Belated post

Last day in Vegas. I was on a time schedule so I had to chose a shorter trail. Since this trail was in HAZ and seemed minimal I opted for Ice Box Canyon. This hike was done without a Garmin so times and distances are an approximation. Got to the Red Rock Canyon Conversation around 6am. This allowed me to avoid the restrictions and the crowds. :) Once again I used my American the Beautiful pass to get into the park for free. The TH for this hike is quite a way into the park along the one way road. However, the TH is well signed and can’t be missed. Parking for this trail is very limited (8-10vehicles). There are bathrooms at the TH, but no water.

The trail is fairly easy to follow and takes off in a SW direction. About .3 miles in, after crossing a good sized wash the trail intersects with the Dale trail (which heads south) and the SMYC trail (that heads north). The Ice Box trail continues heading in a westward direction. The rises gradually as it continues but ever so slightly that you hardly notice it. The trail is very rocky and frequently you can step from stone to stone without touching soil. I’m guessing I was more than .5 miles in before I felt the canyon encompassing me, and even then, it was an open feeling. The wash that I had crossed earlier, shadowed the trail on the south side and there was a couple of times where the trail got close enough to the edge where I could look down in to the wash. The trail crossed a minor wash once and then shortly thereafter seemed to end in the main wash that it had been “shadowing.” I’m guessing that this was 1.2 miles. There was a beautiful ironwood tree in bloom at this point. From here I hiked up the dry wash, staying mainly in the wash, but every so often catching a user trail to the left of the wash. There was some sized boulders that needed to be negotiated. Would have loved to continue further, but time was against me. Reached a point where it looked like the canyon was splitting, but there was a challenging rock obstacle that would have had to been tackled :( That was my turn around point. Sadly, I’m not sure how close I came to the “box.” Returned the way I came….kind of. I thought I would recognize the blooming ironwood on my return (an the official trail entry/exit from the wash). Not the case. Ended missing where the trail entered the wash and ended up scrambling up the bank further up the wash and then weaving through some light brush to rejoin the trail. Made good time. Kept the hike to under an hour which was the goal. No wildlife :( No hikers, had the trails to myself. :)

Quick hike up Ice Box Canyon - my hiking companion's choice as he had never been there. Ice Box was its usual charming self, with hordes of noisy teens in inappropriate footwear, graffiti to spare, and drifts of all sorts of trash. I wonder what it would be like to be alone here - doubt I will ever know the answer.

After a quick snack break accompanied by watching people try to injure themselves, we headed back toward the parking, turning south on Dale's Trail before the trailhead. Dale's Trail is often overlooked because it "simply" connects Ice Box Canyon Trail to Pine Creek Trail. But, it was a pleasant change from the crowded Ice Box Canyon, with only one other hiker until we reached Pine Creek. A little overgrown in places, but not too difficult to follow, Dale's Trail winds up and down lightly along the base of the Red Rock Escarpment.

Sick of crowds after Ice Box, we turned around at Pine Creek and enjoyed our hike back along Dale's.

Mammillaria and hedgehog cacti are in the beginning stages of flowering here, adding nice pops of color. Also redbuds, penstemon, straggling Mariposa lily, yerba santa, even a few blackbrush. A few annuals still going - woolly daisy, phacelia, and gilias. Good color variety.

No flow over waterfall. A few stagnant puddles in deep shade.
