Went out to see my son in Hawaii before he heads out to Japan for his first ship assignment as a Naval Officer next month. His favorite activity for the 18 months he's been stationed at Pearl Harbor has been hiking and was excited to show off this local gem. Interesting trailhead which he claims is typical for Hawaii is that you simply park in front of someone's house, walk to the end of the block and you'll find a trailhead which goes into a valley or up along a ridgeline to the top of a peak.

This is sort of like doing a longer version of Piestewa, tons of switchbacks but with the added fun of stairs to climb on the steep sections. Luckily the trail was dry, some months of the year it's mud bog with sticky mud that you'll never get off your shoes. Spent most of the hike in a forest, then at the top it opens up and you can see both the east shore and the west shore of the island. Plus you get to look down on Diamond Head Peak, the iconic mountain you see in every picture from Waikiki Beach.

Guess the time has finally come to pass the mantle. I'm normally a fairly strong uphill hiker and my son made sure to put the hurt on me for the last stretch and he beat me to the top by 30 seconds or so.

Fantastic hike! I was blown away by how pretty it was right from the beginning (read: I stole Jared's phone and was taking pictures the entire time).
The trail started out with a bunch of switchbacks as we ascended through your typical Hawaii greenery. About a mile in, the jungle abruptly ended and was replaced by sparser needled trees. It was very peaceful, with our footsteps completely muffled by the needles covering the ground. Eventually these trees gave way to a forest of Cook Pines as the elevation gain picked up a fair bit. We reached a covered picnic bench at about 1.7 miles, and the trail became less defined here. We continued upwards along the ridge, where we were eventually provided with a series of false summits and stairs, which led us up into the cloud that would completely obscure our views from the summit. =]
It was a nice change to find such a well-maintained ridge trail! There were lots of mud and tree roots, but that's par for the course here. Didn't stop us from jogging most of the way back down. =) I can't believe I hadn't ever heard of this one until last week! One of my favorites here.
