Went to California for a few days and I arrived early morning just before sun rise, so I had a couple hours to kill. I keep my hiking gear with me so I figured I would try one of the short loop trails along the Ortega Highway (74) in the Cleveland national Park. The San Juan Loop Trail is a short 2.3 mile loop that drops down into the San Juan Creek and follows along the creek and one of it's tributaries before going back up to the trail head. With the good amount of rain they had this year the creek was running pretty good. Later in the year this will be dry. I was always impressed by the size of the oak trees in the Cleveland National forest and this place holds up to the reputation. While here I also checked out the other trails in the area and there are quite a few, so that next time I drive here I can plan maybe some longer hikes. Like a lot of areas in Arizona these coastal ranges dry up in late Spring or early summer, depending on what kind of winter they had. When driving to California I like driving at night to avoid traffic, then hide out in the Cleveland National Forest until the Morning rush traffic along I-5 clears a bit. This is a great time to put in a few hours hiking. So if you are on your'e way to Cali, drive at night and unwind with a hike.

This hike occurred the day after the Agua Tibia Loop, so I wasn't looking for much. Got to the trail a little before 7am. I was a little worried in that there was no self pay station at this trailhead like there was at the Dripping Springs TH (Agua Tibia Loop TH). Discovered you need to buy your Adventure Pass in advance or from the Ortega Candy Store when it opens. Since I wasn't going to wait around for that to happen, I decided to take the chance and hike anyway. I didn't read too much on this hike and I'm embarrassed to say that I got (in a manner of speaking) lost. About .2 miles in, I came to a bench and a metal railing overlooking Ortega Falls. Very Nice! Water was still flowing from a rainstorm that had passed through 4 days earlier. There was a split in the trail at this point and I assumed this was the beginning and ending of the loop. So during the initial part of my hike I was expecting the trail to curl around in a NW direction to meet up with this split. At 1.1 miles there was another split in the trail. One direction was labeled Chiquito Trail the other direction was not labeled. I briefly followed the Chiquito Trail since it was going the direction that I anticipated, but quickly realized that it would never get back to the TH in time for a 2.2 mile loop. I encountered another hiker and he told me that the unnamed branch that I had disregarded was the San Juan Loop and that the trail loops with the parking lot, NOT with itself. That side trail that I had seen at.2 miles was exactly that! A side trail down to the falls. So what should have been a "loop in the park", turned out to be a little more vexing. Still good times! And my base (starting point for future hikes) for the Cleveland National Forest has been established. Just saw a couple of hikers on the trails. Once again, no wildlife. Also, got back to the car...no ticket. :)
