Bisbee Royale and the Castle Rock Inn - so I went into the Inn to see the Apache Springs Well. The mineshaft/well played a major part in the discovery of copper and the founding of Bisbee - it's pretty cool that you can still see it from the building that was built over it in 1895.
Eventually I had to check out of the cottage - after a nice chat with one of the owners, who have lived in Bisbee for over 40 years - and I made one more stop at Garfield Park to hike and bird some stairs and streets in that area. The highlight of this neighborhood was probably Spring Canyon Rd, which has a pedestrian tunnel under the highway, and some cool things to see in the blocks tucked away on the other side. The very end of the road seems to lead to some hiking trails up Spring Canyon that I'll check out in the future.
Between the routes I recorded on Route Scout and the ones I recorded on Ebird, I walked over seven miles and climbed/descended at least 1500 steps. I'm already looking forward to the next visit! :D

I didn't follow the exact route of the BZB1000, but I definitely did more than 1000 stairs ... my calves were still sore two days later!
My favorite thing in the world is exploring, and Bisbee is made to explore - so I'm newly obsessed with it ... I've visited twice in February, and have the next visit already booked for early March.
I've stayed at two different hotels so far - one on Brewery Gulch, and one on Main Street. The Bisbee Inn/Hotel La More on Brewery Gulch was the best so far. I stayed in room 23 - the ghost cat room! Did not meet the ghost cat - or any other entities - but I did really enjoy the energy of the place, chatting with other visitors, and meeting the live cat who lives there ... his name is King Henry, and I sat on the porch providing him a warm lap on a cold night for about an hour. The Bisbee Ghost Tour came by while I was sitting out there with the cat, then they went into the hotel ... I believe I will take a ghost tour on one of my next visits.
Bisbee has over 33,000 stairs, in over 335 sets - along with a bunch of other skinny little streets and alleys - and all of them lead you on wonderful journeys past amazing houses and gardens, funky street art and historic treasures. I even bought a guidebook about the stairs and picked out a couple really interesting ones to visit this trip, and to plan for future trips.
Highlights included the Pumphouse Stairway - 111 steps up to the old Bisbee reservoir and swimming pool - and the 181 steps that connect Main Street to Maxfield Avenue at the top of Castle Rock.
I also enjoyed the Historical & Mining Museum - especially the upstairs, which is a Smithsonian affiliate - and the Bisbee Library. Bisbee has both Arizona's oldest library and it's oldest saloon (St. Elmo's),which is awesome. The library has been in operation since 1882 - the current building was the third one, and was built in 1907. It is three stories tall, with wraparound balconies on the 2nd and 3rd floor - and it is glorious!
Of course Bisbee also offers amazing restaurants and cool shops, along with just great people-watching and super cool locals. Next trip, I'm staying in a casita belonging to a local so that I can be in a neighborhood and get to know some people ... the casita also happens to be at the top of one of Bisbee's longest and most interesting stairways - it's 164 steps and it changes direction six times on the way up. Happily, there is also car access ... many of the homes in Bisbee have no car access - imagine having to climb up and down 100 steps every time you come and go - and carrying your groceries and everything else up those steps!
On my way out of town this last time, I also drove up Juniper Flats to check out the free camping areas up there - which are fantastic! Yeah, there is some trash and broken glass at some of them, but most are clean and have easy access and gorgeous views.
I might be visiting Bisbee every two or three weeks for the foreseeable future, so more triplogs coming! :)

After three days in the Chiricahuas, I headed south on an unplanned jaunt to take in the beautiful weirdness of Bisbee. Arrived only to learn that I was a week late for the party (the annual stair climb event is the third weekend of October). I climbed them anyway. Much less crowded, I'm sure. This is a great way to explore the less-visited parts of town. It's really quite surprising just how many homes there are in that hollow. On the way back to my camper, I went "off trail" and grabbed another 35 steps up to the visitor's center at the mine. As I was packing it up, I learned I would be missing another big blast; the annual Halloween Dance. Guess I'm just happy here out-of-the-know.

A fun and interesting community. Not your typical tourist town. Enjoyed the trail while interacting with many locals.
