#2 for the day. A little slower, but not much. The hike up in the dark always seems longer because you can’t see your progress. This trailhead requires high clearance 4 wheel drive as well. Middle section is through Boulder field. Coming down trail is easy to follow. I did not follow a trail or followed multiple trails on way up. I liked this one best for day maybe because it was too dark to see anything in Huron.

Road walk from Winfield in beautiful forest up into a magnificent basin, then a steep scree slog up to a plateau and then up never-ending talus slopes to the summit. Above 13,000' trend towards the left to stay on the easiest path up the talus.

Our plan to do the standard route from the north, off Rt. 82 near Independence Pass was thwarted by a construction closure. The southern TH is reached by turning at the Clear Creek Reservior and going in over 14 miles past Winfield. The road in is rough and long, and unless you have 4WD & high clearance vehicle, you won't be able to drive all the way to the TH. Our hike was 3 miles longer than the 7.3 miles for the actual hike to the peak.

Beautiful hike, but very steep and lots of boulder crossings. Slippery gravel makes for poor footing on some portions. Several false summits. All this makes for a welcome respite from the hoards of hikers on other 14ners in central CO. Only saw a handful of people all day. Outstanding views from the ridge on. The middle boggy area is for real. Have to tiptoe around considerable mud. Almost lost my boot at one point. If you're surefooted, you can stay feet dry the whole way.

This triplog is nearly identical to the one posted for La Plata Northwest Ridge way back in July 2014. I'm just getting around to writing the description. How's that for procrastination?
