FR 300 is now paved west to MP 31. Work still in progress.

I started hiking from the dam at 9:30 a.m. There’s a few minor cement structures at the bottom, but nothing really interesting. One structure had the only graffiti on it I recall seeing on the Rim.

The first ⅓ mile below the dam, the canyon was tangled, the vegetation wet with dew and night rain. My feet got soaked and stayed that way the remainder of the day. The humidity — which was murder — did not help. The creek, which had had pooled water, subsequently disappeared underground for a little over a mile.

I managed to follow a game trail part of the way. Where there was no trail, I took the path of least resistance: Sometimes that was up the main channel, other times a side channel, the “island” between the two, or the usually shady shelf to either side.

The canyon’s channels never got too rocky. There were no serious ankle breakers, nor boulders to scamble over. Other than easily avoided spots of further brushiness, there were no obstacles at all: No pours to downclimb, nor deadfall to low crawl. A couple of times, crossing a fern-covered shelf, I had to lift my leg a little higher over deadfall. Does that count as an obstacle?

At the canyon’s 1¾ mile mark, there is non-strenuous bail west to FR 9745A. Just past that, the creek reappeared as a 200 yd. long pool that was up to 18″ deep. At the 2¾ mile mark is a neat little cliff. You could easily bail east, via the side of the cliff, to FR 115M (though that would be a long walk back).

I reached the end of the canyon at the 3-mile mark. I heard ATVs above. The climb out started mellow, then got steeper, but not as bad as other Rim canyons. No obstacles either. And I picked up FR 295 right at the top. No sign of the ATVs.

The first mile on FR 295 was SUV-able; I would avoid it in a car. At the 4⅓ mile mark, to avoid traffic and maximize peace & quiet, I turned right onto decommissioned FR 9715N. FR 295 is the same length, but FR 9715N seemed to have better shade. I took a lunch break at the 5-mile mark. Reconnecting to FR 295 at the 6-mile mark, I soon turned east down FR 295E, back to the lake.

At first, it looked like there was a trail out of the boat ramp trailhead, past the pit toilet. But the trail seemed to come & go, and in any case is not numbered like Bear Canyon Lake Trail #112. It was obvious the lake was well down, exposing 50 horizontal feet of large, uneven, rocks. I tried side-sloping inside the tree line. Though not as rocky, it was steep, and I was not hiking as fast as I wanted.

Also slowing me down were frequent stops to photograph flowers.

Knoll Lake’s water ran out ¾ mile south of the boat ramp. I aimed up East Leonard Canyon. Normally, I canyon crawl down canyon, climb out, then take forest roads back to my trailhead. Today’s hike showed why.

Though there were sections of animal trail or bracken fern, or even a 200 yd. long meadow, there were several obstacles, and plenty of wait-a-minute vines. The canyon was slow going. It took me 1h 50m — including photos and puzzle solving — to cover 1¾ miles. With the high pre-storm humidity, I was soaked in sweat. 😅

There were also two major obstacles, near the beginning of East Leonard Canyon: The first, a tangle brush and deadfall that stretched across the narrow canyon bottom. It was steep, so I didn’t relish climbing up and side-sloping. After a few minutes of puzzling out routes, I managed to work my way between the brush pile and the right hand wall.

Not 100 yds. past that was the second obstacle, a tall pour flanked by steep walls. (Brush-choked and nearly vertical on the left.) In front, was a several feet deep pool, and the rocks were slick with moss & moisture. I might have tried it dry, but ended up going right, slipping multiple times on the muddy slope.

I figured East Leonard Canyon would start to flatten out, and be less brush-choked, but after 2⅔ total miles, I decided to bail up to FR 9715Q. It was still steep, but using roots and solid looking rocks for steps / foot brakes helped.

A ⅓ mile later, I turned left onto General Crook Trail, which is marked by reflective white chevrons nailed 8-10 ft. up trees, and spaced every 100 yds. or so. Usually, the next chevron is visible from the one you are standing next to. General Crook Trail looks like an old, pine needle-covered, decommissioned forest road. The easy travel was a relief.

I was only on General Crook Trail for a little over mile, past dry Lake No. 4, before turning north onto FR 9715J.

I’d been hearing thunder for awhile. While on FR 9715J it began drizzling. No big. After ⅓ mile, I turned right onto an obvious foot trail marked by white blazes shaped like the letter “i”. The blazes marked the unnumbered trail down to, and along, the east branch of Knoll Lake. A little over a mile, the “i” marked trail was the most pleasant part of my day.

I’m not sure what Knoll Lake’s % of fullness is, but it’s low compared to sat view. When I arrived at the southeast finger of the lake, it was crossable dry 200 yds. north of where the satellite shows water 50 ft. wide. When I stopped for a short break, it commenced raining in earnest. ⛈

Where Bear Canyon Lake has an informal trail on its east shore, I had no such luck on Knoll Lake’s east shore. It was slow going, negotiating more rocky slopes, both exposed shoreline, and up in the trees. Moving as fast as my old, fat, rearend could, it took me 50 minutes to hike the remaining 1¼ miles back to the boat ramp trailhead. Then it really started pouring.

On my way out, I stopped 200 yds. east of FR 9715J to search for the G.D. Bantz grave. (I would have hiked to it, but was trying to beat the rain.) Afterwards, returning to my car, it was in a ditch, 50 ft. away from where I left it. In drive. Egads. Thank God I did not have my brain fart on the cliff edge of the Mogollon Rim! 😆

Spreading fleabane, but white and purple. Lupine on dam. Pinewoods spiderwort and Apache lobelia on rocky west shore. Regular sightings of Mexican silene. Nuttall's linanthus, ragleaf bahia, western dayflower (most common of all), Columbia monkshood, yellow coneflower and Richardson's geranium. Fly agaric the only mushroom I could identify, but many more types than two weeks ago around Quaking Aspen Canyon. Species I did not photograph include pygmy bluet, Parish's yampah and, I believe, wandbloom penstemon. (I did not look close.)

Chumley was willing to drop us off at a spot that allowed John and I to drop into West Leonard Canyon. The goal was to hike West Leonard to East Leonard and end at Knoll Lake. Some water in West Leonard canyon and typical rim scenery. Once we got to the west and east Leonard confluence we headed up stream on East Leonard towards the lake. Intermittent water in the creek but very nice and relatively easy canyon hiking. Eventually we made it to the Knoll Lake dam and met up with Chumley and a few others for a lake swim.

I had plans to get into the blue range this month for some solo adventuring. Nope, work killed that idea. So I needed a hike to blow off some steam. This was just ticket, easy walking and a lot of ferns. Left my phone in the car, no pics this trip. I will probably be back for another at the end of next month.

It's been about a month since I've hit the trails, so I headed up to Knoll Lake up on the rim to hike East Leonard Canyon. No actual trail in the canyon, followed a game trail most of the way. Not your typical rim canyon as there are really no rock formations, just tons and tons of ferns! Been dealing with a bit of Metatarsalgia recently and it flared up pretty bad a couple miles in. Cut it shorter then I wanted to, but still got the chance to get out in the pines. Another trip without any wildlife sightings, that's 4 hikes in a row nothing without a sighting of anything, very strange. Also got my look at the damage from the Bush Fire on the way up and man it does not look good at all.

The Beards were entertaining some friends up north this weekend with the primary purpose of gathering wild raspberries for an upcoming beer they are brewing. I decided to go along and put together a few options for a hike in some canyons and draws I hadn't previously visited. With enough miles on the map, I was able to convince 9L, Claire, and Fotg to come along as well.

East Leonard north of Knoll Lake is a well-traveled canyon with use trails that are easy to find and follow. Intermittent water made this a pleasant, scenic little canyon. We encountered some heavy machinery doing some work in the canyon bottom, and I can't find any indication that it was private property, but I'm looking into that some more. Definitely the most unusual sighting of the day.

We jumped east one canyon and headed up the very lush Fairchild Draw. There was virtually no water in this draw, save for a couple of small muddy pots, probably just the result of recent monsoon rains.

Next, with the goal of Double Cabin, we headed one more drainage to the east, checked out this very sturdy cabin ruin that appears to have been made from some huge milled pieces of timber (easily 16" square). It has uniquely different construction from other cabins I've seen up here.

O'Haco Cabins were on the list, but they have always been on private property. Apparently the land owners have re-established residency there from the dilapidated shacks that existed 10 years ago. (*Edit- The property was sold in November 2012, and it seems it is the new owners that have fixed the place up again).

Finally we visited O'Haco Lookout, a very tall tower in a fenced in FS compound with a cabin, basketball court, picnic area and bbq. This tower appears to be out of commission, but offers fantastic views over the rim.

Back at camp we enjoyed a fun evening around the fire before spending Sunday celebrating some dumb anniversary, picking berries and enjoying the pleasant weather at elevation. Not too bad!

What a relief to get out of Phoenix. We bailed as soon as we could on Friday night and drove up to the rim. Chumley located his bearded friends and we set up tents nearby. Later on we joined the large group for beers around the campfire and eventually one by one we found our way back to our tents.

Sleeping until 7 was awesome for a Saturday and we hit the trail ( off trail?) around 8AM. After we left Knoll lake and continued in Leonard Canyon it was so peaceful and we didn't run into anymore people for miles and miles. My dreams of not seeing anyone on the trail were dashed when we came upon a fellow operating some heavy machinery in the bottom of the canyon leveling out some ground. Very interesting. We stayed clear of him, but he still asked us what we were doing and telling us to be careful. Shortly afterwards we left Leonard Canyon. We took our lunch break on a grassy, flowery knoll and decided our path for the rest of the hike. Fairchild draw was lovely despite the enclosure fence that we followed up the draw the whole way. At the very end of the draw we came upon a grazing heard of Elk that Blanco and Cup were sniffing out. We hiked out and followed a road that took us to what is left of Double Cabin. Still really cool to see a bit of history so I'm glad this was included.

We got back to camp around mid afternoon and even though there wasn't significant elevation gain, all the off-trail was a good work out. I was glad to come back to camp and my beer and my bag of Cheetos :D
It was a really beautiful day and we would have had the trail to ourselves if not for the man on the tractor and the two camouflaged Quads that came across us.

We wanted to get out of the heat for the weekend and decided to head up north to the Rim. We drove up on Friday night and camped with a group from AZ Wilderness Brewery. We started our hike on Saturday morning and walked out of camp and made a clockwise loop.

The first part of the hike had us scramble down an off trail slope to Knoll Lake. It was steep and loose but no biggie. From there we followed East Leonard Canyon. The going was very easy as we followed good use trails. After a few miles we connected into Leonard Canyon. The first mile was rocky and required crossing the creek several times. Things mellowed out and we continued to the north end of the loop where we climbed a steep embankment back to a forest road. We followed the road for a mile or two and dropped down to Double Cabin. From there it was easy going back to camp.

This was a nice loop with beautiful scenery. Thanks to Chumley for putting it together. And thanks to FOTG for joining us on this one. Was a lot of fun!
