ascended via West Molino. Descended to the North, hoping to find the cool North chimney route I did in the past from Hollin basin. Instead I ended up just descending a steep slope to a saddle above Hollin. Took the drainage down to East fork of Molino. fun day

My buddy and I went up Molino Canyon in December with the intent of going up Airman; but we were so captivated by the canyon that we continued up it and bagged Guthrie Peak instead. We returned to check out Airman, Molino Thimble, and West Molino Canyon. The trek up Molino went quickly, with lots of rock hopping amidst a beautiful stream with small waterfalls. Turning West from that the trekking got slower with more snow and flora to navigate. We got to the saddle north of Airmen where it was a "choose your own adventure" to get to the summit. For better or for worse we skirted west of the north ridge.

From there we had eyes on Molino Thimble, a short and straightforward ridge walk away. Gaining the Thimble summit is possible via a deep chimney on its east side. I read two descriptions labeling it as Class 4; but I found it to be 5.easy. Furthermore, the exposure and fall consequence seemed greater than described. Not sure if the landscape of chockstones has changed or if my predecessors were just bolder than me (and I'm often accused of not having an amygdala). Regardless, I eventually made my way up while my partner opted to stay at the base.

From the thimble, we bushwhacked north down to West Molino. This canyon is awesome! Some of the biggest falls I've seen in Southern AZ. More slow going as we navigated Class 3 terrain with very real fall potential. Overall a stunning day in the foothills.

Went with a friend this afternoon to try Airmen. We ended up following the drainage all the way to the ridgeline, which was steep, but not horrible in terms of footing or vegetation, and with good views whenever I remembered to turn around. The summit's very cool: broad and flat, with lots of neat little areas to check out. Unique views from up there of Hollin Basin, the two Guthries, Green Mountain, and the highway as it snakes through Molino Canyon.

On the hike up this route, we walked through the canyon and was unaware that there was an old trail on the left side of the canyon until we found it on the way down. There were some steep areas, especially the last stretch going toward the "thimble" and around to the saddle. Once at the saddle, we just moved in the direction of the peak, having to weave in and out of some of the rock formations. The bushwhack always seems to add a lot more time than if there was a trail. I find that a lot of these time estimates are too low. Anyway, it was a great hike and it was nice to learn about the history of how it was named and even saw the log entry from the son of the person who named this peak.

Mike and I did a quick scramble up the West Fork of Molino to Airmen Peak. Lots of waterfalls were to be seen! Took the same route up to the peak that I've done before. It's basically a bunch of caving/canyoneering moves up a chimney. Lots of fun. Took the route down described by the Airmen Peak description with a little bit of modification. Fun day!

This peak has been on my radar for almost 3 years now, and it was great to finally experience it. I learned about it a few months after having moved to the Tucson area while hiking with one of the local hiking meetup groups. The peak, [and journey to reach it], were described as a 'beautiful, fun, and not too difficult off-trail trek to a lesser known but still awesome summit.' In just a few words, that pretty much sums it up!
