First hike with much elevation gain in a year and a half. I have been riding my bike more lately, and walking some. It took me a long while to walk up this thing, and my hip hurt a lot coming down, so I had to take Ibuprofen and Tylenol, sit down, and wait for it to kick in.

On the steep part, I walked up the road. There is also a trail, but I'll save that for later, if I am able.

On the fun side, it was a pretty day, I met a lot of nice folks and a few friendly dogs, and I enjoyed the views.

The ocotillos have no leaves, but they are blooming, perhaps in a last-ditch effort to reproduce. There has been no rain in months. I just spent 10 minutes trying to figure out when the last rain was in Yuma, but NWS website always defeats me. Maybe someone else knows how to figure that out. It's looking pretty dead out there.

A lot of elephant trees along the paved road.

Yoomapalooza continued on Sunday as Hilary veered farther left than bernie sanders. It left the Arizona west coast mostly dry for the day, though still cool-ish, mostly cloudy, and plenty breezy.

I decided to take a quick trip up to the towers above Telegraph Pass. Not sure why this "trail" is called Telegraph Pass, as the pass farther south, much lower and has an interstate going through it. As it is, this is a stupidly steep maintenance road for the towers on the crest of the Gila Mountains, with views north to the Kofa, west into Kalifornia, east to the Mohawks and beyond.

The road is one that I'm not sure I'd enjoy driving. It would put a real workout on your gears and brakes for sure. While climbing the road, I noticed a singletrack cut on the south side of the drainage that looked like a nice alternative option for my return.

As it turned out, when I got to the top, I decided to just keep going, following the ridge north, then turning west before returning down to the starting point. There's a faint use trail and some occasional cairns along the way, but no real obstacles, and probably some nice views on a clear day. The last mile gets more use, apparently from folks hiking up from the bottom to some of the lower peaks along the ridge.

Dark grey clouds loomed all day, but rain never threatened. The humidity was thick, but a steady breeze in the 30s helped keep things in check. The wind picked up significantly as the day progressed, and several times challenged my ability to remain vertical. I did a fair bit of low turtle crawling to keep my center of gravity lower. I pulled up the readings from the Yuma airport, which was clocking gusts in the low 60s. Not sure if the topography I was on was enhancing that, but it wouldn't have surprised me.

Temps popped up into the 80s, and when the sun peeked through the clouds near the end I was convinced my death was imminent. Fortunately, I managed to overcome the short-lived August heat and get back to the truck where I promptly dunked my head in the icy cooler water.

That was it for my weekend. I hopped on the 8 and made a positively miserable attempt at driving home. Despite perfect alignment, I held the wheel in a 1 o'clock angle to offset the crosswinds. Probably great on tire wear! No typical two finger driving, but two hands gripping ten n two like the book says! A couple stretches of zero visibility dust and I was just hoping for dear life that nobody in front of me was going slower than 40 or there probably would be no way I wouldn't slam into them. Not an enjoyable drive at all. Nobody has ever been happier to see Gila Bend! Trip fuel economy was reduced by 4mpg from normal!!

Hilary weekend totals-
New hikes to me: 3
Waterfalls: 0
Wind: yes
Visibility: no

Walked the road outbound to just past power pole 74 where I turned left to reach the official trailhead. Road walk was intermittently steep and always rocky. This appears to be the preferred route out. From the gate at the trailhead the road is concrete all the way to the last of the towers at the top. Winds were fierce, causing another hiker to scream in fright at the top. The return trip from the trailhead was on an actual trail to the right of the road. After about half a mile of ridge walk I dropped down a purple dot-marked trail into a wash where I followed purple and orange dots back to the parking area. Didn’t see a soul on the return trip! Definitely a steep and serious workout trail, but worth the time to take in the views.

Between camping and hiking, and then after lunch, with the high winds and dust, I found it enjoyable to drive some of the farmland and see the color green. Like John Lithgow's character in 2010: The Year We Make Contact, I miss green. I'll take dams, lakes, and artificial made land over the canyons flooded by these projects, any day. The last 12 months have had so little rain the desert is the driest I have ever seen it, even in normally wet Tucson the desert is barren.

Not out here! The life giving Colorado sends it's little water and creates a spectacular oasis of exotic plants. Yes, a salt crust surrounds most fields, and who knows how long it will last, but for now, this is an paradise of life.

After a very hot hike on Klothos the day before, I was sore and tired. Think less than 2 weeks ago Matt and I did Kimball in shorts with a high in the desert in the low 60s. No wonder I drank 2 liters for that entire hike. I could have used 3 for Klothos, and this!

Telegraph is interesting if nearby. Very popular, even mid-day. I found the trail going up from the gate, but most people choose the road. I took the road down. Lots of Elephant Trees here, which I like. Too bad it was dry this winter. It was near 100 and dry again, so they are turning yellow.

Nice views. Hot, but very solid.

Awfully crowded trail for a weekday, but a botanical treasure trove of Bursera and unusual cacti and Agaves. Well worn trail gives way to a steep Thompson Peak-like paved service road. If you're a desert plant geek, this hike is a must!

This hike is in the Boots and Burgers book. There are spur trails and such. I followed the HAZ Track. The first mile or so is across the desert and some rolling hills. Not a lot of vegetation. Ocotillo looked healthy. After that you come to a gate, 2 Port-a-johns, and a trash can. You go around the gate and start climbing the cemented road to the towers. I talked to a local and he told me there was a register and 2 benches right before the top. The register is in an old phone box. He also said don't stop there as the views are better by the towers. I agree. I talked to another local on the way down and he hiked with me for 10 minutes or so. Some good conversing with a couple locals :) . That was half of the hikers I encountered :o . Slow day I guess but it was windy. This does look like the local exercise hike. It really does seem like a mini Thompson Peak in Phoenix/Fountain Hills.

The book suggest Lute's Casino for a burger. It's not a casino. It's a big ol restaurant in downtown Yuma. There is wall to wall Memorabilia in the place. They seem to do a good business. Their special was a burger/hot dog. Not real big, but tasty :D . :y:

To start with, I used HAZ Tracks to track my hike and it calculated the 4.8 miles round-trip and 1329 AEG (which were different from the "default" figures for this triplog). Just sayin...

Anyway, wow this is a cool hike! I had started it yesterday, then realized it was longer than I had thought and wouldn't make it to the top before sunset. I was guessing this was all about the views to the east, particularly the mountain ranges lit in the late afternoon sun, so I didn't see the point in finishing yesterday. I came back today a bit earlier.

The first 1.25 miles are pretty easy. I took the trail from the north end of the parking area that you access off of the dirt road, near the utility poles. It goes through a nice mini canyon, then climbs out on to a bench from which you have really nice views to the mountains on the south side of I-8 and the rest of the trail ahead of you. After you hit the concrete access road for the cell towers, WOW! That's some steep climbing! I swear there were quite a few sections at 45 degrees, no exaggeration. I have hiked the steep ones in Phoenix many times...Piestewa, Camelback, Siphon Draw...but they get into steps/stairways and climbing. This is just a really even, steep path and that's difficult. I reckon this was good training for McDowell Peak in Scottsdale, because I haven't done that and those descriptions all talk about how steep the road is there. Anyway, I digress.

The views WERE stunning from the utility towers! No one was up there so I just wandered a bit. One other hiker showed up and showed me the trail log, suggesting I sign in since it was my first time. I did, and added ""HikeArizona.COM"" after my signature :)

Then came the hike down. A hiking pole would have been nice...I think. I think my knees will be sore, it's really difficult to maintain that steep of a downhill for a full mile.

Regardless...it was worth it and a great hike. See my pics!

PS Joe B...I tried to type H A Z dot com above, because that's what I signed in the trail register, but you did something whereby that automatically changes to "HikeArizona.COM" when it saves a triplog here. I didn't write the full words in the trail register.

Great Hike! My wife, two daughters and I girls made it to the top about 50 mins before sunset. My youngest daughter (6 y/o) did the whole trip unassisted (minus the stop for bandaging up a skinned knee).

Stopped in Yuma today to see a friend. She suggested this hike. I hadn't done it for about 3 years, so was glad to agree. We did not hike up the road all the way, but took the "goat trail." We hiked back down the road, however.

This hike is much more popular now than it was 5 or more years ago, the first time I did it. There were a lot of hikers out. And a very nice, warm day!

This hike felt much better. I was still a little sore from last week's climb, but for the most part I just took my time and kept moving. I made it to the top by taking one step for every 2 deep breaths. I'm still wearing a Heart Rate Monitor that beeps warnings at me all the way up, but I am determined to beat it and make it to the top without a stop...or a rest step. ;)

Today was my first time up Telegraph pass- it was definitely challenging. I can feel the soreness kicking in. My daughter (12 yrs old) and 2 of my friends climbed with me. It was really beautiful weather making for a nice hike.
